While driving across the country with my 11-year-old son, we stopped here to pay our respects and learn more about this side of September 11th. I was in college when the attacks happened, and like everyone alive that day, I have vivid memories. I was genuinely moved to tears while walking through the visitor's center. Hearing recorded messages that passengers left their loved ones was especially gut wrenching. The walk through the field to the memorial was especially impactful. So peaceful and silent yet eerie to think it was so recently a scene of violent tragedy. The park service did a great job of memorializing and honoring the victims. This is a tough visit, but an important stop to learn more about an all too recent and tragic chapter in American history. read more

The visitor center is thoughtfully done, and as someone who remembers September 11th all too well, hearing the live news replays hit me hard -- I had to step away for a moment to collect myself. I could have sworn I reviewed this (& posted pics) the one and only time I went several years ago. It's quite a large area (as you would imagine) with memorials and tributes all about. There is also a visitor center as well. We stopped on the way back to Pittsburgh from one of our many DC roadtrips. It's located in Somerset County in a very small and rurl town called Shanksville which is about an hour and a half from Pittsburgh. The day of our visit was extemely windy and I understand that area because of the height of the land, etc. does tend to get windy. It was extreme that day. Even though it was busy with a lot of people, it was still eerily silent and at the same time peaceful. It was kind of surreal seeing the rock where it happened and having a full view of the crash site. Very impactful visit. read more

Difficult to walk through the visitors center and read, view personal items and hear the last voices from those on that terrible day. It doesn't cost to park or enter the visitors center. Everything about this is wonderful. It is an interesting, somber, and well-done memorial. I got choked up more than once, but especially listening to the voice messages from passengers on Flight 93 left for loved ones. The museum is well-maintained, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the serious tone of it is appreciated. When you look out the large window at the boulder that marks the crash site it seems surreal and difficult to imagine. It is also hard to believe that we are coming up on the 25th anniversary of that day. I feel like it was yesterday, yet at the same time it feels like a lifetime ago. I can remember the weather that day, the phone calls I made, and what I was wearing. Most of all, I remember the feelings that I felt when I found out about it. I think they did a great job with detailed information about every aspect of Flight 93. I didn't know the crew personally, but I've flown with the spouse of one of them. Life is fragile. The decent was very good with my boys and got them sworn in as junior rangers and made them feel comfortable to ask questions about the crash and the park. I was there on Monday, December 1. There was only about two or three other groups in the place so it was very quiet. Which was nice because this is a very solemn experience. I visited here probably 15 years ago when it was the temporary memorial in a tin shed. They've done a nice job with this. You cannot take any photos in the visitor center due to the sensitive nature of the objects. They have a station where you can listen to three of the recorded phone calls of the people on the plane. That was very emotional. The crash site in memorial area are also very solemn and done very nicely. read more

