Great atmosphere and friendly staff greeting you the moment you walk in. The place is huge! The booths are comfortably sized for about 3-4 people and it's a fun vantage point to people watch the bar area. Paul made our visit so much more enjoyable. He was friendly, helpful, and gave us great recommendations. The cocktails were excellent. We ordered the Andariega and several Mariachi Old Fashioned cocktails. I ordered the shrimp fajitas -- loved them! The tortillas were small but withstood the weight of the shrimp, sizzling strips of peppers, and even some beans and rice. I'd order them again! For dessert we had the churros and the best carajillo cocktail. This is a fun place for a date - great food and drinks and super friendly people. read more

This 630pm rush - I believed is not good - the water service was late and the pitcher was asked twice to be replaced as it has food stained stuck inside. Came back, and definitely everything was great, from the minute we got there, hostess really nice and friendly. We made a reservation so we did not wait for table. Waiter super polite, well knowledge of the menu; food and drinks. He made recommendations as we explained what we were looking for! After eating at Flores several times in both small and group settings over the past year, I can say that I'm a fan. Some of my favorite dishes are their crispy chicken tacos, Chilequiles, and chips and salsa. The restaurant itself is comfortable with a variety of seating. Tables are spaced out well and it doesn't feel overly crowded. Reservations are easy to come by and would recommend them for larger groups. Pros: the menu has a good variety of options and the bar and restaurant area are comfortable. Cons: parking on this side of the mall can be difficult during peak hours and the weekend. read more

I went to Flores in San Mateo for happy hour and it was a really good time. When we first arrived, it was pretty empty, but around 5 PM it started to pick up with a lot more people. We sat outside on the patio and ordered happy hour margaritas along with a couple of appetizers. The menu had really good prices overall. The margaritas were great, and what was on the menu was pretty good. The meat was really tender. However, the flautas left me wanting more and were a little underwhelming. Having been to the San Francisco location on Union Street, I was really surprised to not see a single taco on the happy hour menu. I definitely think that if they put tacos on the HH menu, the restaurant would be a little bit busier. Our server was phenomenal. He was awesome and never made us feel like we were forgotten. He was very attentive, prompt, personable, and patient with us as we took our time ordering and ordered several rounds of margaritas. I came here with my husband and my extended family, a total of 11 of us. One of my aunt's recommended this place. It's accommodating for large groups so it's a nice place to huge families to get together. We were sat at a long table next to what I think was a 1-year-old's birthday party. Unfortunately, there was a lot of screaming from that room and there was a very underutilized sliding door that was kept open for the entire restaurant to hear. They closed the door after the screaming perpetrator had already left which sort of defeated the purpose. But I'm digressing. To be honest, there wasn't a lot of this menu that I wanted to eat. I think it was mostly brunch food and I'm not a huge fan of brunch food. I settled on the huervos rancheros which was decently flavorful. I think my husband got a burrito (as he always does), and a few people got the same pork bowl and complimented the tenderness of the pork as well as the crispiness so I think the pork bowl was a huge hit. It's a good restaurant, in the Hillsdale Mall, but it's not really a place I need to return to. Service was good, food was decent albeit a bit pricey and it seems to be a good spot for private parties. Just utilize the sliding door. It's there for a reason. read more

Kids burrito with choice of meat is a pretty solid meal option. Good size and comes with chips. The kids bowl is a bit disappointing on the other hand. Nothing much to say about it. Overall a bit bland and no salsa on the side. Not sure how the kids quesadilla is. Protein-wise, the steak was a bit bland, but tender and meaty. Pretty good amount in the burrito. The chicken was very good, juicy and with cooked onions. Pretty tasty. The carnitas was disappointing and dry. A bit of a letdown. We really enjoyed our food here at Flores. This is located across from Lululemon/Pinstripes outside Hillsdale Mall. We were given free pinwheel chips (chicharrones de harina) as soon as we sat down. We ordered the appetizer Guacamole $13 and it came with chips on top of a bed of guacamole and 3 house salsas. The guac was pretty good and we liked the chipotle and lime salsas. We ordered the Mixta plate $54 (recommended for 2 people) to share and it comes with the 3 proteins: beef bavette (flap) steak, grilled shrimp and chicken along with black beans, rice and 3 tortillas. I found the flap steak bland but the shrimp and chicken were flavorful. What really surprised me was that the chicken that looks really charred was still moist and good. I'm not usually a fan of peppers but the poblano peppers were tasty and I liked it a lot. It was plenty of food and I think just the right amount for us without leftovers. You can ask for more tortillas with the Mixta, I'm guessing they only give you 3 at a time to minimize waste. read more

