I can't say enough good things about Focus Salon. Their scheduling process is simple and organized. Customer service in that area is excellent. They are gracious offering candy and soft drinks, tea or water if you arrive early or have to wait. The space is not overwhelming. This is my second visit to Focus - other than the fantastic PJ party Emily threw for the Yelp Elites. My stylist is Lindsay, who looked at the 6 pics on my phone of what I wanted for my new do and basically said my hair could have that look, but it wouldn't look like the pics as it's not as thick and super fine in texture. She started a little longer than I ended up, completely listened to my lack of knowledge on styling, showed me some new products (cruelty free! but no hard sell) she felt would help give me the boost my hair needed, and even two ways to wear the new cut. While it'll take some getting used to actually curling my hair again, with her guidance I should be able to get out the door quickly looking more polished than I have in past cuts. I was told free neck trims (or bang trims for those of you who do that) are available, but of course with the Holidays approaching, book early. Always happy to visit Focus, and to have someone willing to work with me so well. Fourth time's a charm! So I've had it in my head to dye some of my hair plum for some time -- think chic Katie Perry-esque highlights rather than Hot Topic store clerk. Four dye jobs and three salons later, I finally got what I was looking for. Focus Salon's Lindsey gave me exactly what I wanted plus a great cut to boot! And it was actually her luscious purple locks that originally inspired me to go violet. I first met Lindsey and some of her Focus Salon coworkers at a Downtown Abbey event at The Brennan House. (Even Downton Abbey has a little craziness in it!) We chatted a bit at the event, and when I was ready for a cut, I decided to give her a call. Instead of just dying my hair once, she put two applications of color on it, which seems to be where some of my previous style jobs have fallen short. I have fine hair that is more than a little resistant to hair dye. With the three previous attempts at amethyst, the color only lasted for about two weeks and faded to the point where I would stare hopelessly in the mirror trying to make out any flecks of pomegranate. This time my hair is for realz heliotrope. I'm about two weeks in, and it's still as vibrant as it was the day I colored it. I had the underlayer of my hair dyed so it peaks out from among my brunette hair. Lindsey also trimmed my hair and bangs, giving it some layers for some more volume. She was easy to talk to. Hair-cut conversations can sometimes devolve into word diarrhea as I nervously try to fill the silence with whatever weird stuff pops in my head. It wasn't like this with Lindsey, and the other stylists at Focus were fun to chat with as well. Focus has waxing and other beauty services and does men's hair along with women's. It seems like an all-around great salon right on Baxter Avenue in the Highlands. Looking forward to going back! P.S. Someone in my life years ago used to ask me, "Are you living your best life?" Brad (or be rad, if you're one of the cool kids) took me to this existential crisis of a puppet show and one of the puppets asked another, "are you living your best life." If an inept puppet king can live HIS best life, why not me? Indeed. That's part of it, the other part was the woman who used to cut my hair moved without telling me (well, I would have, too...) and I needed a new person to do it. This is the first time I stepped away from chain places that are shackled to grocery stores and shopping centers and ventured into the land of getting my hair styled by someone who does an excellent job. First, Lucas was amazing. I loved what he did with my hair. I loved that he was able to have a conversation with me about things I cared about (Harry Potter, books) and didn't make me fake a conversation about sportsball. I left looking like the old man I am, not the wise old man in the children's movie with the crazy eyebrows that have birds and other woodland creatures living in them. The whole experience was marvelous, from being interviewed about what I liked and wanted done to my hair, to having my hair shampooed (because while I am elitist trash I did come here after working outside, which was gross and rude) and finally cut and styled. They also weren't pushy about buying the products. I would recommend anyone to this young man who looked like a younger, more in need of a sandwich Hagrid. Lucas's beard is something to envy. I may have also bullied him into getting a tattoo but I trust people with beards and tattoos. I want to trust the man with sharp objects by my neck. I can't be the only person who feels this way. Second, this place was very chill. If there was a television I didn't see it and I didn't have to hear the news media take Donald Trump seriously or hear people wax academic about moving the round object of varying color up and down the sports space for millions of dollars. They were playing Pink Floyd. I could have stayed all day and I would have but I they helped me out of the sink where they shampoo your hair. They also made my follow up appointments then and there. Hopefully I will be able to update this to a better review but as of now this is where we are. A little backstory... I've been in the process of growing my hair for 3 years. I just recently had a baby and finally made the toughest decision a gal with long locks could make. CUT IT! I finally made the leap and got a cute asymmetrical bob. Short enough that it's not in my babies face all the time and long enough I can pull it all the way up in a little bun. Perfect! So, a couple of months go by, I move to Louisville and need a trim. I find Focus on yelp and read all the great