Europeans don't know how good they have it, with the best DJs rolling through their cities all the time and great clubs and music festivals everywhere. Thankfully, we have Flash in DC, where great DJs come through regularly. I don't know why they come, maybe it's the awesome sound system, but they come. I go here to dance. I don't go to the bar or up to the roof or anywhere else but to the main room to dance to thumping deep house and techno. I've seen Chris Liebing and DJ Bone recently, both incredible on that system, and Move D and Chus and Ceballos in May coming up. Can't wait. The only downside is the dance floor is small for a club. It ain't Nation, but there probably never will be another one in DC. read more

Pros- Great Music on all three floors Amazing sound system Solid dancefloor Roofdeck is nice Cons- Cover can be expensive (expect $20 as the night goes on) They will pull your drinks out of your hand at last call right after selling them to you. Me and my friends came here to have a good time..while they are easy with IDs the music is crap. I asked if the could play Drake's newest album 'Views' and they said "Absolutely NOT!!"..as if my request is unheard of. To get to the next floor..its a $10 dollar cover. My friend Danilo had been raving about Flash since it had opened recently and being the DC nightlife socialite I am, I was perplexed how I did not hear about it or know about it. So my fellow yelpers, this past saturday night, Danilo and I took our significant others to check out Flash. If you are into underground Techno and House music, this place is for you! Flash brings in a pretty good lineup of underground dejays from all over (ie: Europe (UK), NY, LA, Chicago, etc.) THE 411: Located a few blocks from the Shaw metro on the corner of 6th and Florida Ave (NE) you walk up to what looks like the surrounding "dive bar" entrances. You will encounter probably the most friendly/non-douchebag (smiling) bouncer for id check (21+ ONLY aka no candy kids/PLUR allowed thank god!). There is a bar/with food service immediately to your left with some stools. Looks very simple/industrial/bare bones. Wait to have a door opened for you where you are presented a token to put in a slot of the photo booth and yes, have your picture taken. I love photobooths! The opposite door opens and you pay a humbling $10 cover (this place is not like the larger DC no cover bars/clubs) have your hand stamped and walk up two flights of colorful graffiti painted stair halls. Open the door and welcome to FLASH! CLUBROOM LAYOUT: There is a bar in the back of the club when you first walk in which can be kind of a clusterfuck trying to enter and make your way through the crowd of people congregated around the bar. There are concealed/partitioned off individual bathrooms considerably clean for club bathroom standards. There is a dejay at the other end of the club with tables along each side. Although small and intimate, I really liked how low key, laid back and unpretentious FLASH was compared to the more notable DC nightclubs. There was a great mix of people: beautiful people dressed to the nines, techno kids dressed in sneakers and flats, etc and everyone was just vibing. The sound system is pretty good given the venue size (Flash is probably the only (or few) to showcase Full Fat Audio amplifiers, paired with a digitally processed, fully active, 4-way stereo Funktion-One sound system with over 30,000 peak watts) a.k.a concentrated sound i.e. I especially liked how the sound is so concentrated in the center of the dance floor so you can bop to the beats and feel the bass (no ringing ears) if you want to or head back to the bar and order a drink or have a conversation without screaming your lungs out. Seriously, for people that frequent clubs, i really appreciated the sound system. Although pretty dark, I thought the lights were pretty cool: simple and without giving you the feeling of having an epileptic seizure. Staff was nice and accomodating. There is a great selection of beer and spirits. There is also table service but I did not inquire on minimums, etc. Hopefully soon! The only criticism I have is to maybe highlight the dejay. You have great underground talent coming through this rather laidback/unpretentious club so focus should be on the music, the dejay, etc. Not so much a spotlight but something where I can see the dejay- it helps to see their expressions, gestures, feel the music from their soul. yea mannnn. Welp I'm going to say this, with the rise in EDM/Dance/Downbeat music in the airwaves and in social media this is definitely the club to get your taste of commercial and also underground dance music Now this review is objective and subjective because it's truth being told here.... So here we go; as a black guy who grew up on reggae/hiphop/and R&B i have always gravitated towards dance growing up but I never was able to connect to that crowd because of the neighborhoods I grew up in, but as I was able to move out and started meeting diverse people I was able to appreciated dance music even more. Flash delivers!!!!!! This club is utter lose control and dance the night away, because everyone becomes hypnotized by the deep trance/dance/edm and light effect show it really makes you blend in along with the scene. Status goes away in this type of club vs urban clubs because your there to, well, dance. No need for the "mogul" lifestyle and frown upon age(hence you to old to be in here like urban clubs) because music has no age limit, and being able to see young and old enjoying the atmosphere will have you partying. 2 levels see pics, if you already know then go but if your like me then you must go ASAP!!! read more

