Leaving the politics of this place (Which are AWESOME.) aside, I would just like to look at the food. As it was my first visit I wanted a wide sampling, so I took everything to go and grazed over the next day. Apple Pie - The basic measure of any pie place, right? Surprisingly blah. I think my apple pie might be better than this! Needed vinegar and/or lemon. Something to brighten the flavor. Mint Chocolate Chip - Pretty good, though the bottom was goopy and the crust had morphed to the point where the end of the chocolate creme and the beginning of the crust was not remotely clear. Not too sweet and the darker chocolate in the mint creme was a nice touch. Savory Hand Pies - Let's be blunt, they have obviously changed their prices because they WERE NOT $2. They were bland, the crust was too thick in ratio to the thin layer of filling. A small amount of filling can be forgiven if it is punchy in the flavor department. It was not. These were my biggest disappointment. Also, they had ZERO items made with alternatives to sugar, including the touted lemonades, which is a no-brainer for substituting sweeteners. I expect all bakeries of quality to be working with agave and stevia in at least one item at this point. They also only had ONE non-pie gluten-free item. Gluten free is also a given in a modern bakery in a big city. Pretty disappointing. I found everything to be prices $.25-$.50 too high. Sampling 4 items got expensive pretty fast and the portions are small, particularly with the hand pies. Concept and community activism - FIVE STARS, no question! This is a little late, but my wife went into the cafe the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, crossing her fingers that there would still be a few pies to choose from, and to her pleasant surprise, all three of our top choices were still available! At around 4 p.m. on the Wednesday before the biggest pie holiday of the year, First Slice came through for us, and we were able to bring the red wine poached pear and the sweet potato praline pies to my in-laws. I have been on quite the chai trip lately, and not just for any chai, home brewed to be specific. So I guess you can call me a chai snob... but I was excited to discover that they do brew their chai in shop! It was delicious, the workers were so sweet, and the pie was supreme! We loved the food! we went there both Sat AND Sun this past weekend. pie, curry chicken salad, baked goods and coffee were great. But, why were the 2 different cashiers on both days so grumpy/gloomy? They just were not happy being there, which is sad since it's such a cheerful place, or at least trying to be. Both cashiers acted as if we were wasting their time. This review is for our wedding pie 6/28/14. Best experience was taste testing 10+ pies. We went with 8 different pies for our wedding and everyone had a different favorite. Aside from delicious pies and a super easy process - it felt really good working with First Slice. Absolutely the best pecan pie I ever had. Tons of pecans, not too sweet, just perfect. I have had pecan pie down south in plantation style restaurants in Louisiana and this beats the pies down south. And the people that work there are very nice too! read more

Terrific key lime pie - and I'm not even a fan of key lime pie. Cherry pie just okay; had better from Mariano's. Portions are small, but that's probably better for the waistline. Completely outstanding! Most of the staff is super friendly and the place is super cute and has a homey small town atmosphere. The gift shop in the back is nice and filled with great gift options. Be careful when buying a cookie even the regular priced ones might be a few days old and dried out. The sample of peanut butter was good yet the one I purchased which was chocolate potato chip was too dried out and I threw it away after just a couple of bites. Come here for pie! Super yum! Coffee toffee was super good and super rich. The best pecan pie I ever had in my life is here. My goodness! Wow! I thought I had an amazing Chicago pie place to enjoy. This one is even better and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Less that $4 for a slice of super deliciousness! My boyfriend and I enjoyed a rainy Tuesday afternoon at this cozy cafe. Great pie and slice selections. I had a slice of Peanut Butter Chocolate: chocolate cookie crumb pie crust, rich, creamy peanut-buttery filling topped with dark-chocolate ganache frosting, then sprinkled with crushed, powdery peanuts on top. They had blueberry cheesecake, chocolate mint pie, Apple, strawberry rhubarb, OCCUPY (get it) that was a pecan pie, I believe. Key lime Pie was my guys favorite and strawberry rhubarb. He is a pie snob and immensely enjoyed both. The strawberry rhubabrb had substance-lots of fruit, a little less jelly. He had the duck confit sandwich , which was excellent. And I had chicken cucumber salad with what tasted like house-made crustinis that came with it-warm and toasted. The salad had a tangy vinegarette toss with julienne carrots and the like; almost thought it was from Whole Foods deli; it was really tasty and light (had to save room for my pie). All was served in Santa Fe-colored clayware. It just gave it that much of a nicer touch. Enjoy good coffee, pie, or lunch at this altruistic joint. read more

