This airport is fairly convenient, but it's really small and cramped. It reminds me of LGA in NYC. I was flying internationally and I had an easy time checking in and getting to my gate but again, it's really tight and crowded with not enough seating at the gates. I will say that it's very easy to get to by bus. There are several options and I was there from the Berlin Hilton via the U6 and 128 bus in under 35 minutes! It seems that Berlin would have a world class airport because it's such a world class city, but this doesn't really come close. From talking to friends in Berlin, I understand the topic of airports in Berlin is fraught with a lot more than economics when thinking about Tempelhof, Tegel, Schönefeld, and (maybe someday) Brandenburg. But everyone should come to Berlin and this is one good way to get there! read more

Departure: - If you're flying internationally (my case to Newark via United at Gate A00) your bag check & ticket check area is your gate, so once you check in you are STUCK and advised not to leave. - I was not even allowed to use the lounge as their is no access once you've checked in ok, ok I know, woe is me, first world problems, but kind of a big deal if youre used to other systems when traveling. - there is no good food at the gate (A00), just vending machines and one sad and overpriced food stand selling pretzels and cheap expensive coffee. This is place is the equivalent terminal A at Newark, but no food, but seemingly ample amounts of charging stations. - the worst is what is a 300 or so passenger plane, has a gate that is equipped with a single person bathroom male/female stalls. read more

I don't know if I love or hate this airport. It's def in need of a massive modernization that is for sure. Arrivals: It was the quickest arrival process from arriving from overseas which I absolutely loved and I was quickly into the city of Berlin shortly afterwards. Departures: Departing Tegal you should really wait last minute to check in because once you pass security you just stuck in a really run down terminal waiting room with literally one crappy cafe and a bathroom which is probably actually smaller than your airplanes bathroom. The waiting room to board after security can barely fit everyone who's going to get into the plane as well. Prior to Check In: They do have an onsite postoffice, and you can do your tax refund quite easily there, so that is better than other international airports I been too. And naturally they have a small shopping mall to entertain yourself before checkin into your holding pen I mean secured waiting area back to the States. We got in TXL from Munich and was surprised that the luggage conveyer belt was right at the gate. I had to admit that was efficient to be able to pick up your checked bag right after disembarking. The walk out to the taxi line was immediate. It had a totally different experience than that of the Munich Airport. Nevertheless, despite the super efficient design by those smart engineers, it is just not hitting the mark from user friendliness perspective. The whole place was ran down as well. I never imaged I would be flying out of a smaller, crappier airport from a developed country like Germany than any developing country I've been to in the Caribbean like Mexico. There is no rhyme or reason to the way this airport is organized. Security for each gate is behind the check in counter. You cannot go through security until they open it for you gate; in our case it was 7:40am for a 9:40am flight. There is nothing behind security, only minimal seating. There is no reason to go to the gate early and once you're through security there is nothing to do. At the gate they asked a lot of questions. She asked us if we had any prohibited items in carry on, if we packed our bags ourselves and if we had them in our possession the whole time. She asked us which bags belonged to who. Then she started asking where we had been staying. Now it was getting stupid after that and for some stupid reason she needed all 3 of us to answer even though I explained to her that I had made all the booking and travel arrangements and was the one who always ordered a taxi. My travel partners had no idea about the exact hotel name. When she asked them about the surroundings of the hotel, there was nothing to answer since we had stayed in the middle of nowhere, by the water. So she started asking stupid questions - what was near the hotel? (Water, suburbs) What did we see? (We took a tour to the Reichstag) Did we like it? (Sure) What did we like about it? (It was cool?) What are these stupid questions and what is the point of them? Will they not let me leave if I didn't like Germany? What if I didn't speak English to answer her completely stupid and unnecessary questions? Customs agent was rude too and threw my envelope back at me so I could remove the receipts from it because he was too angry and lazy to open up an envelope and remove two sheets of paper. He then tossed said receipts back at me. Someone is grumpy at 7am... Security moved at a snails pace. They kept stopping families with extra screening. God forbid someone's child smuggled in a lollipop. They asked us all the same stupid questions at security. And they discriminate against Russian speakers. The moment they heard us speaking Russian the gate check agent whispered something to the officer and then the offer whispered something to the X-ray tech. Then they made us take off flip flops and went through our bags when we had no large liquids or dangerous items. Where exactly are we supposed to hide something in flip flops? Before you go to Tegel you need to know that it is a holdover from the cold war. It is a very small airport. It also doesn't have a traditional structure where you go from a main reception area, through security, into the terminals. Instead every single gate has its own mini security area and mini lounge. As a result where there is a large flight, the line spills over and backs up to the general area of the airport. This leads to a general inconvenience navigating and also very long waits to get through security into your small waiting area. Once through security you also are stuck at the small waiting area for that specific gate. It is a pain. Flying from Berlin to Frankfort (and then on to Seattle) my wife and I had no problems. At the same time our friends were going from Berlin to Dublin (then Chicago). It took them over an hour to get through the security check. There aren't many good alternatives to flying into and out of Berlin, just be ready for a subpar experience. Pack a book, music on your phone, and a snack. read more