Pretty neat place to stop by! It was a little bit eerie when I decided to go due to it being overcast, sprinkling, and extremely cold but the silence was nice (when I got alone)! I did happen to run into some middle schoolers on a field trip, which were the usual loud yelling & not considerate of anyone else's experience.. not sure why teachers can't put these children in check based on where they're visiting. I would love to come back a day when it's nice out and I'm able to walk the trail! The amount of land to explore is quite large, but I had to get back on the road. I also didn't get to hear the wind chimes on the Tower of Voices because it wasn't windy enough (needs 12-15mph) but I'm kind of glad it wasn't since it was already cold without it! It's humbling to imagine what the victim's families and the victims had to go through & changed how things were forever. A moving memorial tribute to the heroes of Flight 93. We arrived after the Visitor Center had closed, but walking the flight path and looking out onto the field where Flight crashed, and then seeing the path continue on field level near the Wall of Names, was a touching tribute in and of itself. The Tower of Voices is a bit further towards the entrance of the park and was under construction but still a beautiful monument. We had previously visited the temporary memorial to pay our respects, but now that the permanent memorial has been installed, it seemed appropriate to return. The design was really well thought out and executed - very respectful in honoring our fallen heroes. While there are three major places to visit, there are numerous touches all around to take in as you approach. There is a large parking lot located near the Visitor's Center, and as you get out and head towards the building, one can note indicators of the times the other planes went down. The very end of the walkway overlooks the field and has a clear window with "A common field one day. A field of honor forever" embossed on it. The Visitor's Center can be emotionally/mentally challenging to go through, but it's so very important if you can. There is footage and discussion of the day, the specifics around Flight 93, and a wall of portraits of our 40 heroes that shares information about their lives and interests, as well as recordings of some of their final messages. There is a small shop available here. You can walk or drive down to the Memorial Plaza (another parking area is available down here), which has been beautifully executed, including 40 polished marble panels engraved with each hero's name, contrasted against the unpolished marble you pass during your approach. A hemlock gate fences the plaza off from the actual site, and the hemlock was chosen because the field is near a hemlock grove. It also features 40 angled cuts. A third major piece is the Tower of Voices, a 93 foot tower featuring 40 chimes that sound when the wind reaches 12-15 mph. The unique design of the tower is intended to optimize the ability of the wind to reach the chimes, but if it is a calm day, there is a QR code available on nearby signage to scan and hear them. We visited the Flight 93 National Memorial on our way back from Falling Water. The drive took about an hour and it was worth the stop. Admission to the memorial and park is free. I did not realize that the memorial is part of the National Park Service. If you have a National Park Passport, you can get it stamped at the visitor center. If you've ever visited any sort of memorial, you know that every detail is done with intention. For instance, the walk way to the visitor center follows the same path as the plane's descent into the field. The memorial is divided into three sections: The Visitor and Learning Center, Tower of Voices, and Memorial Plaza. We spent about two hours exploring everything. Upon entering the Visitor Center, we were greeted by a park ranger. He gave us a map and explained the layout. The Flight 93 exhibit is located in the Visitor Center and photos are not allowed. It's a very moving experience and it's so sad to hear the voices of some of the passengers as they called their friends and families from the plane. The Learning Center was closed, however I was able to catch a glimpse of an exhibit through the windows about the health effects of 9/11. We went to Memorial Plaza next. We drove, but you can walk the trail to the Plaza. The day we visited, they had an educational talk titled "Called to Action: The Flight 93 Story" however we did not have enough time to stay for it. We did walk down to the Wall of Names where all of the names of the flight crew and passengers are engraved on white marble tablets. You can also see the sandstone boulder that marks the spot of the crash site through the Hemlock fence. There was an employee at the Wall who was available to answer questions. We ended our visit at the Tower of Voices. It is located near the main entrance a couple of miles from the Visitor Center. The Tower is so beautiful. We were able to hear some of the wind chimes, however the wind speed wasn't quite high enough (12-15 mph) to hear many of them. The intentionality is very apparent in the design as the Tower is 93 feet tall and contains 40 wind chimes. The Flight 93 memorial is a beautiful tribute to the brave men and women who did what they had to do, to prevent the plane from striking the Capitol. Thank you for your sacrifice. We stopped by Flight 93 Memorial on our way back from a visit to Pittsburgh. We wanted to come visit for a long time but it's really in the middle of nowhere and a good 2 hour drive, so an excursion from Pittsburgh is as ideal as it could be. In our minds, the Tower of Voices stuck to mind when thinking of Flight 93 Memorial as seen in the media. So as we drove past the sight of it, we thought we were there. But it wasn't until nearly 2.5 miles later did we finally reached the Visitor Center. We almost thought we got lost. And it is another 1.5 miles from the Visitor Center to the Memorial Plaza. So keep these distance in mind. So 3 main stops for Flight 93 Memorial: 1. Visitor Center. While groundbreaking for the memorial was in 2009, it wasn't until 2015 when the Visitor Center & Education Center was dedicated. Flight path is a big theme throughout. Even the walking path from the parking lot leading to the building is part of the flight path. It's free admission and has interactive multimedia exhibits accounting for the entire heart wrenching sequence of events. This including handsets which you can pickup to listen to the actual voice mails of the passengers calling their loved one during their final moments. After listening to one, I couldn't continue with the second. It's too much. 2. Memorial Plaza. On a good weather day, there are 2 trails you can hike directly from the visitor center, especially the trail that goes through the Memorial Grove and the 40 trees representing the people who were on Flight 93. Or you can drive to the Visitors Shelter parking lot and have a shorter walk. Here you can see the names of each of the 40 passengers and crews carved on the Wall of Names. You can also peek through the wooden gate for the rock that marks Flight 93's final resting place. 3. Tower of Voices. This last stop was the first to be completed and was dedicated on Sept 11 2011. This is the most iconic, short and easy access from the parking lot. It's really an amazing design, incorporating so many meaningful elements. For example, there are 40 wind chimes, representing the 40 voices; each chime tube is separated by a wing flap, etc. One can spend some time here admiring the structure and reflecting on the heroical tragedy. And if there happens to be a gusty wind greater than 12 mph, you might actually hear the chimes. We weren't so lucky. It was a very meaningful and sobering experience for sure. read more