This is my second time coming here, and overall it's a great place! The food has been consistently good. I got the trio tacos. The fish taco is always my favorite. However, this time around it seemed a little spicier than usual. I actually was not able to finish my third taco because it was pretty spicy. The elote is my absolute favorite part. It's delicious and I love eating it with my chips. The ambience is beautiful! It's perfect for big groups. They also have a separate room for private parties. They are very accommodating with making sure they can have a table for me and my group of friends. The service was good. The first time around our waiter was superrrr friendly. First off, Anthony my server was GREAT! He is one of two reasons why I'm giving three stars. I entered as a first timer with no acknowledgement from the host. Not a I'll be right back, not a hi welcome, let me take care of them and I will be with you. NOTHING, but when Anthony saw me with hesitation he took a chance and gave me great service. Now I ordered the HH Jaibol Citus aka a gin and soda. It's was giving flat and watery. Then I ordered HH nachos with asada. Now it was large was not expecting that for HH. It barely had melted cheese, lots of chips and decent asada. I also ordered a HH margarita. It gave watery, never try again. Last and final I ordered the churros. We have a winner baby. Wrapped up DS's graduation and skipped the Berkeley chaos by trying a new spot closer to home. Got there at 2pm which is past lunch rush. The place is half-full still. Started with guac. Hubby aimed for chicken mole--denied (dinner only). Tried to order the tuna tostada, but server warned it was more "snack" than "lunch," so he pivoted to enchiladas and gave them a 4/5. DS got six tacos. The grilled fish was the winner. His GF and I got carne asada bowls: steak was tough and chewy, a generous 3/5. Younger DS had the huarache which is also 3/5. Bill came to $175 after tax and tip, that's $35/person, no drinks, just food. For that price, we expected better. Servers were lovely, but food not so much. Probably won't return. read more

The chicken and beef in the mixta are also pretty tender and juicy. Although I feel mixta is a bit overpriced, with portion barely enough for one male and one female. Our group was seated in the far corner and our waitress forgot about us. After another waiter dropped off our mains we didn't see our waitress for over 30 minutes. No one checked on us and after we flagged someone down it still took a while to get our check. Speaking of check, they charge a 4% employee benefits tax. Just raise the prices instead! Chips and salsa trio were nice, but not complimentary. Chicken fajitas and enchiladas were just ok. They were both under seasoned. Fajitas come with a nicely sized serving of meat. Can't say if this was caused by Flores but one person in our party got food poisoning later in the evening after eating here. All in all, I would look elsewhere for Mexican food in the Hillsdale area. read more

This is the second time I've eaten at this restaurant and this time was a lot better than the first. I ordered the Pescado a la Veracruzana. It was a pretty good serving and tasted amazing! The sauce was so good, I tried some of my friend's tacos and dipped it in this sauce. We also ordered a side of platanos and churros. So good! The Pescado definitely made the meal. Flores is a more upscale Latin restaurant located on the outer edge of the Hillsdale mall complex (not inside the mall). Parking is in the mall structure right across the street which makes it easy to access. The interior is modern and sexy with a good sized outdoor dining area as well. The service was good and attentive throughout the evening. Even the manager came around to check in with the outside tables which I like. The menu has a good variety of Latin dishes that also includes some vegetarian options. We started with the Sikil Pak appetizer - mayan pumpkin seed hummus with spiced jicama slices, and for some reason small lettuces (menu says lettuce wraps)... we found the lettuce part to be useless. But, the spiced jicama with the hummus was light and tasty. We both then ordered the mole poblano with chicken - a leg quarter with rice and a flavorful mole to work with. I have had better mole in my life experiences, but this was very good. Nice spiciness and the chicken was tender. Overall, a good meal for both of us on a Sunday evening. read more