Berlin Tegel is an Airport that simple is to small for what it tries to deliver. It certainly has its strange 80s Charme but it lags a lot that you would expect from a propper international airport, this combined with the typical "friendliness" of the Berlin people gives is a certain vibe. Tegel although not enormous has it's Berlin charm. It is much better than the Schoenberg airport in Berlin. The cafés are fine and you have descent airport amenities. It is easy to get in and out and is located where the first jet engine laboratory in the world once stood. read more

This was the first time I've flow out of this airport and compared to Munich and Frankfurt this place is tiny. As others have mentioned no need to arrive super early. We made that mistake and it was too early for us to check in and the security line only opened about 5 minutes after we checked in. The airport is pretty efficient though the day we flew out there was a fair amount of fog but we were only minimally delayed. There are some places to eat before you go through security but I'd advise eating if you're hungry before you go through security otherwise your options are super limited. Also as I learned the hard way after walking around the airport to find the WC (bathroom) look up as there are directional signs above your head. Still a pretty decent airport as its rather efficient which is a plus and you don't have to do heaps of walking either as compared to other European airports. read more

It is surprising that a city like Berlin has such a small and outdated airport. It was definitely the opposite of state of the art! Despite what some people say about arriving early, it's pointless because you can't go through security and customs until your plane is closer to leaving time. I was flying AirBerlin to the US on business class so right past security I had access to the lounge, which was nice, because there isn't a whole lot of seating by the gates, it's just a big room with the capacity of probably 2 plane loads of people. There were about 8 gates past the security and customs line that I went through. I thought security was fast, but I had the fast lane access that directed you straight thru the metal detector. In the regular line they have one of the millimeter wave body scanners. The metal detector was beeping often so the agents were using the hand wand to check people out. About every 3rd person had to stand there for an extra screening. But even so, we were through the line in about 10 minutes. read more

When EasyJet switched my outbound flight from Schönefeld to Tegel a few weeks after I purchased the ticket I was pretty mad, but this airport turned out to be alright after all. There's not a train line that gets to Tegel, but there is a bus route which happened to be delayed that day. We opted to take a taxi which was €30 from the Alexanderplatz area. The ride took about 40 minutes in pretty heavy traffic. It was pretty crowded when we arrived but the check-in and luggage lines moved fast. The security lines were a bit slower but we were still through security in less than 30 minutes. I found all of the security agents to be friendly. Food and seating were scarce after security (basically just a snack bar) so I was glad we had access to the lounge via Priority Pass and we were able to fill up on food/drink and charge our devices while avoiding the crowds. When we got to the gate it was unusually warm in there so we were even more grateful for the lounge. The duty free area is actually pretty large and I scooped up some make-up while there. I wouldn't mind flying in and out of here again. read more