Always good for some old fashioned raving! Tickets can be fairly expensive some nights and the entertainment quality not worthwhile. If someone worth seeing is in town and is at flash then hands down great experience, otherwise you will be disappointed. Drinks are also pricey but that is what you get with a typical dance venue. Visiting Flash was one of the strangest experiences of my adult life. To sum things up, the place was dark and dank. Not dark like a normal club, but so dark that people were tripping over themselves. I say 'people' lightly, because the place was almost dead on a weekend night, except for a handful of people who were most definitely on drugs and leaning against the wall in a daze. My boyfriend witnessed some people dragging suitcases up the stairs to the club and asked the bouncer why. The answer? Oh, Flash is a multi-purpose space. Half nightclub, half hostel. Weird. Flash is a place that knows what they do and they do it very well. This is not Miami or NYC, so don't expect something ultra posh. Rather you are going to find an intimate venue, one, if not the best sound systems in DC, and some of the world's best DJs and producers. Also security is not here to be your friend. ARRIVAL Good location, lots of adjacent little bars and pizza parlors for both before and after. The usual doormen are definitely not what I'd call friendly, but not rude either. Inside, Flash is visually proper. Dim lighting with just enough lamps around the bar for you to see where you're going. Both the downstairs and upstairs room are accented with the right balance of steel and metal to make you feel like you're in something between a warehouse, and an old tavern. Upstairs is laced with strips of pink LED's, as well as antique style "flash bulbs" like on old camera's. It's a nice effect, kind of trippy, and if you stand far back enough from the elevated booth, an animated DJ will create a cool silhouette. Look out for all the funny little graffiti and stickers from local artists/crews hidden everywhere.Tickets are sold in the booth/coat room right before you go up the industrial stairwell. If you didn't get a pre-sale, the price will most likely be 5-10$ more then the "tickets at the door" price you saw online, even when the place is half empty. I used to do nightlife events, and I can smell a hustle. A word to the owners: Check your ticket girls. BAR The bar construction is simple, polished wood with a few notches in it for effect. No tacky lights. Both are spaced appropriately from the DJ, downstairs is linear with a few stools, and upstairs is an "L" shaped setup facing the DJ (so your back will be turned to the DJ). Drinks are reasonably priced, 9$ for Jamie, Sky, Jack. 5$ for domestics and 6-7$ for imports. They serve cocktails and shots in glass, which sure feels nice, although God forbid a dancing patron bump you and knock your drink out of your hand...shatters everywhere. I've never seen this at a dance club.It must be a pain in the ass to clean up, a safety hazard, and a high expense all rolled into one. Also, if you like to slide your highball from one hand to another on the bar, don't, a few planks need to be sanded down better and your drink will spill. The faces behind the bar are always changing. Most of of them are young females, and nice enough. Although the ones upstairs can be kind of catty and distant (usually because they've worked their way up from the downstairs). Don't expect any service recovery if someone knocks over your drink, no matter how much you've tipped all night. Also, don't shoot a balled up napkin into the garbage, because even if you used it to wipe up the soaking wet bar, and even if you make the shot...you'll be asked "not to waste my napkins". A Question for the owners: Are napkins more expensive than glass highballs? DANCE FLOOR The dance floor is spacious, I'd guess the max capacity is between 400-500. Very high ceiling, which is good for acoustics. Now, the DJ booth is elevated maybe 8 or 9ft in the air, which is inappropriate for an "underground" club. First, that's so 1998, plus instead of having the DJ close to you (so that you can see their hands) you get a giant black wall at the front of the dance floor, usually crowded with disengaged patrons.To both see the artist, and get the best sound, stick to the very middle of the dance floor. The lighting engineer is to the left of the DJ, there's enough space in between them that it isn't confusing. The new roof deck is nice for a cig and phone number, although no DJ on a Friday night? meh.... A word to the owner: TEAR DOWN THAT WALL VIP VIP is simply a few low standing tables along the left and right of the room (when facing the DJ). It's low key, there are no ropes, and you can actually bust a move on the little ledge on either side without a problem. SOUND Downstairs - Lounge vibe, good all around for convo and bouncing around. Upstairs - The bulk of the sound comes from 4 hanging speaker stacks, so within that "square" the sound is solid, but outside of it the energy level goes down, conversation levels go up, it's an acoustic "dead zone". Mid's and High's are fine, but the bass will never blow your guts out of your stomach. Which is what you need to in fact "get deep". BATHROOMS More aesthetically pleasing then most clubs, they almost feel like a hotel lobby. My problem is that they are all unisex, even though upstairs has 4 or 5 of them, there is ALWAYS a confusing line of people asking "are you in line?". At times the line stretches into the actual dance floor, and security is constantly knocking on the doors with flashlights, and while they do that a ton of cutting goes on. A word to the owners: Renovate to two large bathrooms, one for ladies, one for gentlemen, and people will regulate themselves, trust me on that. OVERALL Flash looks nice, and sounds alright. But it doesn't know if it wants to be a Super "EDM" Club, or a true gritty underground spot. I've yet to have a religious experience there, and I've left several times before the lights come on (I rarely do that). I recommend it for visitors to DC, but I'll def be searching for where the real heads are at before I come back. read more

