Today was the Wednesday Burger Special and was it special!!!! For $20 you get a juicy and delicious burger with various toppings and cheeses and a beer/wine/cider. Our whole group ordered the burgers and no one was disappointed ! Perfectly cooked with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, pickles and blue cheese hit the spot perfectly. Medium cooked was so juicy. The French fries were deliciously crispy and flavorful. Also a hit. Got Doc's hard cider to wash it all down. The waitress was friendly and attentive. The service was quick and the food hot. The restaurant is clean and very nice. Make reservations before you come. read more

My wife and I came 9pm on a Saturday night after things started to calm down and I was stunned at how bad the service was. - Our server didn't notice that we sat down at a table and told us "we blended in" even though I spoke to him face to face right beforehand. - He didn't bring us a menu or silverware without us reminding him. He didn't take the menu back either. He didn't hand me a pen when he gave me the check. - He took my steak order but didn't ask for my choice of sauce or for my preferred temperature. Nonetheless, I told him "medium rare". It came out medium well. He said "it happens". Well, so do 1-star reviews. read more

This is the second time we went to this restaurant. The first time was at best fair. But the second time was absolutely horrible. This place needs a restaurant makeover ASAP. For a steakhouse to charge those prices and deliver thin dried out. Steak is unacceptable. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody. Service was at best inattentive. For the amount of money you are going to spend for two appetizer or two and drinks, you're better off staying at home and barbecuing and making your own drinks. At least when you eat the steak, it's not dried out, thin and overcooked. on with the plates they use? Those white plates belong in a cafeteria set up. this place needs a makeover from every perspective.. read more

Myself and a group of my friends were in the area for a hike and decided to come to Flatiron for dinner. Dinner was on a Friday and we were able to make a dinner reservation the day of for 8, so its not a super busy place that you need to reserve ahead of time for. I shared the steak tartar and thought it was pretty good. I wasn't a fan of the mushy texture, just reminded me that I'm chewing on raw meat, but the flavor was good. For my entrée I got the NY strip. The steak was good and well cooked. I really liked the potato and spinach sides that the dish comes with. The only thing I had that I didn't like was the creamed spinach. It was a bit bitter and the top portion of the spinach was cold while the bottom was warm. Overall, I thought dinner here was really nice. Service was great too and I personally didn't find the restaurant too load. read more

Went here tonight with my wife and son. All of us had the NY strip steak. All were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Mashed potatoes were delicious as were the green beans. Overall a really good dinner with very good service as well. We will definitely be back. read more

We returned to Flatiron for the first time in over a year and were not disappointed. Flatiron offers well-executed straightforward fare, with a dash of their own personality. Steaks are accompanied by a sauce of your choice, all very good (the habanero is my favorite). The burgers are flavorful, with the merguez spiced lamb-burger a particular treat. Service is friendly, the food arrives in a timely manner, and the bar has a good variety of cocktails and beers. The whole experience is fairly priced. All told, Flatiron remains a reliable fixture in the region if you're looking for a good steak or a just a few apps and a beer. read more

This is going to be one of my most difficult reviews. When we arrived we were greeted immediately and seated. Our waitress was very friendly! She went over the specials and the list of appetizers and meals the weren't available. Disappointing us as we looked at their menu before arriving and our potential choice weren't available. Our waitress suggested their scallop appetizer and steak tartare appetizer. Both we're delicious. For our meals my wife decided to have the duck special and I had the jerk pork Both dishes were flavorful. To finish our evening we had their biscotti desert. Ending our evening on a high note. Our waitress and rest of the staff were very attentive. If it wasn't for the several items not being available could have been a fivstar review. Noise level was on the high side the restaurant was packed. Definitely will be going back for another try! Update: visited Flatiron again last night. We were a party of 3. We were greeted promptly. Our cocktails were great. Our appetizers came shortly after our drinks arrived. This visit all our selections were available and were delicious. We had the oysters, steak tartare, and the snails! Our meals came in a timely manner and were all on point with the flavors. The wait staff was very attentive. Definitely a much better dining experience than our first visit! Flatiron is one of the more reliable high end restaurants in the area. I've been a few times now with friends and family and have never gotten anything we didn't like. As with a lot of fancier places, the prices seem a little too inflated for what you get, but that's part of the deal. The ambiance is nice and servers are always amazing. Overheard at our dinner table: "I don't mind that they were sold out of a few things. A place like this deserves to be able to sell out its items." Flatiron's entrees are delicious at very reasonable prices, disguised by being in a really casual and friendly atmosphere. The beer/wine/drink menu was actually printed on 4 pages and butterfly-clipped together...I don't care how it's given to me, I just really liked the selection. The entrees were well prepared and accompanied by sauces which really accentuated the flavor. For my scallop tacos (something I had as yet never tried anyplace else), I was pleased to discover that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts, including the soft freshly-made flatbread shells, seasoned cabbage, and scallops which were tasty enough that they could have stood alone as an entree. The duck breast was fantastic. The dinner menu is not large, but there is definitely something for everybody, including musical entertainment some nights. We did not have any desserts, but based on the descriptions (and to some extent the unusually higher than average prices), I assume they are all made on site and decadent. I must admit, I mostly make it to dinner in Red Hook on Sundays and Tuesdays because I'm a Curry House buffet addict. Now I have reason to dine in Red Hook any other night of the week. read more