The only thing I have not been a fan of is their quesabrilla tacos. I don't think mine actually had any cheese and they were very floppy. Very nice for San Mateo, cute & trendy atmosphere. Service has been spotty. Sometimes it's great and other times you wait forever to be checked on, the bill to be brought, etc. Warning because I know this is a turn off for some: they charge for chips & salsa. We visited on Cinco de Mayo and unfortunately had one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. The restaurant wasn't overly busy, so the service delays were hard to understand. It took over an hour just to receive two appetizers. The drinks were very disappointing--small, weak, and lacked both flavor and alcohol. We ordered a pitcher, but it only poured about three small rock glasses. We ordered another round and received the same tiny portions. What was most frustrating was that our waitress never returned to take our entrée order. After waiting 45 minutes, I had to track her down myself to ask about our second appetizer, and she casually said, "Oh, they're making it now." By that point, our bill was nearly $200 and we hadn't even had a chance to order an entrée. We ultimately decided to leave. Very disappointing experience, and unfortunately we won't be returning. read more

Great happy hour experience! Lots of (veggie-friendly) options for reasonable prices, and delicious food! I recommend the guacamole. I also got the sopes de frijol, but I was too full to finish! 6/16/24 After attending the yelp event that Flores hosted, I really wanted to take my fiancée here since he loves Hispanic cuisine. Flores San Mateo is located at Hillsdale Mall. With patience, You can find parking in the parking lots. We opted for outdoor seating since we had our fur baby with us too. I guess when you sit outside, you can only place your order through the QR code that is provided on the table. Here's what we got: - guac and chips (to share) - carne asada bowl (mine) - oxaca cheese (to share) - enchiladas (his) The guac was really good and the chips were sturdy and crunchy. The oxaca cheese dip was super cheesy and actually very filling that we were almost full by the time our entrees came. The carne asada bowl is a well proportioned meal of meat, salad and beans. Zach said that he enjoyed the enchiladas but we took half of it home since he was pretty full from the appetizers. Overall, everything we got tasted great. Flores is a bit on the pricier side, but you can tell that the ingredients are fresh and of high quality. Would return for more delicious food! read more

We had a nice family lunch here at Flores. I decided to get a small ensalada verde with queso fundido. My husband got a trio of tacos with different proteins - carnitas, carne asada, and chicken. For the kids, we split a carne asada burrito as our server advised that the portion was sizable. Our food was delicious - I think my salad was a bit on the simple side but it was light, crisp, and refreshing and left me room to fill up on the creamy, gooey queso mushroom dip that comes with 4 warm corn tortillas on the side. My husband thought his tacos were fantastic with his favorite protein being the carnitas. My kids scarfed down their burrito and the server was correct in that it was the right amount for the both of them to share, paired with a side of freshly fried tortillas chips. We were seated in a sizable U-shaped booth across from the bar so could watch the bartenders make the unique looking cocktails that they serve here. read more

We wanted to like this restaurant. The pitcher of margaritas came out almost entirely ice. This was our first time here, and when we asked the waiter to remove some of the ice and refill it with actual margarita, he brought it back only halfway full without adding anything. None of us even got a full glass, and he didn't acknowledge our concern or make any effort to be accommodating. Then a $7.00 service fee was added. The waiter never came and ask us if everything was ok! If the service had been better and he had simply acknowledged our concern, this would be a different story. We will not return. read more

Recently had an event in their PDR here and it is definitely a solid choice for a gathering of up to 25-30 people. We selected several items off the brunch menu including the ensalada, huevos, hamachi tostadas, flautas, chips and guac and of course fresh churros for dessert. Food was plentiful and flavorful. Chips are such a standout with the guac along with the hamachi tostadas. Flautas were good but a bit heavy and also half of it had their spicy salsa on it so be warned! Huevos were good but probably would skip next time. Loved the carne asada tacos! And the churros were awesome. Caesar the manager on duty was so helpful and his team really made the event such a success! Parking is about a 3 minute walk from the Hillsdale garage. read more

After eating one I ordered 2 more. Cooked well lots of flavor and not too chewy. The pickled carrots and onions on the side was a nice touch. The star was the salsa. Not too hot. A delicious Mexican restaurant that specializes in tacos! Though the soft tacos tasted a tad bit powdery, the meats and other dishes more than made up for it. The queso fundido is a must get! Very cheese flavours with mushrooms that go extremely well with the tacos. Was considering getting a second serving! We also got the parrilada so share between the two of us. The dish was presented beautifully, and the flavours intense and great! You really have to pair it with the tacos though, otherwise each item may be a bit too salty.