Yo! When I first walked upstairs I felt like I was not in the states anymore. I can see why this club is a DJ destination as much as an electronic music lover's dream. One of the owners told me that they get requests from international DJ's to play their sound system. How's that for easy bookings? Great sound system. They put their heart and soul into the sound. It's not super loud but is crisp enough to balance everything out. The wall of subs at the DJ booth is that speaker phreaker's memory of the 90's. It's been a while since I've felt my throat vibrate by the sound. The music really is better when you can feel it. Smart lighting setup and as much as I love to hate on VIP tables these were some of the least douchey table patrons I've ever seen. The staff is on point as well. There were a few broken glasses throughout the night and within seconds, literally less than 10 seconds there was a broom,dustpan,mop,flashlight right there to clean it up. I was lucky to be one of the first people there because "I'm, like, with the DJ?" so I could see the place fill up, talk to the staff, chat with the bartenders and just hang out before it got super crowded. I think every person who worked there was happy that I was there and I think I thanked every one of them for a great place. I like to show love when it's deserved. This place won me over. My experience at Flash was very NEGATIVE. I was there on a Friday night, the upstairs sections were lively and music was good. You MUST watch out when you pay for your drinks at the bar! The bartenders themselves will try to steal your money. Initially, I ordered a jäger bomb on the top floor and the bill was $10 (average for DC prices). Later on, I ordered another jäger bomb with another bartender and got charged $11 this time. When I asked the bartender about the price increase, he proceeded to call me a liar and repeatedly said I was incorrect. I then pulled out my receipt from the first drink and he continued to say it was false and that my receipt was no good. After arguing for several minutes, he gave me back a dollar. This was neither Boris nor Paula, but the third bartender who is darker and bigger. The bad experience didn't stop there. Later I went downstairs to get another drink, this time they were out of Jäger, so the Spanish speaking bartender offered fernet. She told me the drink was $12, I gave her a $10 and two $1s. She took the money, walked to the register, hid a $1 and came back to ask for "the extra dollar I owed". There was no arguing with her as she pretended not to hear what I was saying. I gathered my friends and left immediately, the bartenders here are thieves that take advantage of their customers when they are given the benefit of the doubt, pick somewhere else to spend your night! read more

I saw the worst dj I have ever seen there in my entire life last night. As an EDM fan, Jan Krueger was hands down the most plain and boring dj I have ever seen. I usually love flash i go there for every flashy sunday they have but this past MLK weekend left me wishing i didnt. They advertised it as one of their big parties so i decided to get there at around 11:20 so i would have plenty of time to beat the price increase at midnight. Boy was i wrong. I literally waited more than 30 minutes OUTSIDE in freezing cold weather. By the time i got in it was already past midnight but i decided not to let that ruin my night. So i paid the fee and head to the coat check line just to find out it was full. They told us to come back in 20 minutes maybe someone was going to leave and we could take their spot as it was clearing out. So i head to the stairs to what is yet again another line because they were out of capacity so we waited a long time just to get to the second floor and the whole night was a nightmare because it was super packed and people were dressed for cold weather thinking they could check their coats which was not the case. Whenever you went to the top floor to get some air you had to wait like 10 minutes to go back to the 2nd floor because there were huge lines. I just wish this would have been planed better. Hopefully in the future they can come up with a plan so people are not waiting outside in freezing weather and also a better coat check system. read more

After walking through the front door on a Friday night, I first found myself in a well-lit bar area with a food menu (operates as a restaurant during the week), variety of great taps and correspondingly low-key atmosphere. No cover to hang out in this area. If you're looking to dance your pants off on the rumored dance floor, keep walking to the back, get in the photo booth, and off you go into a magical land of awesome decor and talented DJs playing underground synth electro, house and techno. Great layout with the bar taking the backseat to the DJ booth/dancefloor, which are the focal points. Did not hear one Hot 99.5 hit played here the ENTIRE NIGHT, thereby crowning it a new favorite dance spot in DC. read more