I was craving meat and a good steak is truly hard to come by in this area, but with a name like Flatiron, how can you go wrong? I did take away as my husband is pescatarian and although I ordered no sauce, the steak was covered in a strange thin white sauce that was all inside the container and bag. I'm not sure if this was the creamed spinach side, but that in itself was bland and dry so may have lost its sauce completely and therefore should have been packaged separately. The steak, besides the watery sauce, was cooked to perfection but just to get mashed potatoes (something that comes normally with a steak), I had to pay an additional $6. So, for a great steak covered in bad, watery sauce, plain creamed spinach, and mashed potatoes, which was a very small portion (that were only mashed without butter or cream so I'm not sure how they can be called mashed), I paid $36.00. My husband was shocked when he picked up the order. I was shocked when he told me the price and I saw the quality of the food. He was shocked when he carefully picked it up and brought it carefully back to me, but yet it still looked like a bomb went off inside the container and outside of it. I wouldn't go back, but now you know why. And perhaps if you do take away you could ask for the sides to be separate and why the potatoes don't come with something that's $28.00 since we're talking about an additional .50 cent side. read more

Unfortunately have to write this review as have usually had a lovely experience at Flatiron. Last night arrived at 8:15 and was seated. We were waiting for two others to arrive but ordered drinks and an appetizer while waiting. Our friends arrived at 8:35, seated and settled into look at the menu. As the waiter returned and we were going to give our order, he informed us that the kitchen and bar are now closed. Stunned given there were people at the bar and eating their meals, we asked why. He said maybe because we're not busy. We asked if the manager/owner could explain as they should have told us it was last orders if closing teh kitchen early. The waiter returned saying they were just closed. Finally the owner came over and said he was busy talking with friends and that he decided to close early and we can go. Not sure what is going on for a restaurant owner to ignore customers, close early in their face with no rationale or warning, even the waiter didn't know until we put in an order. The restaurant is open usually to 9pm on a Thursday. Upon leaving the owner was back behind the bar chatting with his friends who i guess are more important than other customers. I gave one last request to why he would treat customers this way and expect them to return. He said he didn't care. Maybe it's a bad night for him for some reason. But it's not a way to keep locals supporting your restaurant. Again, we've had lovely service from Jessica who wasnt there last night. maybe something is wrong and it's an aberration but it's hard to see ever returning. Small but pleasant dining room. Outdoor tables are nice, but glarey and hot until the sun sets. Food is generally quite good: steaks are the main draw, perfectly cooked as requested. Service is good. It's very difficult to book a table unless you call when the staff is answering phones, which isn't until shortly before the place opens for dinner. Flatiron is our favorite restaurant to go to. As parents of three kids, we do not get to go out very often, usually only about once a year for our anniversary. This is the spot we pick every time. We have never been disappointed. The food & drinks are always amazing. My favorite is the hanger steak & frites. It is cooked perfectly every time. Since my last review, we've been here at least ten times, and it keeps getting better. The steaks are more flavorful -- though undercooked once or twice (I asked for medium rare and it was very rare) -- and the fries, and even the bread is better. The best dish to get is the hanger steak and frites. the famous brussels sprouts salad is definitely tasty, but the plating seems haphazard, and the price inflated for the small portion. The dessert souffles, though, are scrumptious. What pushes them up to five stars is the service: always attentive and super friendly. read more

