So this happened about 4 years ago but I still cannot believe that it did, and I still think about it every so often. So I figured I'd let everyone know about it. Me and my family were dedicated diners at this establishment. We lived very close in a nearby neighborhood and always ate here, even before the major renovations they made. It was a cozy quiet place, food was really good, they'd play relaxing Jazz music and service was usually very nice. One night me and my mom decided to stop in and have dinner by ourselves.

We ordered some pot stickers, soup, and 3 dinners I believe because we were going to kind of share and take the rest home. First, the waitress, a small young blonde woman was remarkably upset that we had ordered so much food. Are you...

sure you can eat all of this? She asked rudely. I told her we were going to probably end up taking a lot of it home and eating it for lunch the next day, so no big deal. She goes in the back and me and my mom look at each other like what was that about? Maybe it was the fact that me and my mom are not on the bigger side and she thought we didn't know how to order or something so we let it slide. The chef himself comes out, ( I think he's the main chef/owner, the guy with really big arms, or at least, he had them then), with our food and goes, do you guys realize how much you ordered? Jeez that's a lot of food!! Me and my mom looked at each other confused as the entire place was empty. I looked around the restaurant to kind of prove a point and then back at him who still had his gaze on me unbroken and I said yeah, so what? Well it's just a lot of food he said once more, I don't think I've ever seen anyone order so much, right? He says to the waitress. Then the waitress comes back over and starts laughing with him saying the same and agreeing. Mind you this restaurant is small so you could literally hear a pin drop from the kitchen. I told them both thanks for the concern but we're good. He walked away laughing shaking his head with her doing the same. I have no idea why they both shamed us like that, at that time business didn't look too good for them (this was right after covid), you'd think they'd be happy someone was buying anything from them. Other than that, the fact that we were regular customers for years and would usually bring the entire family for dinner and tip very well should've been grounds for excellent service without that kind of bullying. This experience really really upset us, because afterwards we've never been back for fear of getting shamed again. Hopefully things have changed there because that whole experience was just beyond RUDE. If someone apologizes for this rudeness that transpired, I might think of readjusting my review and coming back once more.

Pineapple Fried Rice and Massaman Curry.

The food was so good. It was everything we were hoping for when we decided to come here today. This review has a vegan bent. Most of their entrees can be adapted to being vegan, besides some of the salads, per our server, who I suspect is an owner...? And this is something we really appreciate. A lot of things are labeled vegan on the menu but you can assume this applies to most items, "just let us know." Further, everyone seemed happy. The employees were all friendly. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. This restaurant also appears to be welcoming to families. It was just me and my girlfriend, but two other tables had small children. Relatedly, they have a small store that has candy and such. This is going to sound weird but it's true. The water was so cold and refreshing. Beyond the water, the food was served quickly following our orders, less than 10 minutes for sure. Also, everything tasted like it was literally just taken off of a stove. We bought the Pineapple Cashew Fried Rice with fried tofu, the Massamon Curry with fried tofu, and the Guay Chai. We love fried tofu and being able to add that to both main dishes was like xmas. The Guay Chai seemed fresh, hot and soft, and the dipping sauce (not sure what it was) was sweet and had a thick consistency. The portions were substantial, the pricing was more than reasonable, and the food was amazing. We brought home enough food for dinner tonight, we went early evening, and maybe breakfast tomorrow? Note: The picture was taken after we had eaten for a bit and does not include the additional rice or the Guay Chai.

Ordering the food over the phone wasn't terrible...but I wish the quality and taste of the food were better. I had a taste for Thai food - specifically pad Thai which is one of my favorite dishes. I ordered that along with the Thai basil fried rice (was to be a bit spicy) and was severely disappointed. Both dishes tasted similar. If I was blindfolded I probably wouldn't be able to pick which was which. I didn't dine in - this was carry-out. The restaurant itself looks small.

Sometimes it can be a big ask for restaurants to live up to their names, but Five Star Thai has no issue with that. Whenever I come to visit my parents, we like to order from here to go, but recently I finally had the privilege to dine in. I'm a sucker for a good Panang curry, and here is no different. You get plenty of food and can usually make two meals out of it. Overall, the food is fantastic and the service is great as well. To be honest, this is probably the best Thai place in all of The Region.

So... this place has done some updating. Food and service was kind of amazing. So much better than when I had written my first review. Ordered the spring rolls and the beef noodle soup and both were cooked perfectly and super yummy. The soup is a HUGE portion. And yum. I'm really glad I went back. Of course, it always helps when you're with great company. :)

This is a small place hidden from US 30. I walked in on a Monday around 7:30 and had a hearty conversation with the owner. I asked for yellow curry chicken, but he said yellow is not typically eaten in Thailand; the red is more common and has better flavor. He recommended I try any of the red curry dishes. I ended up ordering Bankok chicken, with peanuts, baby corn, water crests, bamboo and it was quite tasty. I got two filling meals out if it Dining area is open again, but I took my food to go since I'm currently traveling with two dogs service was fast and friendly.

