Granted, it's a Tesco petrol station shop, but when you get down to it the place isn't actually much bigger than your average Shell store. And yet, I manage to come away from there feeling a little annoyed that they didn't have the particular kind of sliced fresh bread I was after. That is, surely, a testament to how well stocked the place is. It has fresh baked goods, veg, snacks, a strong range of chilled (tasty!) ready meals and meats, magazines and newspapers, a freezer section and a decent amount of dry and canned goods. Yes, I said fresh baked goods. Yes, a petrol station with fresh brownies! Basically, there's enough there to fool you into thinking you're in a proper (if very compact) supermarket, which is no bad thing. In terms of petrol, the pricing is fair while the number of pumps ensures that you rarely have to wait more than a minute or two to fill up. All in all, I'm very glad Tesco Express is in easy reach of my house.

Morrisons 'market place' is a unique set out for a supermarket and you can find fresh fruit and veg along side a fish monger and butchers where just like the advert shows you, the staff will be more than happy to talk you through whatever cut of meat you require or even fillet your fish for you. There is also a bakery and rotisserie offering yummy treats such as pork pies and sausage rolls as well as hot roast chickens. Another good point worth mentioning about Morrisons is that they do from time to time do brilliant offers. It's worth looking out for them on the internet or in your local paper.

It is large enough to have a full range of goods that you would expect of Morrisons and is conveniently located for York city centre. Being brand new it is also clean and specious, There is also a large car park with petrol station and car wash available. Petrol & Diesel is usually the cheapest in York as Morrison's always seem to be the first retailer to announce price changes. This store is also on the same site as a large Homebase store and Frankie & Benny's restaurant!

I still get excited when I roll my trolley onto the travelator-escalator to go and hunt for clothes and electricals and toiletries and glasses and home stuff downstairs. Easy to while away a couple of hours here - especially cos there's a McDonalds at the entrance - so make sure you're not in a rush. Open 24 hours, but the staff tend to be less friendly at 1.30 in the morning, I've discovered. Was it because I was skipping down the aisles or something? Cheer up, you work at BIG ASDA!

This huge Asda store under went a big refubishment recenty. Sadly I don't think it improved the…read morestore in any way. Firstly they discounted lines of Halal sweets and I can no longer get them anyway. They also moved the baby section to the furthest corner of the store on the bottom floor which means its a right trail plus you have to go through the toy section and my older son now bugs me every shopping trip for a new. But my biggest problem is that they now employ staff to carry around signs in front of the tills which say space here which I feel is plain stupid. Clearly I can see for myself how many people are in a queue. Totally pointless. Dispite these problem the staff in this store are usually very friendly and helpful and the prices are great so it is a good place to shop.

Not that I have anything against 'rustic' looking places but I do when it is more...well...rusty....I am always a bit dubious about entering this shop as it looks like it may collapse..and again, so does the owner. They sell a good range of products such as fruit and veg, washing up stuff, flour, eggs, milk etc and so if you are in the area and in desperate need right that second for any of the above, it will do the trick. But don't forget that there are many shops like this in the Hyde Park and Burley area, many which won't strike fear of death in you or be slightly overpriced.

They do, however, sell single portions of things for the lone shopper who enters anyway despite the huge 'cash and carry' exterior, such as myself. I managed to find cans of Coconut milk for only 59p each which is almost half the price of other retailers. My whole basket came to less than a fiver, which would have been more around the £8 - £10 mark in most other shops. They sell vegetables, breads, and meats fresh or frozen. Biscuits, sweet goods, kitchen wear such as baking trays and other handy bits and bobs, and various cosmetics such as bath/shower gel etc. Susan is right about the name being somewhat confusing as it is mainly foods from Asia and Africa and not the common British conception of 'continental food' (deli style West European). If you are after the latter (Italian, French, Spanish etc) you are probably better off going to a deli in town or a chain supermarket.

Prices are fantastic, packages have a variety of sizes to suit your needs and it's like an Aladdin's Cave. Go have a snoop around, I bet they stock something you'll want to buy at a great price!

The owner is a compulsive lier, and has tried to publicly make me out to be a thief. Avoid!

The shop is quite big with all your usual tins, cans, juices, fruit, veg, biscuits, cheese, milk, and papers. But they also have a Post Office at the back, a shelf of childrens toys AND a vast selection of booze. The alcohol selection here is much more fruitful than your usual Grocery or Newsagent. The lady behind the counter was very kind and helpful when I asked for directions, finishing her elaborate hand movements with "You take care love" in that always comforting Northern accent.

I visited here to pick up some essentials such as milk to pick up some essentials on my way back to the Doubletree by Hilton York, where I was spending the evening. The store is pretty much your average Sainsbury's convenience store, the selection is okay but not excellent and it is open until 11 pm every day which is ideal for the location. The store basically has most things you'd want in a convenience store, despite certain issues such as the staff not seeming too friendly which was a shame and the issue with the condition of some milk, for example, the first one I picked up appeared to have some sort of leak, so that was frustrating. Satisfactory, average convenience store so I feel this Sainsbury's Local branch in a good location in York centre deserves a slightly generous three-star rating.
