Extremely disappointed with the service at this location. I came in specifically for the lunch special (2 slices and a drink) and requested sausage. The chef flatly refused to make a sausage pizza for the special, telling me I could only choose between pepperoni or Meat Lovers. To make matters worse, choosing the Meat Lovers meant paying an extra $2.00. This kind of inflexibility is a dealbreaker for me. I will not be returning. read more

I've ate here a few times the pizza is good but the last couple times I've ordered the pizza it had barley and sauce almost burnt or maybe the pizza was just old idk but it was nasty and I threw it out disappointed because I've put a lot of people on to this spot and it's not living up to the hype read more

I popped in for lunch and had the chicken shawarma salad. The portion was huge and it was delicious! I'd ask to omit the pickles in the future, but everything else was fantastic! There are tables, but it's a very casual restaurant, so I think it is better for takeout than staying to eat. read more

Cool spot! I always wants to try the location in Portsmouth, but I never did even though I live in Portsmouth. I will now go in there when I'm craving this food. I'm also eager to try their pizza! Best choice! Just here for a few days and found Five Boroughs. Thank you for your kindness in greeting me when I came to pick up my order and gifting me a bottle of water while I waited. This gave me a chance to watch the two chefs. One making delicious looking pies and the other working on wraps and pitas. My Falafel Combo was so amazing! Been reading the reviews and wanting to try them for years and we finally ordered here. Since everything is halal, we ordered the pepperoni pizza, lamb shawarma plate and baklava. I like the crust and the sauce on the pizza. Wish there's more pepperoni on it since it's rather on the 'thin' side but the 'large' pizza was really large and enough for at least 4 adults. The lamb shawarma was good although I thought they forgot the pita bread so I finished off the rice and lamb and only found the pita in the bag with the cutlery. The baklava for me was the best. Maybe I was bias because I've been craving for baklava since Ramadan or maybe they were they good. On the higher end since it cost $6 for 3 small pieces. read more

Very very surprised that we enjoyed our food so much! This place is a definite hole in the wall that deserves more attention than it gets, and the reviews reflect how good the food is here. Got the chicken sandwich lunch combo for only $10, and I wasn't expecting to completely devour it like I did. The crispy fries were also super good! I rate it 8/10, I did ask for no condiments and my sandwich came out with both ketchup and mayo which is why I took off one star. My bf got the chicken gyro combo for $10 and he didn't say a word because he was busy chowing down. I tried a bite and next time I'm back I'll get that! 9/10 The dining room was very clean but boring, it can use some decorum and welcoming vibes! Ordered this for takeout and it was bad bad bad. The chicken kebab was super over cooked and some of the pieces were like trying to gnaw through wood. The hummus was very salty and the olive oil drizzle was super bitter. Barely choked down 1 bite of it. The pizza reminded me of what the school cafeteria served on Fridays - stale cracker crust, sugary tomato sauce, rubbery bland cheese. As an Egyptian-American who grew up in NYC, this cusine is my comfort food. Five boroughs has the best falafel in town, probably the best I've had since my mom's. This little restaurant is located in Ghent right off of Colley and I finally gave it a try the other day. I was really craving some shawarma and knew this place had good reviews so decided to try out a spicy lamb shawarma wrap. I didn't know that spicy was an option when I looked at the menu but the owner asked me if I wanted it spicy and I said sure! Not only was the wrap great but it was so well priced for its size! The lamb was also tender which I appreciated because I've been to several places where it's overdone/dry. The wrap had some sort of spicy sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles (first time having that in shawarma but it was a great add on) in it. I'm so glad I found a good shawarma place near by because I haven't seen many in Ghent. I wish I had tried this place sooner since it's so close to me and look forward to going back! read more