reviews and think this is it, I'll go here. I make my appointment to go get a trim and a cute little undercut because when I get sweaty the hair at my neck really bothers me. Should still be long enough to pull up because I'm not changing my haircut just adding and undercut. The hairstylist was super nice but did not listen to my needs and didn't not ask any questions about length. I didn't think anything of it because I had already described what I was needing and showed pics. I was told my hair was long enough to put in a bun but when I got home and attempted to do such, I found my hair was so short I could hardly pull it up in just a ponytail and most of it didn't even go in at all. When you walk into a hair salon, at least I do, you want to feel like a new person walking out. For me, I do not ever treat myself appropriately. Maybe I will try doing this in the new year. I maybe get my hair cute once a year. Anyways, I will spare the suspense. I totally walked out feeling like a babe! I loved my new do. I wanted something that was easy, added dimension, and added color. I got it all! It was a combined effort between Tyler for color and Alicia for cut. Both women were phenomenal and made me feel so comfortable. Other clients brought their kids. The kids played nicely. This place is so welcoming. I walked in and it was like I walked into a party. Everyone seemed so close and nice. I was immediately at ease. Had an awesome convo with a fellow hair color woman who drives here from Indiana to get here hair done EVERY TIME! To me, that is a testament to how great this salon is. I honestly was not expecting to find my salon on the first try since I just moved back. But here I am. I am coming back. I did a Facebook messenger text exchange with my long-term stylist at Focus (John Strizak) and have followed John from salon to salon over the last 25 years. So my ask was about the salon not returning by voicemail message to reschedule my appt time with John on 9/1 and to say hey - with all that is going on in the world, I may need to make some changes. So John Strizak sends me this unbalanced and vulgar profanity laced message - unfortunately Yelp won't let me post it but you can imagine the obscene cursory words and the middle finger emoji to me to say F**K Off Steer clear of this salon for sure. read more

I drive from Nicholasville to Louisville every 6 weeks to get my hair done by Tyler. I've been making that (1 hour and 20 min) trip for nearly a year now, but it's completely worth it! Nothing about my appointment went well. I arrived early so I could be checked in on time and ready to go for my 9:45 am appointment. When I arrived, the door was locked, so I had to wait for one of the hair stylists to unlock it. They let me in, where I was left standing awkwardly for a bit before I saw a couch and sat down. At this point, it was myself, and two hairdressers who were cutting two clients hair- it was obvious I had just come in, they literally had to unlock the door for me. No one checked me in. No one welcomed me. Just left me on the couch staring at the wall (with gross paint peeling and half repainted, 0/5 stars for this places decor), until, after 10 minutes, one of the hairdressers looks up and says "I didn't see you come in, I'm running behind". Cool, I figure they'll be about ten minutes behind schedule- after all, I'm one of the first appointments of the day at 9:45 am. Nope. They were 30 minutes behind. On their second appointment. Never checked in. Place is in the midst of a renovation (or just a truly terrible paint job and patched walls). Overall, waste of time. There are few things more rude than wasting the time of others- they can never get it back and it's the most precious commodity. This place thrives on wasting the time of others and providing subpar hospitality. Would not recommend. read more

I selected this salon for my first hair cut since moving back to the Kentuckiana area. The consistently high and positive reviews are hard to beat and obviously from my own 5-star rating this trend will not be interrupted. I was scheduled with the owner, Kim Austin. I was greeted by the front desk staff promptly upon arrival in a very warm and welcoming manner. I saw Kim interact with a couple of clients and an applicant before introducing himself to me and I must say he was very attentive to each person's needs. Cool! So..we went through the usual of me telling him what I want (with pictures to show!) and him offering suggestions to make the look more individualized based on my hair texture, face shape, and how I'm able to maintain. He did a dry cut, shampooed, then finished off with a wet cut. Love it!! He used a razor for the dry cut. This was my second (or third) time experiencing a razor cut, which is rather cool. It's like an artist at work. Anyway...Kim truly reminded me of Edward Scissorhands mastering his creation to give me the medium length PIxie look (with versability). He got a laugh out of the flattery. The salon is very comfortable, the staff very friendly, and I will definitely be a repeat customer. Focus Salon is definitely a win - trust the reviews! read more

So I went to Kim and was asking for a darker shade around my whole head chocolate brown to be exact. Then I asked for money pieces which are blonde strands of hair around the face .. everything was perfectly fine until we blow dried it out.. The front parts were all different colors and all Kim said was that it didn't lift. It looks really bad nothing I had asked for. I felt bad about saying something before I left. I let him know that I should have it toned and he tells me okay he could do it next time. When I got home I called the salon because I could see it more in the sunlight and it just looked bad. My hair kind of looked a little choppy too. My previous hair color was coming through the darker shade I had asked for almost like the color wasn't left on long enough. I called asking for a refund and or half of a refund. But he said they don't do refunds. He told me he could get me in at 9am the next day but still doesn't know how my hair will turn out because he isn't sure how my bleach hair will take it. Why would I go back to a salon knowing my hair will not turn out how I'd want it to or what I'm asking for but to just hope it will. After this person has already messed up the color. Wasted money and time the pictures speak for itself. Not to mention I had thick beautiful hair all thinned out and layered horribly. read more