I have never visited this site memorial before and all I can say is WOW. Listening to the recordings, viewing the site, doing the walk on the grounds and listening to the guide outside talk about the unspeakable act that occurred on 911 brought tears to my eyes, not to mention the voice recordings of the passengers inside the museum. We came by bike and there was plenty of parking and everyone was very accommodating. I would recommend going to visit this memorial site...it's very surreal. read more

September 22, 2025 Update now of any comments I have written, one thousand four hundred fourteen! My previous of this has twenty eight total USEFUL, FUNNY, COOL, votes! As say, this is a memorial museum! Admission is free! When we went, many Guests that by the time they leave, not one dry face, I saw every had tears in their eyes! There are docents throughout the memorial! When I was there, many told the docent their stories of their experiences of September 11, 2001 (Year Of The Snake)! Later was termed as words Nine Eleven! I told the docent my story, of how before the term Nine Eleven became the words, became the term, we at my Home Town Salvation Army signed up for special bell ringing for this tragedy! I have been watching many documentaries of Nine Eleven, some of the documentaries do mention of American Red Cross and do mention of Salvation Army, so then even if I never been to Empire State, that is New York, my story is true! There are names on the wall of the ones not just the four airplanes but also all the others that died from September 11, 2001! Outside are the names of the heroes of Flight 93! People do leave notes and other tributes next to the names! Indeed those on the four flights, crew members and passengers, are heroes! Memorial is very well done. You can choose to walk or you can choose to park near each of the places to visit. We went to the tower of voices first. The tower is really tall and has a wind chime for each of the victims. There does have to be a good breeze going to be able to hear it. It was pretty breezy when we were there and only one of the chimes actually rang but I was glad to be able to hear the one. The visitors center is where you can see the exhibits. They have things that they found at the crash site. Pretty crazy that anything was left. Todd Beamer's work badge is on display. There is also what remains of someone's drivers license. You can also hear a few of the voice mails left by some of the passengers. Very sad. You can walk out to where the flight path was and look out towards the actual crash site. You can't actually go out to it. Only family members are allowed. The remains that could not be identified are buried there. Do stop at the look out areas on the way to the memorial. You can see the town that the plane flew over and you can hear what the residents saw and heard that day. read more