We went tonight for dinner, and I didn't have a reservation, but they found us a table. I ordered clam chowder, tomato base and the clams were plentiful. My husband had the fried zuchinni and like it, but mine was better. The service was great, Halloween dressed staff which added a festive look for dinner. I ordered the rib eye steak medium and it was perfect not too well done and not raw. With it we had the french fries homemade and very good. My husband had the scallops and they were awesome, I am ordering them next time. Its a bit loud so many people in the space, but I believe they do take out too. Definitely a five star restaurant. Over the last week my husband and I have been visiting the Rheinbeck Valley. We decided to have one last dinner in town to celebrate a wonderful stay in Red Hook. We are from Northern California, home to some terrific restaurants. We have to say, what a treat to dine at Flatiron. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed by a warm ambiance and the service was stellar!!! And then there was the food - everything from the fresh oysters to our main course of hanger steak was absolutely delicious. My husband took me there tonight for my birthday dinner. We were seated and then the restaurant got busy. Our waiter took our appetizer and drink order after several minutes waiting. That was the last time we interacted with him. We felt like the unwanted step child as a table of two, his smallest. He never told us the specials, didn't bring any of our drinks or food. He didn't even take our dinner order. Our glasses, including water glasses were empty for well over 10 minutes without so much as a question. We had to ask the girl who brought us bread for more to drink. If we were critics, which in another few years, we may be, he would be slammed. The saving grace to this place is that the food is good. My duck breast was delicious as was my husband's prime rib eye steak. He thought the octopus appetizer needed acid to cut the bacon fat, but was still good. My fried squash appetizer was very well seasoned and the sauce was nice. We probably won't head back here, even though we've been several times. Service is a sticking point. We don't expect perfection, but at least some attention, especially at a place like this. We've had much better service at a local diner or IHOP even. read more

I had hangar steak and it was cooked exactly to my instructions. I ordered a side of spinach instead of the fries, and it was sautéed in garlic and olive oil and very good. The portions were generous, so I took some home. The only complaint is that the main dining room was a little warm. It didn't seem as if there was any air conditioning inside the restaurant. read more

As much as we like to explore new places, we have our "go to" spots, and Flatiron, a mere few miles from home, never fails to be fabulous. It's a steakhouse, sure, and every steak I've ever had there is cooked to perfection and a master cut, but don't discount the burgers, the sides, the drinks, and the welcome you get each and every time. Pre-fix is always a great deal, but what means most to us is the quality of the food and the fabulous people who own and operate it who make you feel like a friend coming over for dinner. Do yourself a favor and make it there - and try everything they offer on that wonderful menu. Cheers! read more

We've enjoyed Flat Iron from the time it opened. Three of us had dinner there last night. Hadn't been there in several months. Enthusiastic, sincere greeting from the owner who seated us and mentioned it was the same table we were at the last time we were there. She remembered. I didn't. The chef (her husband?) came over to point out there was a new menu. Great. Main course beef was very good: a NY strip steak ordered rare that came out medium rare as anticipated. (Almost every restaurant overcooks beef.) Came with delicious creamed spinach. Two orders of hanger steaks were also very good, served with great French fries. A shared side of "BBQ Brussel sprouts" was terrific. The appetizers were two frisee lardon salads and "cast iron roasted octopus with red cabbage & bacon kimchi & aioli." That poor octopus. Too much going on in that concoction. Good fresh octopus should be served griled, virtually unadorned. That dish was unappealing. The frisee lardon salads with a poached quail (?) egg were good, but were overdressed and the lardon bits were too small. (Les Baux in Millbrook serves the gold standard of Frisee lardon salad with a poached quail egg.) Two excellent desserts, a chocolate souffle and an elaborate creme brule. Success, however, is in the details. One double espresso was ordered. The waiter brought it out in a glass espresso cup and plopped it on the bare table with no saucer and no small spoon. He left a little basket with sugar packets. We couldn't get his attention or that of any other staffer to request artificial sweetener and an appropriate size spoon. The espresso sat there untouched until he came back with the desserts by which time is was no longer hot. "Can I get Splenda, please?" No, he says, "we don't have any." How come, it's a Saturday night. "We ran out." Obviously. And he never suggested any other artificial sweetener. OK, you can take back the espresso, he was told. "You don't want it?" he asks, with no "sorry." Suggestion to management: be aware that you're out of artificial sweetener and send a staff member across the road to the Mobil station shop to buy a couple of boxes. Unlikely we were the only table last night requesting it. The staff at Flat Iron is usually excellent, with less turnover than many restaurants. Our waiter last night appeared to be new there and more than a bit nervous. Additional and better training and monitoring would help. read more

Overall, great food. I ordered steak tartare as an appetizer-it was very flavorful and very different from anything I've ever tried at a restaurant. For an entree I ordered the scallops with fregola and beets. I had never tried this type of pasta before, and it was definitely tasty. I'm a all about trying new things and sometimes this doesn't turn out so well, but this time it was definitely a hit. On the other hand, it took awhile for the waiter to get us our drinks, our food and our bill. They started to get busy when we walked in, but I feel like we shouldn't have had to wait 35 minutes to get our check. Also, he wasn't sure what any of the drinks we were asking for were, and this was a bit unsettling. The food was great, but I was less than impressed by the service. read more
