So why did they name it Five Guys? Supposedly because it had a nice ring to it. But the real reason? So that college coeds, like the giggly ones in front of me, could joke and say, 'I've never had five guys before, have you?" The other girl says, "Yes, I do Five Guys every week or so, he he.." Fortunately, the line went by fast. I went on a Wednesday at 11:45. The place suddenly got crowded at noon. Uncomfortable if you order and there is no place to sit. There was some loud rock n roll music playing that 40 year olds will recognize, but their kids might not. If you like free peanuts, have it it while you wait but don't go to the patio with them. Because Zagat claims this is the best burger chain, and Consumer Reports claims In N Out is the best, the comparisons between the two are inevitable. But they're different in style, size and price, and Five Guys has more variety. For me, I like In N Out better...just my opinion. What Five Guys outdoes over In N Out is options. You can have different types of sandwiches, fries, and you can build your own burger - including some gourmet items like mushrooms. It was cool they list the calorie counts on the burgers...the regular size had 700 calories. But the calorie count on the small burger was a few hundred calories less. And I wasn't that hungry so I got the small, and really, it was enough for me. The bubbly female cashier explained, "what toppings do you want?...They're free. Feeling overwhelmed as a newbie here, I said, "Everything". With a small fries and coke, the order came out to about $9.50. Kind of pricey, but there's a lot of burger and fries. They called my number 10 minutes later that my food was ready. The small fries in a cup spilled all over the greasy bag. They were an awesome golden brown color. It tasted like they were frozen potatoes - In N Out uses fresh but they're not as crispy as these. While crispy outside and soft inside, it was grainy...obviously russet potatoes. The burger was juicy and good. I loved the grilled onions and mushrooms. The lettuce, pickles, unripe winter tomatoes were okay, The meat was good, the best part of the burger. Fatty, juicy, seared, and overall good. The bun was big and soft, and could've been better if they were toasted. I just happen to prefer toasted buns. There was mayo, though I would've preferred a thousand island type sauce option. Overall, the burger was 3.5 stars. This is kind of a downscale location but improving. The buildings in this shopping center are old but recently repainted. The tenants nearby are 99 cents only, Goodwill, and Big Lots. They struggle with keeping the tables clean at lunch, but this building is very crowded as I leave. There is a one banger bathroom, but it was clean. The online ordering function was beyond STELLAR (seriously, why don't more places implement such an efficient web / mobile function?!); unfortunately, the food paled in comparison. I ordered my burger lettuce-wrapped, and they forgot to add grilled onions and mushrooms. TWO THUMBS WAY DOWN. You don't get between this girl and her grilled veggies unless you have a death wish! The patty itself also seemed to lack flavor, so I doused that sucker in condiments. What really disappointed me, though, were the cajun fries. I have never had saltier spuds in my life. They aren't shy of grease. The staff was great, the cook in the back greeted me as I walked in. I ordered a double cheeseburger which came out to $8.31, which is a bit pricey for a burger without fries or a drink (I wasn't impressed with the fries last time I was here). I enjoyed the free peanuts as I waited for my order, and took notice of how clean the restaurant was, which is impressive when you're giving peanuts out to everyone. My burger arrived wrapped in aluminum foil, keeping the burger nice and warm. The ingredients tasted fresh, especially the meat and bun. My biggest issue were the pockets of grease. I would take bites and one of the main flavors i tasted was grease. It was overpowering to say the least. Make sure you grab plenty of napkins. This review is mostly about the amazing staff. Tonight we went for dinner, and the place was packed- no surprise. We ordered and got the last indoor table. We were chilling, grubbing on those awesome free peanuts. I expected a long wait, but within just a few minutes our order was up. I was looking forward to my usual: Cheeseburger w/ mayo, grilled mushrooms, and bbq sauce (I keep it simple). However, when I opened up my burger, it was not my order- it had pickles, tomato, ketchup, mustard, and bbq sauce. Disappointed, I began to describe the burger to my wife. I was just debating whether to take it to the counter or not, when an employee who overheard my dilemma, came straight to the table and offered assistance and apologies. Dominic was incredible. He wanted to do whatever he could to make it right. He immediately went to the counter and got me mayo and grilled mushrooms. He offered to give us fresh fries, we turned it down- we already had a ton left to eat. He offered to refill our drinks for us, but we were all good there. I really didn't feel my minor issue deserved