Always enjoy lunch here when visiting the area. Today, Saturday, was busy but the line inside to order moves quickly. Pleasant interactions with various staff. Once on pays you are given a number and food or special beverages make the way to your table. We enjoyed the French dip with delicious roast beef, caramelized onion, melted cheese and au jus. My partner had the roasted veggie melt. We ate half and saved the rest for dinner. Outdoor seating is our preference especially under the magnolia tree but we settled for upstairs in the covered area. It was quiet and other diners appeared happy with their food. I live in Shelby, but I have to talk myself out of driving the hour to get breakfast here every single day! Their baked goods are otherworldly, and the breakfast croissants are big enough that you can cut it in half and have the most awesome lunch, too! Don't judge this place by the exterior, that is, unless you're admiring the old world wood fired stone oven that is visible from the back parking lot. I wanted to buy at least one of everything in the display case--and that is only breakfast! Lunch would be amazing here, too--and you can even snag a good beer there! I LOVE the bakery. And I'm not the only one. This place is an institution. At one point I lived within walking distance and now live 6 states away and make it a point to stop in every time I'm back in WNC. The parking and lines are always crowded but it's worth the wait. I stopped for lunch at the Flat Rock Village Bakery before a show at the Playhouse. I scored parking behind the bakery and didn't need to go to the lot to the side of the bakery. They sell day old products at a discount and have a bakery case to catch your attention. The menu is on a chalk board behind the case. I had been planning on a sandwich but the wood fired pizzas seemed to be what was hyped up so I went with that. Drinks are bottled or canned but they did have some unsweet tea that was really good. The pizza was doughy and needed to be eaten with a fork and knife rather than picked up by the slice. I'm not sure if mine wasn't cooked properly or if it is always like that. I had enough after three slices. I should have gone with the sandwich. I liked some of the pastries I bought though. Service was friendly. This was our last stop on vacation because we wanted to take a few pastries to go. We ordered breakfast and coffee, also. I had an Asiago pesto bagel with butter and a drip coffee. The coffee is great (counter culture), but they ran out of medium roast while we were there. The bagels were awesome! My husband had a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich. Our to go items were a peaches and cream Danish (10/10, amazing and perfect), a cheddar and scallion scone (8.5/10 a very good, lots of scallions, balanced), and a chocolate croissant (also a 10/10). It's a very busy bakery, which is sometimes a bit overwhelming for me. It was definitely worth it for the yummy food, though. They have 50% off day old bread - we picked up a loaf of that mid-vacation to eat with leftovers. We appreciated the affordable baked goods and fast service. read more

You wouldn't have guessed it was a Monday morning by the substantial crowd at this bakery. It seemed the place to be in this town. They have a small interior and a multilevel deck outside. The fare includes baked goods and some fresh food to include pizza and salad. My salad was quite pleasant. I was glad for the option to order a half but it was still a decent size for the price and came with house croutons and vegetables that tasted fresh. My chai hit with a nice flavor, though it wore off a bit by the end. A lemon blueberry danish was apparently something you pick up at the register and is not sent to you like the other food if you dine in, but once I figured this out, I retrieved my danish. It was a robust flavor balance, though a little on the dry side and perhaps not the freshest item they had. They did have a vegan cookie and non-dairy milks for beverages; between the baked items and the salads you could do reasonably well. Still, there was plenty of quality here, and you'd be hard pressed to do better when looking for this sort of place. read more

We always love coming here! It's cute and we love that most items are made in house. The one way there could be an improvement would be serving simple side options faster when sandwiches and pizza have a long wait. Today, we were told a $4 cup of soup would take 40 minutes. I've worked in many restaurants over the years and the industry standard is to serve what can be served, such as scooping a cup of soup. Wow, amazing cafe in Flat Rock that was a perfect al fresco lunch stop during our adventures from Brevard, Sky Top Orchard , and nearby waterfall hiking. Fresh homemade bread, pizza, sandwiches, quiche, etc. Walk into the adorable shop, order at the counter, pay, find a table. Food is delivered to your table. Dog friendly patio, shaded under a huge tree. The veggie tarts, pizza, salad were all excellent. Genuine sourdough bread (no yeast) was brought home...literally back to Florida as a yummy souvenir! This place was an awesome lunch spot! We were travelling through town and came on a Sunday for lunch. Parking can be tight next to the restaurant, but you can easily park in a lot across the street. Line of people when we arrived - they are clearly well known in the area for baked goods and lunch/pizza's. My bride had the Butternut Squash & Kale Pizza ($16) and loved it - very well cooked and good covering of toppings. I went with the Turkey & Avocado on nine grain ($10) and it was excellent....super fresh and well proportioned. I didn't have a chance to try anything because I didn't realize I needed to wear a mask and an employee shot me a nasty glare. Sorry for the inconvenience, but you could just say, "Do you have a mask?" After browsing the food, nothing looked overly appetizing. However, I do highly recommend Honey & Salt next door--excellent food. I'll be in Flat Rock for a longer rafting trip at Green River Cove Tubing--also excellent. The pastries are flavorful and perfectly baked; my personal favorite is the ham and cheese croissant. Ask them to warm it up in the wood-fire oven! Today I ordered a half-size turkey avocado sandwich with bacon. The portion was perfect for a light lunch and it was an incredible value. Everything tasted as fresh and can be and it was absolutely delicious. Pro-tip: Check out the day old basket for half price pasteries! Just toss em in the toaster oven for an easy, inexpensive breakfast. If you are visiting H-ville, this bakery should definitely be at the top of your list. You won't regret it! read more

