Something has changed with this place... My last review was written when I was living in PA yet (about 3 years ago), and this place was excellent. However, I recently came back home to visit family, and had to stop in at my favorite Chinese place. But things were just off... The service and atmosphere was good as always, and the prices hadn't changed amazingly, but the food was just lacking the freshness and flavor it used to have. We went on two separate occasions too, and both times the food seemed "different". It wasn't terrible, just not as delicious as it used to be. It was now just average Chinese food. They also added new Thai menu options to their dishes, and let me just give a fair warning, that they are dreadfully awful. I got the pad thai, and it reminded me of hashbrowns swimming in oil and ketchup. I am not kidding folks. It was disgusting. I sent a request to Yelp to change the address. It's near the Laurel Mall. The original location had me walking down some odd ass street in downtown Hazleton. Not a good idea. The guy behind the counter was friendly and cool. We got the General Tsos. I also got sesame noodles which are a favorite of mine, though the sauce was a little thick but quite tasty. To prove how tasty, in the last few hours I have googled "How long can sesame noodles be unrefrigerated." The food was quite good, which I think translates into amazing for Hazleton. You really need to stop by this place for lunch or dinner if you like Chinese. I wish I had this place near my house in DC. They have good sushi also. read more

Lived here the last 10 years, never came here because it was part of a strip mall next to Aldi's and McDonalds. My mistake. An eclectic place, everyone that works there is full of energy and passion. The food was well prepared, and met my wife's discriminating and somewhat snobbish Thai food preferences. Can we stop insinuating that if something is in Hazleton we should lower our expectations or apologize? Although I don't live in the town, I frequent it and appreciate the hard working and tough people. The town struggles to recover from the use it and leave it approach of the people who got rich from coal and then left with their spoiled children and bloated material lives. But they also left a town with some very beautiful architecture and vistas, if you can just get past the grime and disrepair. I only hope that this cycle of use it and then turn your back on it doesn't repeat itself with the fracking industry, who have brought their heavy equipment and rude and crude workers from Oklahoma and elsewhere to get natural gas piped throughout the country while I am forced to pay for propane deliveries at the price per gallon exceeding diesel fuel, and the area struggles with some of the highest unemployment rates in the country. The food here is always great, and the servers are courteous and reliable. My husband and I eat here probably at least once a week for a quick, working lunch, and are never disappointed. We've also eaten dinner here with a group; the entrees are excellent, and they were easily able to accommodate us (about 10-12 people) in the dining room without a wait. This is one of the few sit down Chinese restaurants in the area that isn't a buffet or takeout only. A few years ago the food was really incredible and this was a must go to place, it's been a while since I have been here and in that time the quality of the food has downgraded a bit. I got the General Tso's Chicken and while it was full of flavor and sauce, It was also a bit hard on the outside. It wasn't completely bad. My friend had lo mein and that wasn't too bad. The egg roll was huge but I am not a fan of egg rolls so I gave it to my friend. They still give you those corn chip like things that I have no idea what they are called before the meal. The service was still very incredible. They are very quick to refill your water when you run low, and they also have incredible tea. I think I drank and entire pot of tea myself. The soup also wasn't too bad although the broth had no flavor Just overall the food doesn't match up with the rest of the atmosphere and service. Came in had a great experience. Mike, made beautiful sushi right in front of me I paired it with a great martini. Peaceful environment. Sat at the sushi bar no commotion and peace to enjoy your food in a nice setting with some peace and serenity playing in the background. I will come back. Based on most of my experiences, Five Star Chinese Restaurant lives up to its name. They do Chinese, Thai, and Japanese equally well. So many great options. The sesame chicken actually tastes gourmet, and the wonton soup is way better than average. They excel at seafood, raw or cooked, especially scallops. The miso soup is excellent, and the ginger dressing on the simple green salad is rave worthy. The atmosphere is stylish, spacious and comfortable. The prices are very reasonable. The hot tea is exceptional, but they also have soft drinks and a full bar. Hazleton is lucky to have 5 Star! read more