Those waiting to be welcomed in the capital of the most awesome city in Deutschland will be confronted with a dilapidated, sad and miserable airport. I kid you not. Even though Tegel is located in the city of Berlin, getting out of here and into town will require some pre-planning ahead. In advance, you should figure out which bus route you should take to your hotel or end destination. There aren't any direct S or U bahn connections from here. (wow, even BART has direct connections from SFO to the city of SF!) you have to take the bus to the train stations. Or take a taxi into the city center which will cost between 20 euro or so. Plan to hang out here for awhile if you arrive super early for your flight. The place is aging (and not like fine wine either!) and inside looks like a strip mall with a few shops and some very sorry food options. Starbucks will be your redeeming choice. (I mean, seriously) Security is RIGHT there. If you don't need to check in a luggage, don't arrive at the airport 3 hours early because even if you do, the staff will not let you check in your luggage until it's 1.25 hours your flight time. Waiting area after clearing security isn't large. Clearly, the demand of travelers flying into and out of Tegel has grown in the last decade. You want to fly into Schoenefeld? it's further from the city center, but should be worth the headache of taking the train in. Worst of all, NO FREE WIFI. WTF. I only fly through here coz I'm FORCED to fly Air Berlin. Did I mention, NO FREE WIFI?!?! read more

Seriously, Berlin? Is this really your main airport? I had flown into Schoenefeld with Easyjet and it had the size and ambiance of a budget airline terminal though with excellent and swift train and S-Bahn connections into town I was expecting Tegel to be a step up in quality as it is Berlin's main airport. There's no train service to the airport though the X9 express bus service that I caught from Zoologischer Garten station proved to be frequent and fast However, the airport itself proved to be rather more chaotic. Flight departures seemed to be a bit random - my airline Air Berlin flew out of several terminals and there was a slight moment of panic when I couldn't find my flight on the departures board. Bizarrely, there is only one board with all the flight details for all the terminals on it. The other boards only have some of the flights on them The main building houses terminals A and B, which also has the best selection of food and shops though the selection is quite limited. I had quite a nice meal at Marche but that's virtually the only reasonably priced option My flight departed from terminal D, which is a truly depressing box of a building which looks like a warehouse on the inside. Truly functional in appearance and ambiance, it didn't help my humour when my flight delay meant that I had to spend even longer there Berlin is a great city and it deserves a better main airport. I've flown into Frankfurt airport many times and am impressed with its size, efficiency, great services and variety of food providers. It's a huge airport where you can buy lunch to Gucci, to duty free. Why you can buy a car at the Frankfurt airport, LOL. Enter Berlin. The Berlin (TXL) airport by comparison is small, cramped and caught in a 60's time warp.. You're lucky if you find a food stand. Once you step off the plane, German customs agents are right outside the gate and you feel that any moment now they're gonna go through your luggage to look for contraband whilst James Bond walks by with his hot blond trophy through customs unchecked. But overall this airport is totally efficient at least with my arrival and departure experiences. Baggage Delivery: We waited for 20 minutes for our luggage, very odd considering the plane was right outside the gate. But out came my luggage, the customs agents gave me once over and waved me by. Shoot, I wanted this huge political incident maybe hoping for too much. Checkin: On my return, it was also super efficient. My cabbie, parked on the outskirts of the airport and turned to a large board lit with arrivals and departure information. You have to do this as terminals are not Airline specific, you have to know from which gate your flight is departing. Weird, trippy but hey, everything worked like clockwork, no delays, no hassle just quick efficient processing. For an old airport stuck in a time warp, no major complaints outside of no power plugs for laptops and security runs a handheld scanner all over you and in between your legs, LOL. Dem kinky Germans. Visits: 2 Tip: There are ATMs everywhere. Don't buy Euros from US banks, they rip you off. You can get Euros using your ATM card, very efficient, very quick and safe, exchange rate is current. We had the most unfortunate experience at this airport. First, it took forever to get our luggage. Second, when I got my luggage, the handle was broken. Third, there's no wifi. Fourth, this airport is small, dinky and dirty. Fifth and worst of all, my sister and I got singled out and stopped by an old security person before exiting the baggage claim area. Granted we were the only non-Aryan looking people in the entire airport. We must look suspicious and dangerous. I wonder if the guy knows WWI has been over for years. What is there to say? A relic of another time when Berlin was still divided - the West Berlin airport was not part of the relaunch of the city after the wall fell. But as the project new airport became a nightmare this little West Berlin airport had to step in. It's operating way beyond its capacity and has not seen any investment lately. So be prepared to travel to the past when disembarking here. The nice thing is that in the old days some things were actually pretty convenient - decentralized baggage claim, short distances and security at each gate - the obvious advantage: you can be there 45 min before departure and you're fine. The airport has a retro feeling and despite all the hassle of no space and ancient facilities - it does have some character: a leysieffer cafe, local shops that you would not expect to find in an international airport. The disadvantage: it's still a provincial airport that is far from being a hub - meaning you have to connect to other cities in Germany or Europe for most international flights. Another annoying detail is the long and complicated commute into town - no Sbahn or metro connecting the airport and the city. read more