We are from out of town and found this hidden gem. If you love Thai food do not sleep on this place!!! My husband had the drunken noodles with beef and I had the pad Thai with chicken ... both amazing!!! There were many other things I would have liked to try. As a side note; very clean establishment with very friendly staff!!! read more

I can't believe such an awesome place exists in Northwest Indiana! I loved the food I got here. It was rich, authentic and the service was friendly. I had green curry with shrimp ( fresh nicely sized shrimp, delicious crunchy veggies, fresh basil and creamy savory curry), drunken noodles ( great flavor, lots of veggies, would have liked to have more noodles), and Tom ka soup ( not my favorite, but not bad, just a bit more of a sweet/ sour flavor). tasty bubble tea. Great curry is hard to find in Indiana- this is a new favorite for me!! read more

Great food and great service. Can't say enough good things about all the food we (me, husband & niece) had. We don't live in the same state as this restaurant but will be passing through several times in the next few months and will DEFINITELY be eating here again SEVERAL times. I am always up for trying something new. We were in the mood tonight for Vegetables. Whipped out the trusty Yelp app and on the hunt we went. This place popped up and the reviews made it seem like this was dinner. Only being 3.5 miles from the house, it was rather convenient also. We headed out in search of the location. If you aren't careful, you will miss this hidden Gem. It is located in a strip mall that isn't visible from Route 30. Walking in the specials are presented on a easel. Normally 5 Star Thai would receive 4 star hut Friday I ordered wings and stir-fry shrimp. The wings were old and were tough from being fried repeatedly. There were 4 shrimp in the stir-fry. Won't be stopping here for awhile. read more

First time here for lunch. Interior was simple, not much for ambiance if dining in. It seemed pretty clean, although we didn't see the bathrooms. I had a stir fry dish that had good flavor, although the amount of beef was pretty small (reason for one less star). I liked the variety of the menu and pricing was ok. Service was good, waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. We will come back to this place. read more

One word, unforgettable. The service was amazing, The owner was nice. Thai tea and green tea were good. A little heads up to anyone sensitive to spice, if theirs a little chili spice next to an item it is AS spicy as it says it is. That's not a bad thing, the time yum soul was spicy but tasted so good. I've been coming here since I was 12 and I'm 25 now. They are always my favorite and affordable ! Way better than asparagus. I always get the pad see ewe with chicken but every plate I've tried has been amazing. The pot stickers and crab Rangoon are always the best and everything is so fresh. And the tai iced tea!!! thi was our first and last time we'll order food from there. We were in high expectations for we enjoyed Thai Food in Illinois a few months ago and so we set our hearts on finding one and did just that. It's in our own back yard. We ordered mixed vegetables and beef and basil beef. it was tasteless and watery... sorry but any positive input would be that hostess was polite and great supply of oriental spices and groceries... read more

Update - during the pandemic I decided to sample as much of the menu as possible via takeout. I've made it about 60% through and nothing has disappointed. Basil noodle is still my favorite. It's perfect on a cold day. Curries are great as is the Pad Ka Pow and Spicy lime dishes. My absolute favorite take out spot for lunch at the office. read more

My favorite Thai restaurant in NW IN. Have been a loyal customer the past 2 years. The food is always amazing, tasty and reasonably priced (for the portions are large and each entree can typically feed 2). The staff (whether takeout or dine in) is extremely friendly and patient. It's crazy that GlutenFree219 started six months ago but we haven't featured our FAVORITE Thai restaurant in Northwest Indiana. Well, sometimes you just take what you have for granted and we are so used to this place being our go-to local place that we failed to give you some detail around why we love it so! Where to begin - let's start with the owner. Tana is the sweetest lady you'll ever meet. She's put up with me and my gluten-free issues for SIXTEEN years! I first walked in with my daughter in one of those infant car seats and I think one of the first solid foods Gina ate were Pad Thai Noodles. My son is 13 and he came up with an interesting theory on why we never order soft drinks at Five Star - the food is so delicious that we don't want to ruin it with some artificially sweetened diet cola. He also made it official tonight - Five Star Thai cuisine is HIS favorite place to eat. Period. This is another place that you would likely not check out unless someone told you it was ok to do so. It's in yet another very ugly run down strip mall with more vacant space than occupied. Thank goodness Five Star Thai is still there and here to stay. Now, the gluten-free options. There are a slew of them. Keep in mind, my daughter Gina is NOT a celiac. She has LIFE THREATENING food allergies to wheat and seafood. She's been gluten-free since we discovered I was poisoning her through my nursing efforts in 1997. With that said, Gina has eaten this Pad Thai Chicken since then and NEVER once had an issue with this dish here at Five Star. I am the explorer of the family and I've tried about everything on the menu. Most everything they have is rice based and they make everything from scratch so just let them know what you are allergic to and you will find them to be accommodating with every visit. I have to credit my Headline to a delicious ice cream shop called Azucar (means Sugar) I visited in Little Havana last month. They made the most delicious and unique combinations of ice cream. One of the most complex flavors had the name "THAI ME UP". The ingredients? Peanut Butter, Sirachi and Coconut. It was like an explosion of sweet, icy and spicy goodness! You won't find this ice cream here at Five Star but you will have a party in your mouth with their gluten-free Fire Dish, Curry, Noodles and much more. My wife and I had lunch here today for the first time. We had the Bangkok chicken, stir fried shrimp, and pot stickers. It was all very good, fresh, shrimp perfectly cooked. The interior is more inviting than the exterior, with some interesting decor, photos of Thailand and a small grocery store with exotic ingredients. Looking forward to exploring more of the menu and some of the desserts. read more

