Please don't let the name of this place fool you. Yes, they can help relax and soften you feet and…read moreyou face, but that's not all. Oh no, they also provide health, beauty and relaxation treatments on pretty much the rest of you too. This is a small and comfortable spa/salon situated in the swish Pontcanna area of Cardiff, under a mile from the centre of town. It's a bit of a one-stop-shop for all your salon needs, as they have a massive variety of treatments to choose from. Facials, manicures, chiropody, reflexology, Indian head massage, ear piercing, hot stone massage, seaweed treatments, waxing... The staff here are very lovely and, importantly, well qualified in their fields of expertise. You really get the impression that they know what they're talking about, and that was only when I went in for a price list. They also have a range of products and gifts on sale, as well as vouchers available if you wanted to treat someone to a relaxing afternoon (or if you know someone with an uno-brow, who just won't take the hint.)

The Feet and Face Place has always struck me as a little bit odd. Even more so now that they have…read more'before and after' shots of some kind of tummy treatment gracing their windows! Makes you wonder whether your feet and face are in all the right places! But, of course, they offer a comprehensive beauty spa range including; facials and anti aging treatments right through to massage, inch loss and hair removal. To be honest this is not my kind of place. I'm all for health and beauty, don't get me wrong, but I'd prefer a different start point than is offered here. I like to begin at the beginning, starting with the inside before I attempt to do anything superficial. I find it saves money! For this reason I'm more likely to go to Gaia around the corner. It's not as flash as The Feet and Face Place, but it offers curative treatments as well as the purely cosmetic. It also provides Ayurvedic nutrition and lifestyle consultations, which deal with health and beauty on an essential level. One thing in their favour is that the The Feet and Face Place offer Reflexology, which certainly does work on a more profound level than their other treatments.

Gaia Lifestyle has two clinics in Cardiff, one in Pontcanna and another in Roath. They are…read more'dedicated to creating awareness of the benefits of Complementary Therapies, Ayurveda, Yoga and more'. Positioned around the corner from The Feet and Face Place, which provides a plethora of treatments that deal with looking good on a pretty superficial basis, I have to admit preferring the Gaia approach to health and beauty. It's not as flash as The Feet and Face Place, but it offers curative treatments as well as the purely cosmetic. (One thing in their favour is that the The Feet and Face Place offer Reflexology, which certainly does work on a more profound level than their other treatments). The Gaia Lifestyle Centre in Pontcanna operates an appointment only system, (as does their other clinic). They do not provide a reception as such, and so bookings are made with the individual practioners. A full list is available on their well maintained website. www.gaialifestyle.com/

Gaia's Ayurvedic treatments were what attracted me to try this place out, and I can only report…read moreback on this small area of their far wider range of holistic alternative treatments. Ayurvedic massages are meant to be incorporated into part of an overall treatment programme, often also incorporating yoga and nutritional advice. The practitioner at Gaia starts off by having a consultation with you about your lifestyle and then goes on to suggest massage treatments, and offers advice about yoga practice and nutrition. What I am most keen to tell everyone about, however, is the divine Ayurvedic Shirodhara treatment available here. This is also known as the 'third eye drip', which sounds far less appealing than it actually is! Basically, you start off enjoying a face, neck and scalp massage, and then the practitioner sets off a flow of warm oil onto your third eye on your forehead, creating the most unbelievable feeling of relaxation and peacefulness. I would actually go as far as to say this treatment totally transports you elsewhere, inducing a kind of dream like state without actually sending you to sleep. I can't recommend it highly enough, based on my own experiences!

Cowbridge Road East isn't necessarily the first place that would spring to mind if I was after a…read morebeauty treatment, but now Ridhi's Beauty has appeared you can actually get a wide range of treatments here - from pre-holiday waxes (full legs £17), body exfoliation, manicures and pedicures, to relaxing massage and facials. They also do henna tattoos, bleaching (of facial hair), ear piercing and threading. First impressions aren't that good. The shop has a cheap look about it, with way too many hand-written signs advertising random services. With alarm bells ringing, I was only going to ask for a price list to take away, but the lady on reception was so friendly and professional I decided to ask about their 30-minute mini facial (£18) - and before I knew it I was agreeing to have one there and then. In fact, my mini facial didn't actually seem that "mini" at all. The beauty therapist thoroughly cleansed, toned, exfoliated and applied a mask to my face - and afterwards my skin felt as clean and smooth as it has done after a full facial at a far more expensive beauty salon. Despite appearances, this place is clean and friendly, and after this first experience I'd be willing to give it another try in the future.

Wanna be beautiful? You probably already are. Some people reckon it takes work. I'm not convinced that all of the treatments on offer are strictly necessary, but hell, it feels nice to get pampered once in a while. Ridhi's can fix you up. They offer: Massage treatments, Manicure, Facials, Colouring - high / low lights, Waxing, and Makeovers. Eyebrow treading is cheap as chips (and a burger) £4.50 and they give you a nice shape and, added bonus, staff are friendly not snooty, which helps make those painful waxing sessions less painful.