I landed at Tegel last year from Amsterdam on KLM. I was surprised how small this place turned seemed to be. The Terminal I arrived at reminded me of Des Moines Iowa, except with more basic baggage claim and other facilities. The upside of this modest facility (and not too much traffic) was that I had my bag and was out at the curb is no time. There's also no real transportation infrastructure here (e.g. train), unless you count the express bus. However, cabs were easy to hail and I had a nice conversation with an Iranian driver all the way down to the Hotel. I didn't book to fly back out of Tegel, so I can't speak to that side of the airport experience. read more

Tiny airport for a big city. I flew in from LAX to Frankfurt to TXL on Luftansa. My boyfriend and I had to store our luggage on a different part of the plane, so we chose to wait until everyone got off before getting our carry on luggage. As we disembarked, I thought it was odd that I could still hear talking. Maybe its people waiting in the terminal to board the next plane? No, it was people waiting to claim their check luggage!! Unlike many bigger airports, the claim luggage is just steps from the gate. It took a while to get our luggage, we found the exit, and found an Information Kiosk to get tourist tickets for the museum and public transportation. After getting our tourist tickets, we found the island for the taxi, and took it to our hotel. Very simple, very small, and easy. There's cash machines located near the information kiosk, and snack places to get a drink or food. I do not think they're free wifi but I wasn't there long enough to find out. read more

This is a huge airport but feels less organized and in need of updating than many other airports in the country. The best thing about this airport is that you can get to your gate and check in and be at your gate in no time. The drawback is that once you clear security you have one cafe and one shop to choose from and nothing more. It's an airport in need of renovation and I believe some of it is planned in the near future. It's not a simple airport to navigate if you don't know where you are going. I have flown in here without problem on a few occasions but it still surprises me how long you end up waiting for security clearance even though there is only one or two flights at each gate. read more

Berliners should be ashamed to have an airport in the state of disrepair that Tegel is in. I realize that it isn't Berlin's primary airport, but due to all of the non-Lufthansa carriers going to Berlin these days, Tegel sees a sufficiently large volume of traffic to justify the investment of hosting an airport with all of the modern conveniences. Confusing signs, incomplete terminal maps, unclear navigational aids, and insufficient elevators/ramps make this airport a very challenging one to traverse if you happen to be walking with any luggage (although, if you are hands-free you may appreciate the many opportunities to get some exercise in walking the angular corridors and many staircases). I visited Berlin, flying into and out of Tegel, back in 2006 and was willing to concede a lot of latitude because I was told that the airport was undergoing a renovation and remodeling at that time. Fast forward 8 years and I think it is still in the same condition as then and perhaps worse. Dining options are sparse and I was completely astounded at the near complete lack of trash receptacles throughout the airport. There is the very occasional cylindrical garbage/recycle bin but nearly every one I saw was full already because they are so small (maybe 8-9 inches in diameter and 3 feet tall). Disappointing enough that I would recommend folks avoid Tegel if possible when you visit Berlin and, certainly, avoid transiting Tegel if you are en route to another destination. read more

