My wife and I had the chef surprise 4 course menu with wine pairing, and what a treat it was. From a very simple cheese and salad amuse bouche, smoked sea bass and mixed fish starter, an incredible house smoked duck breast (with home made fig and nut chutney) and a very interesting rabbit ragu and finally a desert collection; everything was perfect! Wine pairings were also very interesting, all obscure European sourced wines that matched the food perfectly. Including, something I had never heard of before, a pinot grigio from Luxembourg. If you like good, French style, food I strongly suggest you try De Eetkamer. Heck, the next time you are in the Netherlands and you like good food, this place is worth a visit. You may have noticed all my reviews to date on Yelp have been 5 star, this is deliberate. Life is too short to focus on that which does not make us happy. This is why I restrict my reviews to those things/places that make me happy and appreciate life. Sure, I have been to some really dreadful hotels and restaurants, but, like I said, life is too short to spend time thinking and writing about them.

The service was extremely attentive and each course a burst of flavor. I coupled the meal with their suggested wine tastings and loved every glass. Even the tea I ordered at the end came with a tasty biscuit and a side shooter of whip cream and butter scotch.

I am not joking when I say that I want to fly back to the Netherlands purely to eat here again someday. We were looking for a place to eat that was within walking distance of The Hague Marriott. When another restaurant on the same street was all booked up for the evening, we found The Old Jazz. It was still before 1900 and not crowded. (However, every table was filled by the time we departed.) I am so thankful that the other restaurant was full, as this was a meal I will remember for years to come. I started with the salmon and tuna sashimi and my friend chose a crispy pita with bell pepper aioli. The fish was so fresh that I felt like I was back in Hawai'i enjoying a freshly-caught meal on the water's edge. My friend--notorious for being a very picky eater and never eating sushi--even tried the sashimi and ate a whole piece of tuna. The dish also featured wakame, a homemade kimchi-like veggie blend, sprouts, rice puffs, ginger, and wasabi (and not the packaged kind). My friend was thrilled with the pita. We also enjoyed some cocktails as starters. I really liked my elderflower spritzer to begin the meal. Although everything sounded delicious as a main course, I opted for the truffle rigatoni with the lobster. You know those dishes where you involuntarily close your eyes with every bite because it's so good that it almost overwhelms your senses? The balance of the dish was perfect: salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and umami were all represented in harmony. If it wouldn't have been poor form, I likely would have licked the dish clean to savor every last note of flavor. Our waiter had also suggested a lovely glass of wine to go with the dish, and the recommendation was perfect. We absolutely had to order dessert to end the meal, opting for the moelleux au chocolate with a white chocolate crumble, vanilla mousse, and what was described as a "pure chocolate" ice cream. Again, this final dish was heavenly, and I wanted to pack the chef in my suitcase so I could enjoy this incredible experience again. Throughout the meal, the service was sublime. Every recommendation from our waiter was perfect, from the wine pairings to dishes that might interest us. I am immensely grateful that we stumbled upon The Old Jazz. Someday, I will find a way to return to The Hague, perhaps just so I can dine here again!