The National Parks has done a phenomenal job memorializing this area and each of the passengers. In the visitor center you can listen to three final voice mail messages left to loved ones. I never thought I would be visiting here, but a road trip was bringing me through the area. I imagined that there would be something here. Perhaps a wall of names, which there is, in a field and that was about it. My first impression was the scale of the memorial. The place is huge and well-designed. I am not quite sure why the museum is up at the overlook. I would think it would be better placed below where the footpath is to the flight path and wall of names, but that is a minor complaint. There is no admission charge and plenty of parking. You could spend a long time here just walking the grounds taking in what happened that day. If you visit on a day with at least 12 to 15 mph winds I am sure the tower of voices would be even more amazing. I wondered who owned the land before it became a memorial and this is what I found online: Tim Lambert, weary from a long day of reporting on Sept. 11, 2001, checked his answering machine. There was a message from his father: "I've been watching the video all day and those trees are ours." Lambert stood, stunned by the realization that the Shanksville, Pa., woods he roamed as a child, with their majestic hills and tall hemlock trees, was now the crash site of United Flight 93. His family owned the land, and the question was what to do next... Well, what that land turned into is worth visiting even though it is for a tragic event. The location might be in the middle of nowhere, but that fact did not influence how it is remembered today with the memorial in place. A job well done. PRO TIP: If you actually want to check in here on Yelp, you will need to do it at the entrance to the address. A very morbid visit. A day that I remember exactly where I was, what I was doing and Flight 93 didn't happen that far from where the family was living at the time. The outside viewing of everything can be a bit unclear and uncomfortable if you don't look at the info panels laud out around the area. The inside of the visitor center has a lot of information and some physical artifacts from the plane. This was a very powerful and moving memorial to the heroes of Flight 93. We drove here on our way home from another location and it's really in the middle of nowhere - but very much worth the trip. I guess that was the point of bringing the plane down in this location. Even though there isn't much in the area it was amazing that when they brought this plane down - no one on the ground was killed. Truly remarkable. As I was walking through the memorial I was reliving so much of what I remembered from watching the news on 9/11/01 and even though I knew all the details it was still extremely shocking to re-live the newscasters on air broadcasts. I'm not really an emotional person but I teared up looking at the wall of people who lost their lives. You are able to click on each person and learn about them. They had a lot of facts and pictures. Interestingly, everyone on the plane was an adult. And they were from all over the place. I was only able to click a few people and then I needed to walk away bc it just made me so sad. The most moving part for me were these phones you could put up to your ear and hear the actual messages the heroes left loved ones on answering machines. Messages saying goodbye to loved ones because they knew they weren't going to survive. One woman left a message giving instructions to her family member on how to open her safe so they could access her valuables after her death. read more

Our approached to the park brought us past the Tower of Voices and we made this our first stop. Located away from the main site, it sits on a rise, surrounded by pines. The sculpture contains wind chimes of immense proportion that sing in a strong breeze. A sign nearby the sculpture offers a website and QR scan if it's a calm day and you'd like to hear the chimes. This is a lovely memorial. There is a fair sized parking area here. Drove on to the visitors center where a bigger parking lot and bus parking is located. A free standing building holds restrooms and a class room. At the time of our visit the building was closed and porta potties made available to guests. The visitor center is a brutalist building that looms to the left of the restroom building. It blocks the view to the site and has the intimidating appearance of an ominous defensive wall. Follow the pathway thru the gap and you will see the visitor center entrance. A viewing platform is to the right and required binoculars or a close-up camera lens to see the site from this distance. Inside the visitor center is a small gift shop and a heart breaking account of the events of the day and lives lost. There is also a small viewing platform inside at the far end. From here we drove down to Memorial Plaza which has a fair sized lot to park, and information boards retelling events of the day with some photos. In a small shelter you will find Nat'l Park Passport stamps (or you can buy the stickers in the gift shop at the visitor center) as well as borrow a wheel chair for use at the site. A wide, long pathway skirts the field to your left. There is no entry to the field and as you are level with the field there is not too much to see other than the large boulder placed to the back of the impact area. Many people have left mementos along the pathway including flowers, patches, candles, etc. There are seating areas all along the pathway. At the end of the walkway is a large gate that looks over the field in the direction of travel. A marble wall includes several panels, each inscribed with the name of a passenger or crew member on board, plus a few more. This is a very sober location to visit and a beautiful memorial. There are pathways to walk between sights if you prefer. There is no entrance fee and gift shop purchases help support the memorial. read more