such effort, but that made me appreciate it all the more. We were taken care of and very happy, but Dominic didn't stop there. He said, "Your next burger is on me." I smiled and thanked him, not taking it too seriously. It was a nice gesture. But then he reaffirmed: "No really. The next time you come in, look for me and your burger will be my treat." He asked me for my name and we shook on it. I am so impressed with Dominic's level of service. He truly went above and beyond... especially since my problem was so minor and irrelevant. What I love about the staff at most of the Five Guys locations is their organic, easy way of delivering great service. They are friendly and professional without seeming fake at all. Five Guys was so eagerly anticipated by me and those I know, in part because they are somewhat legendary (think In-n-Out to out of state ppl) and also because they were opening one, seemingly yards from where I live! So we went. We ate. We conquered. Ok, not really conquered, but it sounded fun! Burgers, dogs, sammiches. All catered to your particular desire. Ingredients coming out of your ... ears. Add as many as you want, they'll be happy to accommodate you. Fountain drinks, check. Gargantuan orders of fries (yep, even the small is huge) check. Free roasted peanuts whilst you wait, check. I was very happy to note that they make a veggie sammich, since I'm transitioning to Happy VegHead. But for the carnivores, eat up! Pretty friendly service too, not as harried as other places. All in all, good place to eat on the fly, like In-N-Out, but don't compare the two, they're two separate products, both cool in their own right. read more

The cashier needs to enjoy his extracurricular activities on his own time. My first and only visit here started off awkwardly. The cashier was just staring at us while I looked over the menu and when I was ready and walked up to the counter he was still staring at me. Even after me saying "Hi, how are you doing..." he continued his vow of silence, and I continued to feel uncomfortable as gave him my order. Only when he told me how much I owed him ($9?!) did he finally speak. This being one of the weirdest experiences I've had putting in a order at any establishment is an understatement. My only rational is the dude is high as ****. I ordered the little bacon cheeseburger with lettuce as I wasn't sure what to add as a topping on my first visit. First mistake was ordering it "little" and second was not adding any type of condiment. I was told by my GF that the "little" burger was normal size and should be enough for me. Unfortunately our appetite differs and I'll need opt for the normal size next time. With only lettuce, cheese, and bacon to accompany my burger I had a hard time pondering what sauce to put in my burger. Mayo? Ketchup? BBQ? No Thousand Island?! Maybe it's just me but cheeseburgers usually come with thousand island or special sauce. I'm all for customization and letting the customer pick what they want but give a base for your burger to work off of. It was definitely too dry to eat without any condiments. I ended up getting the ketchup and BBQ on the side and dipped the burger when needed. You can taste the freshness of the burger and it was actually pretty good in its own way compared to In n Out of The Habit. I also got my burger with a side of small fries, which to my amazement, wasn't overly greasy like some pictures I have seen. My main issue with Five Guys is the ridiculous price. I ended up paying over 9 dollars for a bacon cheese burger and small fries. And this is for the "little" bacon cheese burger. To think I can go down the street to either In and Out and pay a lot less or go to the Habit and get a lot more. Yes, Five Guys has landed in North Orange County on the corner of Chapman Ave and State College. Yes, there are free peanuts. Their burgers are larger than In-N-Out's. Like In-N-Out, there is no Chicken or Fish burgers. Just Beef hamburgers, although they do have a Bacon Cheeseburger. Overall, the size of burger is larger than an In-N-OUT burger. Single patty burger is in the $4+ range, while double patty is in the $5+ range. So the price point is a bit higher than In-N-Out. When you order, there isn't a "to-go" or Dine-IN option, all orders are To-go style in a paper bag. Nonetheless, this as well as no drive-thru speeds up their service times, as they are much faster than In-N-Out. Their French Fries utilize Idaho potatoes and have skin on the fries. The Fry itself is a thicker fry than In-N-OUT. I ordered the Cajun fries, which means spicier seasonings on the Fries. They use Heinz Ketchup. This location has outdoor seating as well as some covered outdoor seating as well. Indoors as well as covered outdoor seating is accompanied by loud rock music. Covered outdoor seating is good for large groups. Five Guys is a good change-of-pace from In-N-Out for slightly higher prices. read more

