It's…read moreactually quite the nice church from the aesthetics perspective: you've got the front area perfectly set up to put in a Nativity scene or a tree, the Stations of the Cross are set up around the Church, and there's the balcony where the choir can go to sing from. (Funny side story: I used to think that the choir balcony was Heaven, and that when I died, I would end up singing in the choir up there for all eternity... probably explains why I've lapsed... I'm not much of a singer, so that wouldn't be much of a fun eternity.) Also, the priests here were cool. Most notable would be the late Msgr. Devine, who was a really nice guy. He'd come by the CVS where I worked, and he knew who I was, so that was cool. There was also that one priest they had for awhile who sang a lot and looked like Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation. He was cool too. I'm not a big fan of much of what the church teaches, but for the most part, St. Mary's did have a small part in forming the me I am today (about 90% of the credit goes to my parents, 5% to PBS, and the rest to the Church, among others.). Do I follow everything? No. I'm pro-choice and I think gays should be able to marry. But on the whole "help others" thing (you know, the part that involved that guy who wandered around and gave people food and raised them from the dead and all that), they did a good job. Also, as an architectural thing, it's a cool place as well.