I have been going to Focus, for my hair, for years now, so I guess it is time to do a review. The worst thing about moving, to a new area is having to find a new person, to do your hair. It is much worse than finding a doctor! When I moved, to Louisville about 5 years ago, I tried 5 or 6 different salons, before I found Lucas, at Focus Salon. I must say that Living Social and Groupon are helpful in the search for hair salons. That is how I ended up, with Lucas doing my hair. There was one other salon and stylist that I liked, but it was so expensive, I had to keep looking. And, I am so glad I did. Lucas is a great stylist. I have curly hair and so many hair stylist only want to straighten and flatten my hair. Not Lucas! I do struggle with my curly hair quite often, but I do like having curly hair, because that means my hair does not always have to look the same. Lucas never makes it look the same. If I had the time and money, I would have a standing appointment every week. I bet I could go 3 months straight of weekly appointments and Lucas would style my hair differently each time. He is pretty amazing; he uses a straightener, to straighten, but he also does curls with it. I have tried to copy his techniques, but will probably never succeed. Not only is Lucas a great hair stylist, but he is a great guy. He is professional and friendly and interesting. He also is vey helpful, to the other stylists. The salon has a good, friendly vibe and you can tell they all get along and are not only co-workers, but friends. I have started using the Torilla, for her waxing services. I had already met Torilla, from my appointments, with Lucas. She is very friendly and I am so happy I have started having her do waxing, for me. Now, I need to try her out for a facial. I am long overdue. Another plus, for going to Focus, because I do not live close by, is there are so many places to try, before or after your appointment you just have to plan right; O'Shea's is right next door, for happy hour. Also, getting a popsicle, from Steel City Pops, is a great way to ease into your appointment. Focus is a Paul Mitchell Salon and sells many different Paul Mitchell products and supplies. Focus is definitely a Yelp discovery for me: It was Jasmine A. that recommended the salon and since the location is extremely convenient for me I decided to take her advice. My first visit was a walk-in and I got a cut (and I think a color gloss?) from Lucas. That was over two years ago and I've been really happy with my hair ever since. Even though I have primarily interacted with Lucas over the years, everyone in the salon is extremely nice and welcoming. Personality and aesthetics are such a huge part of picking a stylist and I just think everyone at Focus have the qualities that appeal to me in those areas. The playlists and conversation are always good, which is nice when you are sitting in a chair with a foil crown for a while. More recently I started visiting Torilla for waxing services and I really think she's helped me achieve my best possible brow. She has wonderful, thick brows with a great arch so I knew she wasn't going to butcher anything. So in addition to the hair cut/color services I would recommend any services from her as well. Now that I've been a client of Lucas for a while, I feel completely comfortable putting my hair in his hands without really having an agenda. I'm not particularly bold about initiating changes, but I've also never been afraid to lose length because my hair grows fairly quickly. Kim Austin has been taking care of my locks for 5+ years, and I really never expect to go anywhere else. He has great ideas about keeping my short style from becoming too routine and changes it up slightly every time - because I prefer to maintain a similar look. Now that I am growing my hair long, we are working out a long term approach to avoid those awkward moments - you know the ones. I had booked an appointment to get my hair lightened just like Jessica Alba's honey blonde hair highlights with a warm brown base. As a first time client in Focus Salon and not have established a relationship, of course I brought photos with me on my phone and explained what I wanted. To start, my hair was already a dark brown (my hair is naturally black and wavy). The stylist worked on my hair and 30 minutes in, I was absolutely terrified it was blonde like platinum blonde. The chemicals also made it that it got very hot quick on my head and the foils started to fall. An employee even said it never happened before. I was told it will look exactly like I wanted so I was patient. After it was done, I looked like Jessica Alba alright, but Susan Storm! I almost cried, but I was also the type of person who won't throw a hissy fit so I calmly told them this wasn't what I wanted and I wasn't happy. They booked me the next day to get it fixed, and they processed it again. At some point, I told my stylist and another one who was helping her mix colors that I wanted it warm brown now and forget about highlights and all that. The guy shoo shooed me and told me it'll be okay. Whaat? I ended up having blisters on my scalp the next day and at that point my hair was stick straight with no body, so dry, and super blonde. I thought I could pull it off, but no. It wasn't even flattering. I asked for a full refund ($300+), which they did, and even gave them back the Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner. I should have known not to go through with them when I walked in the salon and a mom was complaining that her daughter's blonde hair was ruined. I'm still nursing my deeply damaged and dry hair and using deep conditioning masks. Still no help and will end up endlessly waiting for my hair to grow until the damaged parts are cut off. read more