My husband and I first met on a missions trip to Thailand and Thai food has become one of our favorites! This place is the closest we found in authenticity. We ordered some of our favorites such as the curry and pad Thai. Their food is delicious and prices are good. Our favorite thing to get here though is sticky rice and mango. Don't rule it out until you try it! So.Amazing!!! Sometimes we go just for the sticky rice! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to try authentic Thai food. read more

I LOVE Five Star Thai! Great food and very nice people. The basil fried rice is absolutely delicious and I always get the Tom Yum soup too. One time I called 10 minutes after they closed because I thought they were open an hour later than they actually were, and they ended up making my food for me anyway! How cool is that! Show your appreciation by leaving a tip. They deserve it! read more

Have gone here off and on for years. It's a local gem dive Asian restaurant. I say Asian rather than Thai as it's not traditional or at least doesn't have the Thai taste profile that screams Thai. 1) atmosphere is not great. A little cold and drab 2) cleanliness is ok, but walls could use a scrubbing. Doesn't feel clean. 3) food is generally very good. Not overly greasy. 4) service is really hit or miss. They tend to hire a lot of high school students. So service can be cold and/or non-existent I had the fire chicken today with extra chicken. It was very good. Had them make it very spicy and they did. Love it. This place could easily get a 4 or 5 star if they updated the inside and tried a little harder on authenticity. I'll go back, but typically i only take out for the reasons stated above. read more

Not a fan at all but I have friends that love this place so much. I really like Thai food and typically eat it in Chicago. People here are friendly and food comes out pretty quick. It just lacks a lot of flavor in my opinion. I think the only thing I can say I really enjoyed was the Chicken Satay. I ordered Pad Thai with extra Chicken. If this was extra chicken I'm sort of glad I asked for it? When I think of paying for extra chicken I don't think that I want to pay a lot of $$ to put 2 more little shreds in there. read more

This place was worth off getting off 65 for, and worth passing up everything between I-65 and it. We were road trip weary, bringing our daughter home from college and it was great to have a relaxing Thai dinner rather than a hurried burger. The food is solid Thai, good flavors, fresh and nicely spiced. We were happy the appetizers came quickly and all the entrees were good. The Drunken Noodles were the best of the three, followed by the Lemongrass vChicken and the Pepper Beef. I might usually give this 4 stars, but it gets a fifth for being where it was and what it was when we needed it badly. read more

BEST THAI ANYWHERE at least of anywhere else I've tried. Prices are reasonable especially for the portion size and the flavor. I always feel alive eating the Panang curry or the shrimp casserole. Great job staff! Very friendly! read more

A true hidden gem tucked away in a nondescript strip mall in Northwest Indiana. Although it doesn't look like much on the outside they have recently remodeled the interior and it very nice. But this review is really not about building it is about the food. I have eaten Thai Food across the USA and in my opinion Five Star is right at the top. We have been dining here for over ten years and it just keeps getting better. All of the standard Thai dishes are very well represented by the chef/owner and don't pass up the seafood specials. Give Five Star a try and you will be coming back for years! read more

Came here for the first time to try this place out. I ordered some beef pad thai extra egg no tofu to go. It's really good. Found me a little gem that will save a trip to Chicago when I'm craving for some thai food. The prices is not bad at all. Big portions for 12 bucks can't beat it at all. Too bad..this place has gone Way Down Hill! It actually pains me to write this, as I hate to write bad about anyone's business, but this needs to change, or they're going to keep losing business on their own merit. I've been to Five Star many times and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is very pleasant... small, quaint and full of character. The food is delicious and unlike no other. Matter of fact whenever I travel I make it a point to go to other Thai restaurants to compare and no one has ever topped the food at Five Star. I don't quite understand the negative reviews. Perhaps others have become so acclimated to mediocre Thai that they simply aren't used to truly authentic Thai. And for those who know nothing of Thai food, the staff is very knowledgeable and can make excellent suggestions for first timers. Don't pass this little gem up. 5-10 years ago this place would get a 5 * rating. Unfortunately the last couple years with the new owners has changed. The menu, food quality and recipes have changed. What used to be a weekly staple for me has diminished to once or twice a month. My normal dishes have become less authentic tasting, greasier, and lower quality. Sometimes ingredients will be missing all together, without even being notified. I hate to do it but it's still worth your time to try out. Make the decision for yourself.
