I've fished with many a guide service and know a good one when I find it. 5 Star Charters is up there with the best! I fished the ocean in the AM for ling cod, rock fish and crab; and the bay/river in the afternoon for salmon. The boats are spotless and kept in tip top shape. The gear sits at the ready and Mark (AM) and his son Jeff (PM) are johnny on the spot with fresh bait, tackle and assisting with catches and snags. They know what comes in the boat without a second glance and share their knowledge with anybody who wants to know. Fishing is in their blood! Mark know where the fish are and he put us right on them. After filling our ling quotas, we switched gear to light weight tackle and rods/reels to add to the rock fishing excitement! Back at the dock, the fish are cleaned, bagged and put on ice while the crab is cooked and cleaned. Top shelf service and they love what they are doing! I measure the success of a day on the water with smiles per mile and I went home beaming from ear to ear! And a cooler of fish adds to the enjoyment. I will definitely be back to this beautiful, sleepy section of the Southern Oregon coast and I know what I'll be doing when I am there!! Jeff Lottis was our guide and there truly is none better! It was just my husband and me on board and we caught silvers all day. Two good sized ones were hatchery. No one was catching as many as we were and no one was catching chinook. That is - until Jeff put us in front of one that hit and peeled line like a Marlin. Of course it headed for a boat up along side the north jetty and found it's way under it. Jeff maneuvered our boat in every direction and every speed the fish went (which was everywhere, and always at warp speed). When it was finally close to the boat for netting, a seal came after it. Jeff beat it off with the net and netted my 27 pounder! The fish was so tired from all of his desperate runs that it didn't move at all when it was released on the deck. Jeff was so amazing - doing everything he had to do to make sure that big fella got into the boat. I wish there had been a video! I know most guides are good - but this guide is a rock star! this is my third trip with five stars charter and jeff (the best guide ever). They have some of the latest equipment to find and land those magnificent salmon. I fished the river with another guide from a different charter service and all he did was yell at me. Five Star Charter has its own fish cleaning station, so you don't have to wait in line to have your fish cleaned and filet and cut anyway you want it (service is their thing). I wish I could show a photo but I don't know how to do it so my son and daughter and I caught a 28#,26#,24#,18#,17#,14# all beautiful fish. Went out on a bottom fishing trip with Mark. We have done this trip several times now and always a great time. Five Star Charters' boats are well maintained and clean. The fishing gear is always top notch. They always throw out crab pots to be shared by all the customers at the end of the trip. Great day of fishing on the ocean, everyone caught fish and we even had some crab to share with the boat. Returned to the dock and in no time our fish were filleted and bagged according to species and the crab was cooked, cleaned and bagged ready for us to take home. This is the fourth or fifth year we have enjoyed the expert guide service of Five Star Charters.... We ALWAYS limit on the ocean (incredibly enjoyable and reasonably priced) and the River trolling for Kings is very relaxing even when the fish are not in... Last three trips my teams have all caught kings and Jeff at Five Star was phenomenal and worked diligently to put us where the fish ARE! I can't say enough good about these folks.... They have become our West Coast Family in Gold Beach! (BTW they also guide for goose hunting and that is A+ as well!) I cannot say enough about how pleased we were with our charter boat bottom fishing trip with Five Star Charters. Captain Jeff was pleasant, professional, knowledgeable, patient, attentive, and hard-working. The fishing was "off the hook": Captain Jeff knew exactly where to go, conditions were perfect, and the only things slowing us down were exhaustion from pulling in so many fish and the legal limits which everyone on the boat hit. We even shared some Dungeness crab from the boat's crab pots, which was prepared to perfection by the on-shore family crew. We had a great trip. My wife and I went out July 12th. Limited on very large ling's and rockfish. I have been on several bottom fishing charters and this was by far the best trip I have been on. Jeff was our captain and he is extremely knowledgeable and worked hard to get everyone on fish. This trip is also great due to not having to share an overcrowded boat. Unlike some of the larger over crowded boats up North their was plenty of room to fish, makes the trip more enjoyable. Even cleaned our catch at end and we went next door to vacuum pack them. I had guests coming to Gold Beach who wanted to fish for salmon. I scheduled a day trolling the bay with 5 Star Charters. It was my first time fishing with their outfit, although I have know them for years. We had Jeff Lottis as our guide and had a blast. Sure, we caught fish, but the way Jeff handled himself is what impressed me the most. Jeff is cool, collected, and a consumate professional. I live here, and I've used lots of guides before, so I know the differences. Some of the guides I would not use again even at gunpoint. I don't usually write reviews however feel 5 star charters went above and beyond for us. my wife and I had scheduled a fishing trip however due to bad weather, the trip was cancelled. Mark called ahead to notify us however we we're already in route to the location. Mark was able to reschedule us on the next day with another guide (not even with his company) to make sure we could still go fishing. Sure glad we didn't go out on the bad weather day, was glad to be inside as was ugly. the next day was great weather, the guide was outstanding and we caught fish! My wife Roberta went out with Jeff on the 9th of October. We had a lot of fish on that day But my favorite story of the day is when Roberta hooked up with a 25+ lb salmon. Roberta was fighting it All around the boat, Jeff was running the boat this way and that way trying to help her land this monster. After close to 14 minutes a seal came and grabbed ahold of it never to let go of it. It was heartbreaking to loose it but this is by far the best Big One got away story I've ever been part of. This was our 4th trip with these guys and we weren't disappointed. They had us limited out and back at the dock before 10 AM. This was my nephew and his son's first trip out and they had a blast. Been on these trips all over the states. My expectations were extremely low. Haven't had the best experience on a lot of my trips. My wife talked me into going and had a great.