Ordered delivery, after an hour and 45 minutes of waiting for food I called the restaurant to be told they were on their way. Another half hour goes by and still no food. Extremely poor service. The only solution was they would give me 15% off my order. I explain I did not want to discount on the food that I had ordered and paid for it on my credit card. Finally went after living here for almost a year. Fabulous. I'm very picky about my restaurants. I would have given it five stars but hey do not offer brown rice (this limits my menu options). Another work related delivered lunch. I guess many would give it higher marks, but I cannot. The food arrived on time, one star, it was hot where it needed to be hot and cold where it needed to be cold - another star and it was certainly within our company guidelines. However, I really wasn't impressed with the actual food - the flavor felt off to me - not bad - just not what I was expecting for good Chinese! This 3 star by no means is it a bad place and I would certainly give it another try - there stars means it's A OK! So please don't go because I didn't give it 4 or 5 stars! It has been a few years since I ate here. I won't be back. With the service and food I will not be back. First my wife didn't have a napkin at the table setting, then the waiter only bought 2 menus for the 3 of us. He never bought a third menu or any napkins. The chips were super greasy. I mean SUPER GREASY! We ordered, and it took 45 minutes to get our food. The place wasn't crowded and our food was COLD . It was apparently sitting in back for awhile. Extremely rude, unprofessional people behind counter. They used to be super nice now they are very not nice. One gentleman had all sorts of earings in his face and long hair. Before reading this please take note this review is based on the fact this food was delivered. Couple things to factor into a delivery review 1 was it on time? A five star delivery in my eyes is 30 min or less. This delivery took 32 min. Close enough for me! Also a factor in delivery is condition of food. They got a 4.5 here because food spilled inside. Now on to food. Chinese donuts- Mmmm good General tso shrimp- white rice was perfect. The shrimp was delicious. However the broccoli was very bad. Seemed unfresh and rubbery. Egg rolls - surprisingly terrible! Way way over fried! Barely eatable This review was an unfortunate surprise compared to my meals here before I started yelping. A pleasant dining room. We waited 10 to 12 minutes for the server to ask us for our drink order. Others servers were in motion, but avoided us. Clearly, she was new as a waitress. Her English was okay, but her accent was thick and hard to understand. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, we proceeded to order. She was helpful guiding me through the menu. She presented our food in a timely manner, but didn't bring me what I ordered. It was disappointing, & I won't return there. Really great Chinese and Thai for the area. Thai spring rolls are fried, not fresh rolls, but still really good. Asked for massaman curry with a little spice and it was perfect. White meat chicken was tender and the veggies were fresh. Honey walnut shrimp is very good, and the shrimp are huge. Always excellent service. read more

Years ago this was one of the best Chinese restaurants around. I'm really disappointed in the quality of the food lately. It's extremely greasy. The dry noodles are constantly stale which were always delicious in the past. The fried rice is so greasy it's not edible. Every time I order sushi it has a rotten taste. The avocado and fish usually have a brown tint. It also feels dirty in the restaurant. Like it needs to be aired out and thoroughly clean. Please get new cooks! read more

If you're looking for a traditional, sit-down-and-be-served Chinese dinner, this is the only place in Hazleton worth considering! (For Buffet-style, go with Yong Hao.) EVERYTHING is delicious. They've recently added a new sushi bar, which is spectacular. I'd always been afraid to give sushi a shot, but our regular waiter talked me into it one day, and boy am I glad! Delicious! And super fresh! Even if you're not a fan of sushi, the display case is beautiful and you can watch other people's orders being assembled. The lunch prices can't be beat. Two people can get out for under $12 including a pot of hot tea, and still have enough left over that a doggie bag is required. They make one of the best General Tso's I've tried, and the "Sweet and Pungent Chicken" (I love they they don't call it sweet & sour) is one of the best as well. And the sub gum Bird's Nest... yum!