This airport is located only 9 kilometers away from Berlin's inner city. It may be a small airport and a bit basic but is amazingly efficient in almost all aspects. Check in, bage drop and security checks etc are swift. When you arrive from an incoming flight change is that your suitcase is already on the conveyor belt before you even get there. Good public transportation to and beyond Berlin. However if you are a departing passenger and your flight is late you will be bored rather quickly since the shopping area is rather small and places to have drinks and snacks limited. This problem would be non existing should airlines be as efficiant as Tegel Airport. read more

As of late, it seems as though I'm at Tegel every week or two. So it's safe to say that we're pretty familiar with one another. For an airport in Berlin, it's surprisingly small, but like most things German, it's also efficient, aka it gets the job done. I've only flown into Tegel, on the day I moved to Germany. The rest of my trips have been to pick up visiting or returning friends. Come summer, it will be gone, but I'll be squeezing in a round-trip flight before then, giving me a chance to fully absorb everything this airport has to offer (ha). The nice thing is that there is constantly arriving/departing bus service here that gets you wherever you want to go pretty fast. And most every time I've been here, there's always a public transportation guy who hangs out at the ticket machine and helps visitors decide what ticket to buy and does it for them, which presumably saves time and confusion on all parts. So that's pretty cool. read more

The worst and weirdest airport I've been to. Why does it look like an old airport for a big city such as Berlin? I was flying in from Copenhagen and connecting to another flight to Zurich. For some odd reason I had to walk outside of my terminal to another terminal where my flight was. And once I got to the terminal, I had to go through security again at my gate. Confusing much? I was also here again flying back to Copenhagen, and dropping off my baggage took forever since there was one person working at the SAS counter. Berlin Tegel is a small airport with a simple layout for Terminal A. It is roughly circular with a single walkway and hallways to the other terminals. There isn't much to do beyond some basic shopping. There are a handful of places to eat. There is an upper level with additional options, but I didn't go to that level. I departed and arrived by taxi. There is a taxi stand that is well marked and plenty of cabs. When arriving, you **must** get your luggage at a belt inside the arrival gate. The exit through security is immediately after this room, so don't leave without your bags. When it is time to leave Berlin, your security line will be based on your gate (e.g. Gates 2 and 3 have a line). The lines at each pair of gates were small and moved quickly. Once through, the waiting areas are very spartan and fairly small. There are chairs, a duty free shop, and a small place to eat. There is a second level with additional seating. The lower level of my gate did not have outlets, although a sign implied that the upper level did. read more

It was really weird but some how convenient, since nothing really far away, it is quite efficient in the way, it doesn't take so long to check-in/ out. Beside the size of this airport, there are still other problems there as well. For example, it's quite boring when you waiting to get on board, no TVs, no background music and so on. The duty free shops aren't so big, and seem lack of options. Well, it's just hard for me to imagine this is an airport for international flights. I heard that they actually working on a "new " airport, which the project already took ages. Somehow it seem to have always some problems during the construction, so until now that airport yet be opened. Even though, I still hope they could open it one day. read more

Back again at what is one of my last favorite airports. Arrived from New York on United and my bag made it, so that's good. Connecting to Madrid on Iberia... let's hope they don't lose it now. Of course I'm flying out of a different terminal than where the Oneworld Lounge (BA) is. It's hardly even a lounge with little food and no showers. Security was awful... no line but they decided to take every single thing out of my backpack and were being impolite during the process, implying that I have a disorganized backpack. I didn't get a chance to look through her own purse to critique it. Hurried to my gate to find boarding hadn't started on time. Surprise surprise. 15 minutes after scheduled boarding and no news from staff. Everyone just huddled by the door like sheep. No worries... I can go enjoy the terminal. Let's see, what's here? A bathroom, a coffee stand, and duty free. That's it. I couldn't even find a drinking fountain to have some water while I wait in the muggy terminal. Is this Germany? God dammit I hate this airport. read more