I don't particularly like EDM so I reeeeallly shouldn't have been here, but I came for a friend's birthday. $20 cover to get upstairs on a Friday night. Photo booth used to be free, now it's not. Super cramped dance area. Most people seemed to be on drugs (not surprised). Probably should've hated the spot, but objectively, I recognize that if people love EDM they'll enjoy Flash. I did like the top floor, which is where people go for socializing and smoking. If you don't want to pay the cover, you can stay downstairs since there's another DJ booth and bar there. Note that the bottom floor and top floor were cold so I recommend coming during the warmer season if you don't plan on being on the second floor. read more

**4.5 stars** I love this place and while there a lot of things that confuse me about this spot I still will come again and again. This is the place to be if you are an edm fan especially if you are into deep house/techno. It doesn't sound like they play electro or trance. Other than U street music hall, which can a stomping ground for the underage, there is no other club I know that consistently plays deep house. The first floor has a hipster bar feel and reminded me of like the Oregon Trail. The cover was $15 dollars. However, coat check was FREE and the drinks were pretty inexpensive. Two Jameson and gingers were $16 which I felt was certainly much lower than the typical club and less than a lot of places in DC. People perceive paying for entrance to clubs as petty and not chill which is the antithesis of what Flash is trying to be. You walk in through a super cool photo booth where you can take some pictures. Once inside you hear some groovy house beats. Dance the night away. Drink some fairly-priced-for-the-overpriced-area cocktails. It took me literally no time to get drinks. Win! The lights are out of this world. The walls are covered with little flashing lights. It's hard not to get stuck in this alternate universe of lights and sounds. read more

The upstairs bar is pretty unique- nice lounge area, great light display, high DJ booth. The sound system is pretty incredible, very bass dyiven and very electronic, very Euro. In essence, you feel light years away from Adams Morgan- like you could be in any club in East Asia, LA, Paris, Miami. For that experience, you get those prices- drink prices are pretty steep. Flash is a great electric music club with different levels, each it's own style and DJ (EDM, Deep House, etc). It is hands down the best dance club in DC. I've gotten free cover to the club by showing up prior to 11pm most nights, and there is seating spread throughout the club for the ladies to rest their feet. read more

Went to Flash to see Dubtribe Soundsystem, (House Music). I hadn't seen them in years and I had never been to Flash. FIrst I will say the soundsystem here is really good.The club is pretty new so it's nice but it's teeny. Two floors but very snug. Downstairs, outside is a patio with a couple tables and chairs to get some fresh air, (as it gets to be an inferno inside, due to size and amount of people.) Downstairs is a DJ booth and dancefloor, a bar with bar stools, a couple cozy chairs to lounge in, and a hallway with 2 single bathrooms that leads to a photobooth, so fun, the coat check and the door upstairs. Upstairs there is an L shaped bar in the right corner and a couple single bathrooms on the left. The upstairs is mostly dancefloor with some cozy couches with tables along the walls and around the DJ booth. The lighting in the walls and lasers are amazing. Really creates a fun, playful and exciting ambience. I had a couple drinks there, classy glassware and quite tasty. Not sure about the price cause someone else was paying. I'm guessing around $8. Dubtribe is old school and quite unique as are their followers, so I can't really compare the type of crowd to that which would typically be there otherwise. All in all it was a fun night of dancing dancing and more dancing. Get there early before the crowd to enjoy some drinks and cool tunes downstairs or to get settled in a cozy booth upstairs. Stay late after the crowd to continue dancing/drinking/mingling at your leisure since they are open until 4am. (NICE.) Ah and also, It was $15 dollars to see Dubtribe perform upstairs, which is not very much at all and totally worth it! I would definitely go again. read more

The first time I went here was right after it opened, and it was awesome. They didn't charge anyone in my party a cover, and I really liked the layout/decor. THAT was where my good experience ended - I've tried to go back twice. The first time they wouldn't let my boyfriend in because he was wearing flip flops (but their website and people who answer the phone will reassure you that they have no dress code) and the second time they were charging a $20 cover at 10:30 despite saying "free until 11" on their social media. Whoever said to skip this bar and go to U Street Music Hall was on point - there they have drinks that aren't watered down and exorbitantly priced, music that is actually good, and staff that isn't incredibly rude (unlike Flash). read more

I had been waiting forever to try this place. I think the layout is cool, with a large place for dancing on the second floor by the DJ booth. Upstairs is another DJ on the rooftop, with a lounge and view of the city. The clientele is a good mix of men and women, pretty mature on age (30 vs 21 you find in some clubs). The DJ that night was playing this like disco best over and over and we got bored and left, so it wasn't the best $20 investment ever. Starts getting hot around midnight. read more

This place would get negative stars if I could. Both djs as advertised were not there and the manager Sam was very rude. On top of that we still had to pay 30 to get in each to an overcrowded bar and a 40 min bathroom line wait.