This Memorial is decided to the dozens of people that lost their life on 9/11/2001. There is a visitors center, main memorial and a tower of whispers. The area is well kept and the set up is beautiful. The main memorial has a stone wall with each passenger and crew member listed. There are benches where there are 2 scheduled speakers (we did not catch it). You can see the boulder where the plane stopped in the field. I appreciate what these braves souls did for our country. Having lived through 9/11 as a Washingtonian, and having been to the memorial of the Twin Towers in New York (as well as having been up there when they were still standing), I was aware that this spot existed, but wasn't really sure it would be worth a visit. After all, this plane could hardly have crashed in a more anonymous place, and it is surely a set of fields that I would have driven by without a thought were it not a memorial. But having been there, the resonance of the experience was beyond what I'd expected. The area is a splendid countryside of rolling hills, and ample wildflowers graced the drive in. A visitor center offers a brief but fairly hard-hitting exhibition, but most of the experience is going to be outdoor walking. A path leads around the site and allows one to view the crash site from a distance. A boulder marks the exact location, near a wall with the names of the passengers. A tower purportedly offers some resonant sounds near the entrance, but I didn't hear any. Currently, you would think that a ludicrous recent attempt by protesters to storm the U.S. Capitol was a bigger deal than the possibility of the plane that crashed here completely destroying it. For all its intrinsic drama and power, the story of Flight 93 feels oddly undertold. I wonder if it's that people just don't want to screw it up. But between the site and the memorial built on top of it, one gets a sense of quintessential Americana. The landscape is so ordinary, and the people on the plane were equally ordinary travelers, and yet the surrounding events that occurred are transcendent because those people rose to the challenge of the moment. I probably spent close to two hours, and could have spent a bit longer if I didn't have travel plans. I think for anyone who is traveling and wondering whether it's worth making what is likely a substantial detour, my answer would be yes. read more

(This visit was made during the times of Covidious earlier this month. When things return to a look of normality - your experience likely will vary.) As long as you're above a certain age and haven't been living in an undisclosed location, there is no need for any kind of lengthy preamble as to what this place is all about. Let me start by mentioning that our visit was unique in that it was during the times of Covidious along with it snowing outside. When you put the two together it means no visitors center (closed-Covid), no overlook trail (closed-weather) and the actual Memorial Plaza walkway was pretty slick but what we gained was aside from two other cars, was total quiet with no one else being there. It also goes without saying that coming here is a bit of a hike as there is literally nothing else in the immediate vicinity. The memorial is off of route 30 and fairly close to 219 but even with that, there is zip in the area in terms of basics like gas or food (basic pit style bathrooms at the Memorial Plaza only) so plan accordingly. To me this memorial stands as a sad reminder for all of us about that day, now almost twenty years ago, when our country's seemingly impenetrable security blanket was broken. Everything here is well planned and very respectful. Very much a must visit. read more

What an awesome memorial for an incredibly radical group of individuals who stood up for what they believed in and stoped a group of terrorist jerks from killing even more innocent people! Coming here is something that I've wanted to do for many years as I've always had much respect for the people on this flight who took their own lives to save a bunch of others it was a very noble thing to do and they will not be forgotten for it! The bulk of this is a walkway that goes along the path of where the plane skidded in the debris field to where it came to an end where there is a listing of each individual on the plane who died saving another! One of the coolest parts of this memorial is the Tower Of Voices as it's a tall tower with a wind instrument for each person who lost their life it's really a cool structure but from what I found out on the day of my visit is that it's gotta be really windy to hear it like we had a slight breeze so it was silent but I looked up what the sound sounds like and it definitely sounded really cool! Overall this is an awesome memorial that celebrates a bunch of heroes who did more than their fair share to save the lives of countless others much love and respect to all of you and may you Rest In Peace! read more

Stopped here on the weekend of Sept 11, and as a first time guest had to wade through all the options of where to go and what to see. We started with the overlook and indoor museum. There was a short wait to go inside, and due to COVID we thought you could go back to the store after but that wasn't the case. The setup and presentation was very well done, and the architecture and design was impressive. We then drove down to the Memorial Plaza and the wall of names, and after the President was there that week, there were bouquets around. On our way out we stopped at the tower of voices which I didn't quite understand and there wasn't much signage to explain when it makes sound or how. Glad we went.