Eh... it's just a good burger. Nothing special. Definitely better than fast food but not as good as other burger places. Fries are good, but not the best either. It's one of those places where if I'm in the area then SURE I'll stop and have a good cheeseburger, but it's not a place where I'd make the drive because I'm craving one. Being a So. Cal. native, I was disappointed that there wasn't a Thousand Island type of dressing to put on the burger, but it still was good with mustard and pickles, etc. I did enjoy it though... trust me, nothing was left in my little foil wrapper. Tried it for the first time and the burger was really good. It tastes nothing like In N' Out, so why does everyone compare them? The burgers taste fresh and less processed than other places. I prefer Habit's fries best. Great service and one of those soda machines where you get a thousand choices of soda flavor! Came here after being frustrated with Sonic and the poor guys just had someone come in steal their tip jar and then the cash registers went off line. They guys were super nice, asked if we could order off of their app but started our hamburger patties cooking so we didn't have to wait. Great food! Just.... a bit messy. But the mess is sort of the style they are going for...... but do you really need the place looking like a food fight just ended? I can understand the peanut shells on the ground but the really dirty tables, yes, and chairs is kind of silly. Please clean more often. As far as the food goes, great. Came here the other day for the first time with my nephew. He's been here a lot and wanted to go so I figured why not. Have been wanting to try this place anyways. So I ended up ordering the bacon burger with everything on it, a mini burger with everything on it, medium fries and a drink. After ordering, I did notice they did have self serve peanuts. I love peanuts. So before my food even came out, I started going to town on the peanuts. What a great way to start a meal. When my food came out, I took the first bite out of my bacon burger and dayum was it good. The meat was super juicy to the point where it wanted to fall apart, the bread was super soft, but more importantly, the bacon was super crispy. I hate it when you get a bacon burger, comes out and the bacon is soft and soggy. That was not the case here. The bacon was legit. With every bite, I had a super crunch to it from the bacon. This was an excellent burger. I would definitely come back and order this again. The mini hamburger was very good as well but I really didn't think much of it as it seemed like any other burger to me. At the same time, remember I just ate a large bacon burger right before I ate this so that might explain things a little. Either way, like the bacon burger, the meat was super juicy. The fries, well, they're fries. They're not super crunchy like some other place we all know and weren't soft like others. Overall a decent fry. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who likes a solid burger. For the price, it's hard to beat. The quality and flavor is definitely there regardless of the price. My husband was itching to come here because it looked good on yelp and at first I wasn't so sure but I said "What the heck? Why not?" We had never been here before it was our first time so we decided to try it. Yeah everything looked pretty nice when we walked in and then "BOOM" their prices for a burger meal just kind of slap you in the face! My husband still ordered but I was about to run next door to yoshinoya till he ordered for me too! He ordered the cheeseburger with everything on it and got me the hamburger. First time Only reason they got a 3 instead of a 1 is because of the very tasty burger they have. Like I said this was the first time I ever had it and must say I was highly impressed. I really like the fact that you can order any size burger you want and the fact you can also put any topping you want and there is NO LIMIT! The place also offer free peanuts...all you have to do is scoop and serve yourself. Now the reason they got their low score: 1) Their FRIES....was the nastiest I had....it was limp, soggy and actually tasted burnt. I just decided to eat it as-it and not call to complain because I understand mistakes happen. I decided to go back tonight for dinner and I ordered my little bacon cheeseburger. I brought the food home and began to eat when I realized there was no bacon. I called Five Guys to tell them what happened but they said they could only help me if I drove back with my receipt which I wasn't inclined to do because it was inconvenient and I just wanted to stay with my family and eat dinner. I'm disappointed with this location and its inability to get my order right. Their fries are definitely in my top 3, so good. Service is always spot on and they always make my order correctly. You can't really go wrong with a burger, or hot dog, you can fully customize. If you have a small appetite, you can always order a "little" burger. Even though they're considered small, they're still very filling. Weirdly enough I'm not a "burger person", but their burgers are delicious. Very moist and well done. The ingredients they use seem really fresh as well. The times I've ordered jalapenos or green peppers, they look and tasted very fresh. As far as their fries go, they're amazing!!
