My wife and I were craving a good chicken sandwich, and since I'm always up for a Pliny the Elder, Foghorn Taproom ended up being the perfect spot. She's not big on spicy food, so we went with a mild chicken sandwich to share. It was my first time not going for the hottest level, and I didn't feel like I was missing out at all. Super flavorful, perfectly cooked, and just an all-around great sandwich. The service was great too. When we arrived there was no line, and they took our order right away. Foghorn for me is one of those close solid chicken wing and beer spots. The wings are pretty big compared to like Wingstop in Daly City. I like the honey crunch. The spicy is pretty spicy but not like Indian nor Latin spicy. So you could hang with that kick still there if you can handle spicy. It's a pretty small setup inside. It's barstool vibes and a few seats out front. If you got kids or stroller, might have to wait for a good opportunity to sit. They give you a number and serve it to yall. I would give it a yeah I would drive across city for it if you gona do like a Golden Gate Park stroll/hang type of day. I just dinged it a star cuz seating and parking is a bit of a struggle but overall great wings and cerveza. That's beer in English. Gotta make everything accessible now. Despite being well aware of this place, as well as Foghorn Taproom's spot on Irving Street in the Inner Sunset, for whatever reason, it never registered my brain that the two might actually be connected. What makes it even sadder, though, is that I've actually passed both spots before and have had them bookmarked to try for years now! So, you can imagine how much of a pleasant (and also mildly unpleasant) of a surprise it was when I pulled this up on Yelp and discovered they're actually related! Smrt I is. Tucked in between Sushi Bistro and Cinderella Bakery, and somewhat obscured by their parklet, this Foghorn Taproom can be easily missed if you aren't paying attention (side note: this stretch of Balboa Street has some awesome restaurants). That being said, said parklet is pretty awesome, both in terms of being able to drink outside on a warm night and for the additional seating, as this place isn't that big. Similarly, the menu may seems pretty slim, given how it's mostly made up of chicken wings. However, with a dozen different varieties, as well as a mix of salads, bowls, wraps, chicken & waffles, and chicken sandwich, there's actually plenty of food options to choose from. That's without even mentioning their terrific collection of beers, too! -- DRY SPICE CHICKEN WINGS...$8 (5 wings) It's not as unique as some of their other styles, but I don't see dry rubs that often. Thankfully, this was pretty good - it had the perfect amount of rub, the mix of spices/seasoning was tasty, and the chicken itself was so juicy. -- HOT HONEY CRUNCH CHICKEN WINGS...$9 (5 wings) Even though, this was neither as hot nor as sweet as I thought it might be, it was still pretty good. While I wouldn't have minded a bit more heat, this still had a touch of both sweetness and spiciness that was well balanced. -- SEASONED FRIES...$5.50 (small) Not amazing, but not bad either - the fries were crispy and decently well seasoned. That being said, I wish they had been both crispier and seasoned more aggressively. -- LEMON PEPPER CHICKEN WINGS...$8 (5 wings) This was terrific! The wings had a slight tartness from the lemon pepper seasoning, but squeezing some fresh lemon juice from the wedge they include really put this over the top. -- PINEAPPLE BASIL CHICKEN WINGS...$8 (5 wings) Sadly, as interesting as this sounded, it was my least favorite. Mostly, the sauce just felt really ambiguous - it didn't have an overt pineapple or basil flavor to it. That's not to say it was bad, though - it just didn't feel like one or the other to me. -- NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN TENDER...$5 Easily the best thing I've had here! You can choose from six levels of spiciness, but I opted to go with just medium spicy, which had a very slight kick to it. More importantly, the seasoning on this was really flavorful, the batter was crunchy, and the chicken was moist! Across each flavor that I've tried, the one thing that I love about the wings here are how big they are. Whether it's their drums or their flats, every piece has been really meaty and quite juicy as well. What's more, the workers have been super friendly, too, which is never required but always appreciated. Love that they have a happy hour and Wednesday wings special, too! Given how they're typically airing the Giants/Niners/Warriors when they're on, it can get a little busy here during games, as well as Friday and Saturday nights. However, we've never had an issue getting seats, especially if you're willing to share a table. This review is for food only and the food was really bad. The chicken sandwich was extremely dry in all aspects, the buns and the fried chicken itself. The loaded fries had Nashville fried tenders chopped up and they were so dry to the point where I did not want to eat it. I also did not know the loaded fries would be with so much Cole slaw, which just made the whole thing super soggy and barely flavored. The only good part was how the chicken wings were cooked to be tender and juicy. However, we got three flavors (buffalo, Nashville, garlic parm) and NONE of them tasted like something I'd want to continue eating. The wings aren't crispy and while I appreciate you can specify the level of heat with a five point range, other than the heat, there's very little flavor. This was definitely the most surprisingly delicious meal I had while in San Francisco. When some friends of ours recommended we go for wings at a place close to their condo, I was a little less than enthused. The bevy of wing flavors, some unique menu choices, and much more on offer than just fried things surprised me. My friend and I decided to get a variety of 5 piece bone in wings in 5 flavors, and a large order of their brussel sprouts. Before I get into the food and flavor, this was definitely the most reasonable priced meal of my San Fran stay. Somewhat expected, being a neighborhood place. Wings were just a couple bucks more than what I was used to paying. I'd also say, the wings were large and juicy, as was the brussel sprouts order. Enough in there for 4 people definitely. The brussel sprouts, besides being generous, were perfectly done. Not overly oily, bit of char, sweetness, crisp, but done to the right level. They were impressive. The wings... WOW! Like I said before, large, juicy, bit of crisp on the skin, just the level of doneness you hope for across all the flavors. As far as the flavors go, there certainly was not a bad one, but the Korean flavor absolutely stood alone as the "I would put this sauce on everything" favorite. It was spicy yet tangy, I would guess tamarind is in it, the wings were all generously sauced without swimming in it. The other flavors we had, in order of yum: Hot Honey Crunch, Buffalo, Mango Habanero, Garlic Parm. All I would order again. Also, I kind of like that you order at the counter and don't have to bother with a waiter. In general, I quite enjoyed this experience, and could see why this would be a neighborhood favorite. There's a unique world of Fried Chicken that exists within the San Francisco city walls. It's diverse in its many cultural offerings and unique styles and presentations. Instead of trying to recount all the fried chicken offerings I found in SF, I will just cut to the chase and tell you Foghorn Taproom is at the very top of any fried chicken list in SF. I got the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, chicken tenders tossed in maple bourbon and fries. Got the comeback sauce and cilantro ranch for dipping too. The chicken sandwich goes toe to toe with any in the city. Dare I say the best? The tenders are a nice size but really it was elevated by that maple Bourbon sauce. That's a high level sauce. You could toss my shoe in that sauce and I'd be pretty happy. There are several other things I want to try here. But it's not hard for me to conclude that when it comes to fried chicken that Foghorn Taproom leads the way in San Francisco. Ps. I've been going to Foghorn for several years now, and they always have great chicken sandwiches, excellent tenders and wings, great crispy fries, and a solid selection of beers on tap! The Nashville hot wings and sandwich are exceptional. The quality is consistently high, and the atmosphere is great for sports and for drinks after work. Also the bartender they have currently, Becky, is legitimately one of the hardest working, thorough, and most cheerful people I've ever seen! She consistently on her own initiative goes well above and beyond in cleaning and taking care of the store and hustling to get customers anything they need. She's always cleaning the corners of the bar, cleaning underneath the bar mats, filling condiments and organizing everything whenever she has free moments.