I really liked this place. I enjoyed their sharma , loved their calzone and pizza . Stopped by today to grab another calzone. I don't know if it's just a thing nowadays or if I'm a nut , but if your cleaning and wearing the gloves you prep food with either wash your hands or change your gloves. Standing there watching for A sec I didn't want to say anything I just left. , if that's how they do things and that's normal for folks then know they have good food. We've ran, walked and driven by this place for 2 years now and finally ordered using Uber eats. My only disappointment is in how long it took us to finally try it out. Legit NY style pizza! Just enough sauce, thin crust with just enough crunch to be excellent! Lots of cheese and good amount of toppings. Fold the huge slices in half and it's like you just bought some in NY City! We got a half pepperoni/ half cheese and a veggie pizza. Also got the wings. I mean I really enjoyed them for the wings they were...from a NY style PIZZA and shawarma joint. I thought they were great! If I was looking for the best wings in town Id go to a wing joint. But next time I want wings when I order pizza I'd certainly get these again. Going to have to try the Mediterranean food sometime soon! Oh last note we got the two specialty pizzas, wings, garlic knots (missing from order but Uber took care of it) and 2l soda. UPDATE (3/19/19): Ali B (owner) messaged me in response to my initial review; he asked me to return for a dine-in lunch where he "guaranteed my time and experience will be much better than last time." So, I went back today with a friend; I paid for his chicken pita combo since Ali insisted that my repeat meal (chicken shawarma, falafel and drink) was complimentary! Thanks man. Female cashier was friendly and helped my coworker decide. Food was prepared accurately, fresh and in 5 minutes. The chicken pita ($9) was mammoth and tasted good; fries were cooked to the perfect golden brown texture. Since I'm not a hummus fanatic (like my wife and youngest daughter), I should have requested it be put in a container and not directly under the entire bed of lettuce. Still, I enjoyed the hefty portion. Falafel plating presented nicely, served heat hot and tasted pretty good; we both liked the flavorful red sauce served with it that packed a nice kick of heat! That said, we both agreed Mr Shawarma still holds bragging rights for falafel, sauce variety/innovation, and the novelty of selecting your preferred amount of choice toppings while seeing the meal take shape in front of you. Still, I think 5Bs may have the slight edge in price, rounding out the visit at a solid 4/5, easily bumped from a 3.75/5 because of the reassurance provided by the owner's message and follow-up gesture; it shows he cares about his customers and their experiences which only means this place will likely continue to improve! FIRST VISIT (3/4/19): Mediterranean fast food spot, next to Verizon store on Colley and 21st St, with subtle New York City touches and Halal food practices ("permissible" by Islamic law, no pork). There's a small, shared lot outside and 2 distinct indoor spaces: dining room and order counter/kitchen. A bit odd but bright and clean with simple contemporary decor: light gray walls, dark gray vinyl/leather seats, and NYC art (glass wall etchings, clock and canvas prints all depicting city staples - maps, scapes, landmarks). Seating exists at 6 four-top tables (paper towels on each) and a few high chairs floating around, too. On order approach, I personally enjoyed the spinning Shawarma wheel (of fortune) in plain sight (a la NYC). Employee greeted me and offered some suggestions. As a Mr Shawarma faithful, I told him it was my first visit and that he had a tall task of converting me, especially since Avi (Mr. S) makes the best falafel around. He didn't budge when I hinted at a FREElafel sample, so I bought a chicken shawarma salad and small falafel side (4 pc) for $16.70 - high price point for typical drunk undergraduate street food, which can also be said for a recent price increase at Mr Sharma's but I like supporting community minded business owners! Wall menu salad price was $8.95 but rang up for $9.95, as on the print menu. Also, when asked by the cashier and chef 1, I requested spicy sauce on the side. At prep, Chef 2 asked me if I wanted spicy sauce. Neither are deal breakers, just indicative of 2 process kinks that could improve. Ultimately waited 10 minutes from payment to food delivery in an otherwise empty restaurant. Salad looked and smelled good but amounted to a 3.5/5. A healthy amount of chicken (yay) with cilantro BUT unwelcome heaping hummus hills hu (better word play attempt is there somewhere) beneath iceberg lettuce, a quartered unripe tomato slice, and 3 pickle slices. It presented NOTHING like the example pic on the menu (blanched baby kale, red cabbage, cucumbers, etc). Falafel? It was OVER...priced and cooked. Not terrible but NO threat to Mr Shawarma's, IMHO. read more

I'm avidly making my way through my 757 restaurant bucket list, and starting in the neighborhood with Norfolk. I've driven past 5 Boroughs countless times - it's unassuming exterior is deceiving, as it delivers one-of-a-kind Middle Eastern and Halal cuisine which is hard to come by in this area. Got the Chicken Shawarma platter to-go and a few takeaways: -Pita was dry, plain, a bit stale - but, nothing a little hummus couldn't fix -Hummus was good, hints of lemon -Rice was fluffy and buttery -Chicken Shawarma stole the show. I would've loved the tahini drizzle except it was thick and congealed (I blame the takeout on this one) but reminiscent of eating peanut butter on my chicken. Would get it on the side, next time. Of course my fiancé had to throw in a side of fries, which I didn't even bother snapping a picture of. They were evidently frozen beforehand and tasted like bowling alley fries (not complaining, though ) Would I go again? Super clean, super quick, super good place to stop on a Friday night for dinner. We are in the error of social distancing so the line was short and everyone kept their space clear. Three to go orders...one Philly cheese steak, one lamb shawarma wrap and me a shawarma platter. The lamb perfectly seasoned. The chicken cheesesteak is worth trying once but I personally wouldn't have it again. The cheesesteaks were good but not great. They just weren't quite how a cheesesteak should be. You know, thin slices of chicken saute'ed with peppers, onions, and mushroom and LOADED with provolone on a hoagie roll.