After one visit, I absolutely adore this place. First, the ambiance/decor. It reminded me of a place you'd see in a college town: small and laid-back hip, but not "hipster" like comparable places elsewhere in the city might be. The workers are very friendly and helpful. The place is open late, making it perfect for an after-dinner stop on a weekend night. Perhaps best of all (besides the awesome pies themselves) is the fact that they are a not-for-profit place benefiting the homeless and GBLQT community. What's not to love about this place? My wife dragged me here the first time against my will-I'm not a big fan of pie so I was thinking why would I eat dinner here? I have now eaten here for dinner twice and both times I am astounded by how good the sandwiches I ordered were. I literally got up and thanked the cook and told the cashier guy how incredible the food was on both occasions. And even the pie which my wife made me try was very good. read more

I really like this little off-the-beaten-path cafe. I love pie, so maybe I'm biased, but everything that I've had there has been pretty tasty. The small cherry hand pies are my favorite and the savory pies that I've tried for breakfast are good also. The wait staff is attentive and polite, which is always a plus, and the space still has a lot of the charm of the old storefront space in which it is housed. Great coffee, pie and sandwiches! Alterra coffee is a Milwaukee roast that could give Intelligentsia and Metropolis a run for their money. Finally if you eat here, in addition to it being delicious, you can feel good about the caiques behind it. The cafe and subscription meal program run by Mary Ellen, are used towards a larger program to feed Chicago's homeless! So eat here! read more

I'm typically a fan of First Slice. Which is why I stopped by promptly at 10am when they opened the day before Thanksgiving to pick up a pie. Six pies left. Seriously. The day before thanksgiving they have no basic pies in stock? Isn't pie what they sell? Visited First Slice for the first time last week as part of the Andersonville Dinner Crawl, and was immediately impressed with the friendly helpful staff who had spent time preparing for a constant stream of "Crawlers" coming in to sample their goods. This is my new go to place for dessert! So many great pie options: apple, key lime, french silk, pumpkin, sour cherry. Everything I have tried has been delicious (the sour cherry is my personal favorite). The prices are reasonable and the outdoor seating is a nice option for the summertime. I've been anxiously awaiting the opening of this place and finally stopped in today with my two young boys. Lovely place! My older son had the grilled cheese sandwich with chips and fruit. When it was brought out to us, it was actually TWO beautiful sandwiches on lovely panini bread, a generous portion of chips and freshly cut apple. For $5!!!! I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap and would have loved it even more if it hadn't been as spicy as it was. But it came served with a lovely and generously sized side salad! It was plenty of food for $7. We also decided on some of their candies instead of pie. We got the Mint Cookie Malt Balls and OH MY! Melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness!! My husband wanted key lime pie for his birthday and there were very few places where I can preorder one in the middle of November. I searched yelp and decided on First Slice. Ordering and paying over the phone was easy enough; I was told I had to pay for it over the phone in order to reserve it. I came in the next day to pick up and that's where it all fell apart. There were 2 customers in front of me, so it felt easy enough just to get behind them. Wrong! The two customers in front of me took a long time deciding on what to order and soon there was a steady stream of customers behind me. But when it was my turn next in line, the girl behind the counter instead decided to skip right over me and served the next two customers that came in after me. She skipped right over the pregnant lady in there with her two kids! You would think I'd be hard to miss, but I guess not if the intent is to just ignore me. The guy behind me apologized, though really it wasn't his fault. It's not like he cut in line. I just wanted to get the pie I already paid for and leave. At this point I'm fuming. I informed the girl behind the counter that I ordered/paid for a pie yesterday and was there to pick it up. I gave her the name the pie was ordered under. She brought the pie.... and had the nerve to try charge me for the pie. Again. If the policy is to pay before you can reserve a pie, there is no reason why she should even have tried to charge me for it. I told my husband about he crappy experience I had trying to get him his birthday pie. And we both agreed this better be some amazing pie to justify the whole debacle. It wasn't. The pie itself was average. Actually, it tasted like the Edward's brand frozen key lime pie you'd find in the freezer aisle. Though the crust on the Edward's brand version is better. read more