I originally became a customer here as a walk-in several years ago. It was a chilly Thanksgiving week. I was off work and occupying my time by walking around the neighborhood, and noticed how shaggy and disheveled my hair had become. Since my regular stylist had moved from her shop to some place in LaGrange, which was not too convenient for me, I decided to go in and risk letting someone else hold sharp instruments to my head and chop my precious hair. I'm extremely picky about who cuts my hair, especially after several bad experiences over the years. It worked out well, in case you were wondering. I became a regular. At that time, it was a young gentleman who, embarrassingly, I have to admit I no longer remember his name (I did always leave with a buzz...like I'm going to say no every time someone asks "would you like another glass of wine"). He left after my second visit for a job closer to his home. Then, Megan took over, and I still have yet to experience a cut that requires me to wear a hat for anything more than a stylish accessory. When I first moved to the Louisville area, I was anxious about trying a new salon and new stylist, but I am so happy that I found Focus. The whole staff there is so nice and helpful. I have been to many salons where the staff is uppity, but Focus isn't like that at all. They are very friendly and welcoming. They are always patient and nice when I have to reschedule appointments (which happens a lot with my busy schedule). The best part, and the main reason why I keep going back, is that I love my hair! Lindsey always does an excellent job. She will do exactly what I want or if I'm not sure what I want, she some how reads my mind and my hair always looks and feels so fabulous. She is easy to talk to and insightful with new products, but not pushy. I usually don't get anything too crazy or different done with my hair, but I always love it. I got my hair cut into curtain bangs by a man named Kim here yesterday and I just wanted to say that it was amazing! This place is so good and I loved the way my hair turned out. It was so damaged and dry and his magic just brought it completely to life. The price point was higher than my usual great clips endeavors but it's so worth it. He talked with me for a long while and even offered some tips to help me with my hair quality. As he was cutting my hair, he was explaining what he was doing and when he washed my hair he was telling me all about the ingredients in shampoos and what to avoid. Then, while he was styling it, he told me everything he was doing and how to do it in great detail so I could successfully achieve it at home. I have commitment issues with hair salons. Since 2005 when I left my hometown, I have not returned to the same place to get my hair cut more than once. Aerine at Focus changed that. I have been to Focus twice now, as a walk-in. And, dare I say, I have found a hair home! Aerine immediately made me feel like we were old friends. Comfort and compatibility are so vital to me when trusting someone to my mane, and she is perfectly friendly. Not only was she easy to talk to, but she did a great job with my mess of hair (again, commitment issues with hair salons... let's say it is embarrassing how long it had been since I had gotten a hair cut.) She listened while I rattled off my requirements - long enough for a ponytail, layers to thicken up the back, bang length, easy to style curly or straight - and then got to work. She listened to what I wanted - soooo important - and then rocked out with the leeway I gave her. I adore my new hair and, for the first time in eight years, I made a return appointment! Great staff, attentive (would you like some more coffee or wine? YES), good location, regular deals on treatments and products (I got half off a keratin treatment this month), and accepts walk-ins. I also found Focus Salon on Yelp. Megan is as wonderful as everyone says. I had been so frustrated with my previous haircuts, I actually started chopping on my hair myself...not good. I took a picture to Megan as a starting point and she made it into so much more. She's a wizard with the scissors, having great skill and attention to detail. Can't thank her enough! From the complimentary wine to the shampoo space (dark, calming, and intimate) to the open stations, Focus has considered every aspect of your experience and does it better than so many other salons. read more

Focus was my first 'big girl' salon experience. Up until yesterday I had always just gone to my mom's salon back home whenever I felt the need for a cut. I was lucky enough to be chosen as a hair model for the salon and so I got an entire hair transformation in exchange for modeling for Focus. I was beyond giddy. I have dreamed about getting a luxurious cut and color at a high end salon, and Focus definitely delivered. Lindsey was phenomenal. She came up with the vision for my hair and walked me through each step so that I knew what was going on. She even accommodated for my busy schedule and kept the salon open well after closing, something she certainly didn't have to do but did anyway to work with me! She was so sweet and personable and truly knows hair! I'm so pleased with my cut and color. I feel like a new woman and Focus (especially Lindsey) deserves all the credit.
