There is a saying when one travels, when you need a place to eat then look for where the locals congregate. For example in Mexico; the place to eat was always the busiest taco stand. Here in Calgary go to where the truckers go, and so that is exactly what my friends and I did. The Flying J Truck stop, and its restaurant "The Country Market" caters to the hard working distant driving trucker who wants a piece of sanity and delicious home cooking while on the road. Here everything is made from scratch and is made in large trucker man portions to fill the appetite. The buffet is always a popular item, for $15.99 you can get your pickings of pizza, wings, fried chicken, chips etc. I decided on the fish and chips platter, with one of the best side of coleslaws this Saskatchewan girl has ever tasted, my friend was enjoying her roast dip and the other two were getting down with their bottomless plate buffets. Coffee and pop is bottomless as well here but the piece de resistance is the home made banana cream pie, I will drive to this out of the city limits location just for the pie and you should too. The management must have changed. Go there quite often and the last few months have been disappointed in one way or another. It appears that the staffing level has been cut in half. If you like a choice in coffee this place used to be good. Either there is no coffee no choice of coffee's or no coffee supplies such as 2% or cream. It gives the feel that management ignoring the coffee area to save money, maybe force you over to the cooler section instead. Like a different management philosophy of squeezing ever last penny out of the staff and making more profits for management bonuses. Last point is the the disgusting nozzles on the fountain drinks, absolutely gross. read more

I was first acquainted with the Flying J as it is right next to my Fiance's office, and he bought us both a pair of aviator sunglasses here for our road trip. Me: Where did you get these fantastic sun glasses? *cool pose in mirror* Him: The Flying J Me: Whaaaaaaaa? *look of confusion* Him: it's a truck stop, they were only 15 bucks! Me: *look of confusion continues* So after finally visiting the Flying J, I discovered they have pretty much everything you could need to fuel up your semi, give birth in the backseat of a Prius, sugar coat your stomach lining or get a pretty decent lunch. Their pizza is surprisingly good! You can also buy "tech" gear here, so if you are about to beat your husband cause he forgot to pack your bluetooth headset. HAVE NO FEAR. They sell them here. But then you'll remember you look stupid with a bluetooth on people think you are schizophrenic when you talk to Cindy in the middle of an HMV, but that's another issue. Gas up! Fuel up! Stock up! I work in the area and avoid doing business here that requires me to go inside. Getting gas at the gas bar where I can pay at the pump is fine and sometimes they have good prices on gas. However Service inside I find chaotic, confusing and very slow, even when it appears to be not busy. Today I bought smokes I wanted to tell the clerk, " What's with the attitude?" I mean if you don't like your job please quit or Flying J, pay them better. I really felt he was bothered helping me. Many but not all associates I have delt with have little or no service skills and could try harder on being more friendly and intuitive to customers. I've had to many ugly experiences to give them my business any longer.. read more

Avoid at all costs. Have had my debit card skimmed twice at this location, the card readers on the pumps more often than not are not working, coffee always out or tasting burnt/old, and thepeople behind the counter seem untrained/slow/confused. read more

"delicious home cooking"? Only if overcooked is rated as delicious! My husband & I live in Calgary, and decided to go to the Flying J for dinner. He had a hot hamburger sandwich, and I had Terriyaki Chicken. Now, the chicken was skin-less, but was cooked so badly it had developed a "skin" and was chewy. I waited through my husband having his meal and the waitress never returned until he'd long finished his meal. By that time I'd finished the French fries, and only had 1/5 of the chicken (enough to know it was badly cooked). When the waitress cleared our plates I told her the chicken was stringy and chewy. She mentioned it to the chef, and he offered to make me another. As we don't "eat in shifts" and my husband had finished his, I said "no thank you". The cook came to our table and I couldn't understand much of what he said except for "soft........ I'm so sorry". He picked at the chicken and it was shredded. I really didn't understand what he was saying, and didn't want to over-react but it sounded like he was arguing with me. I was on the point of saying "are you calling me a liar?" but as I wasn't sure what he was saying, I didn't want to push the point. They charged us for both meals, even though it was obvious I had hardly touched mine. They did not offer anything else. I tried to refuse to pay, but my husband said "let's just pay, but we won't return!" I told the waitress we live in Calgary, so it's not as if we were just passing through. read more

Flying J has the worst customer service ever. Just spoke with Norm the manger and he was very arrogant. I have a CB radio that was purchased from his store as a gift for my 16 year old. The purchase was made made by his Uncle who lives in Fort Mac who has misplaced the receipt BUT he has his bank statement showing it was purchased there. Imagine this not being good enough for Norm to take back. We do not even want the money just would like to exchange. Oh NO says Norm need original receipt. I work in retail and know with a bank statement and date you can pull up the receipt and even said that and still NO. I would not recommend purchasing anything from this store based on poor customer service and return policy. read more

Always quick to get a pump to fill at but service inside is so slooooow! I go there often as it is convenient on the way to/from work but I've never experienced such slow service in a regular basis! read more

Although Flying J is super convenient for filing up my 37' Class A Motorhome, the prices and service at this location are HORRIBLE. Firstly, a quick check on CalgaryGasPrices.com will let you know that Flying J is always at the bottom of the list having the MOST EXPENSIVE fuel prices in the area. Sometimes, their price for Premium fuel is 10 or 12 cents higher than the nearby stations on 130th Ave or the surrounding communities. The other thing that irks me about this location, is that it doesn't matter if you but $30 of fuel or $200 of fuel, you get ONE AirMile. If I bought $200 in fuel at real Shell Gas Station, I'd get 15 to 20 AirMiles depending on the monthly deal. Finally, if you ever need propane for your RV, expect to wait, and wait, and wait for an attendant to come out and fill your propane. I've never waited less than 10 minutes for an attendant.