Always love to visit from SC to get FRVB pizza, along with a trip to Sky Top Orchard in season. Visited last week and had several rude experiences with an employee during our visit. This has never happened that I remember. I don't like to post online because I'd rather deal with an establishment directly BUT after emailing the bakery over a week ago, I never got a response. After reading more reviews on Yelp, apparently there are several rude employees or either we're all having interactions with the same individual. Don't lose your customers over an employee who obviously isn't happy to be working or to have a job. And don't ignore your customer's comments because we are why you are in business. read more

I have been to this restaurant twice in two days. First day, picked up the Classic Margherita pizza. Absolutely delicious. Thin crust, perfect portions of sauce and cheeses--makes you want to eat every bite. Second day, ate at the restaurant and got the croissant sausage, egg, and white cheddar cheese sandwich. My friend got the avocado toast (on sourdough) and fried eggs on top. Croissant was just as delicious as the pizza. My friend love the avocado toast and was very flavorful. They bring the food out relatively fast. So, service was great! This is a restaurant where they provide you with a number on a stand that you bring to your table. This bakery is an absolute asset to the community and I have always appreciated it and the people who work there. That said: I have had multiple issues with the food runners and back house staff being frustrated, and on occasion straight up rude. Orders to go are wrong or missing entire elements. To-go ordering is a nightmare during peak hours and getting help from the staff always feels like an imposition on their time even when you have a legit question. The first instance I had with this was when I ordered a 'to-go' order which... you think you'd save time by ordering it 'to-go'? They don't actually place the 'to-go' orders in bags nor were there any self serve bags available at the pick up point hey designated. You can either try to carry 6 boxes of food plus drinks across the gravel parking lot or go back to the line at the front of the house and wait to request a bag to place your order in. It's a confounding mess. I have lived this first hand and let the front staff know that I needed coffee drinks and bags. I waited at the back of the house next to the pick up table for another ten minutes. I asked a food runner about the bags and coffee drink and she snapped, "you should do that up front" and then ignored me. I said "I did!" as the door slammed and she was outside and gone. A lovely young man who normally works the front end then helped find the bags and the drink order with a beautiful smile. Sadly upon arriving home the order was incorrect but missing elements were refunded via phone. That was the first time I noticed the communication disconnect. Fast forward a month. We arrived for a lunch- just a half sandwich and a salad another sandwich and a coffee drink. We were informed it would be a 35 minute wait for our lunch order. No problem! We were used to it and completely fine with waiting on the lovely patio. 30 minutes came and went. 40 minutes, then 45... we asked a runner and they said our order was up next- she was polite and kind although you can see the stress behind her eyes. We wait another 20 and our lunch hour is over. I ask again and she said 'she'd check'? More time passes other parties served. No one has checked in with us or even mentioned what happened to our food. We needed to find out what was going on because we literally had to leave to go back to work. Again, the staff, who are stressed start with attitude about how we shouldn't be waiting in that area and we need to leave to keep the walkway clear. Their first concern was to get us out of there because they are so overburdened with orders and struggling to keep up. It's clear on their faces. And let's be EXTREMELY clear: we *had* been waiting outside- forty minutes without bothering them and then the last twenty we started asking questions. We asked the runner three times about our order with no response other than we were 'up next'. We didn't want to be in the hallway to bother anyone. We didn't have any other choice because we needed help and to leave because the time we had to eat our lunch is gone. We needed to get this resolved the fact we paid for food that never arrived so we could go back to work hungry. We stepped outside and finally the manager of the back comes out to apologize. Our order never made it to the kitchen because it was lost. She says "this happens far more often than she would like due to poor wifi issues". She offered to put in the order again but we were out of time. She apologized and refunded the order. She did everything she could and was completely kind *once* she realized there was an error on the restaurant's behalf. I want to acknowledge the food runner- she was lovely when I asked her about the order. Unfortunately she told us our order "was next" at the 40 minute mark when it *clearly* wasn't because it was lost. We could have reordered if she had checked in with the order or if she had let a manager know there was an issue. She did neither so we waited another 20 minutes and had to leave without even receiving a lunch order to take with us. Whether it was a to-go order which was impossible to get "to-go" or an order that hasn't made it out both times we were originally met with frustration which then eventually gave way to apologies once the staff realized there was a problem. That's just it- a customer CAN'T ask about their food without a dismissive or rude response and it's always more effort to try and figure out where your food is or if it's ever going to appear at all? I am writing this long *ss review because the staff at the Flat Rock Bakery deserve better resources to be able to communicate with each other and remove some of the stress off of the backend team. If an investment in process or tech to help them out isn't forthcoming I don't see this situation changing- handwritten notes on where to wait aren't a great band-aid for a much larger problem. I love, love, love this place but it'll be a long time before I go back again. I'm just so sad. read more

Looks can be deceiving. Arriving, this place looks like a badass chill bakery. Instead, the staff was so salty that it may have actually changed the flavor of my bagel with smoked salmon. THAT dish came with a funky pesto and half a block of Kraft cream cheese. Once I scraped off about 1500 calories, it got much better. About average, as breakfast bagels go DO NOT ask them if they can reheat a ham and cheese croissant! It's made with gruyere, which really doesn't have the same mouth feel cold. The chill post-hippy thing evaporates, and snippy French patisserie gives you that curt, "Are you out of your MIND?" vibe. Cashier just slammed the door shut on turning the rock-hard, overcooked roll into something at least soft enough to put a fork and knife into, and made me feel so Karen for just asking. The Asiago scone had a good taste, but was drier than a professor lecturing on modalities of sedition. Patio has a nice chill vibe. Too bad the "have it our way" crew SO quashed my Qi (Chee). With bread hard-eee, it could be a three. Got a class at Skrew U. So now it's down to two. read more
