The best meal of my life commensurate with the location & the staff. Every detail of this hotel was meticulously thought through and implemented with passion. I don't recall every morsel served but they were all delicious. Even the kuri squash served with the moose tenderloin were spectacular. You've flown in from Monaco on your personal 757 and then chartered a Helicopter to get to Fogo Island or you made the two day pilgrimage from almost everywhere to get there. Voila, the bucket list is reduced by one check. (A fat one). The restaurant is a lovely three story floor to ceiling window where you can gaze at the horizon. Ireland to the left, Iceland to the right. Twenty foot long Rope Chandeliers cast soft light so as not to distract from the spectacular sunset. You'll want to eat the view. A dude on a squeeze box and his bud on guitar provide Karioke worthy Irish folk tunes to chew by. Irish music makes me want to grow stubble, drink to oblivion, and man my punt. (Okay, I don't need Irish music for that.) The dining room is all bleached wood and gleaming white paint. You'll feel like you're having your first meal in Heaven's commissary. Wear something shear that matches your new Dolce and Gabbana gossamer wings. Everyone speaks in hushed reverent tones and here I thought I had been consigned to the flames for eternity by the time I finished school. The Staff: Can't do enough to please. They treat you like the family that actually cares about you instead of squirming when you're seated next to them at Thanksgiving). The Vibe: Money, Big Money, F. U. Money. The Bar: You pick from spirits you know to wines you don't. The Food: The menu is separated into sections of Starters, Appetizers, and Mains plus Dessert. You can peruse and then chose whatever tickles you or simply have the lot and it's a lot. The Food: Let's call it delicate juxtaposed against the rugged raw coastline just outside the window. Indigenous flower buds and slivers of fish livers are tweezed onto your plate with surgical precision. Local inhabitants prepare micro works of art on every dish, and in their free time they can field strip a 40 pound Cod in seconds, drink 4 pints and then pin all comers in arm wrestling...and wait till you meet the men. Marinated Scallop slices came with either first of the season Green Strawberries (or did they just get lost in the walk-in and go green?) Teh berries were dusted with Burnt Breadcrumbs and it disappeared in one fork lift. A slurp of Benjamin Bridge Sparkling Brut was so dry it hardly felt wet on the way down. A house baked Rustic White Bread came with two juicy Beef patties, a thick slice of Cheddar, Caramelized Onions, and extra Bacon. Okay, that was just in my brain bubble. But you do get Cultured Butter. The Snow Crab (last of the season) lay atop poached local grown Sorrel and Rhubarb which is just gender confused Celery if you ask me. This too all fit onto the tines of my salad fork. One gulp and gone. The Cod Belly Toast (Black Soda Bread) had some Bone Marrow discretely hidden, Lobster Butter (make that one claw quickly dragged across a pat of butter once), baby Herbs du Peu M'importe, all arranged under a prehistoric Nasturtium Leaf. This too was hoovered with gusto. The local caught Halibut batons with Squash Dumplings (doing their Gnocchi dance), Napa Cabbage threads languishing in a pool of Albufera Sauce (Escoffier's ramped up Veloute with Demi-glace) was a most delicious riff on fish fingers. Every dish was a Stepford Wives' replica of a Lalique Bentley hood ornament. Finally, as I was ready to raise the white flag of surrender I realized it was just my shirt tail and I was presented with Haskap Berries ladled over Chocolate Mousse (not to be confused with the Chocolate Moose you get at Easter). Half moons of Chocolate Wafers protruded at an angle like the Sydney Opera House. A quenelle of Buttermilk Sorbet balanced the tart and the sweet which also describes who can be seen on Hollywood Blvd. at sundown. For breakfast, I swear to Cod (locally hand line caught) first thing in the morning was perfectly poached just before service and anointed with Beet Top Jam, roasted Beet Bottoms, and Whey Froth. Hey, I make that three days a week at home. Not. No one does. Behold, intrepid traveler, what Cod hath brought forth, sayeth I. And it was good, to mix my scriptures. Do not forego Fogo Inn. You wanna be "in", don't you? So, don't forget to go to Fogo Inn unless you want a raging case of FOMO. read more

The guard stopped me from visiting Fogo Island Inn and restaurant at dirt road entrance. I mentioned I came from Hawaii to go to restaurant and only guests allowed. Hawaii hotels have the warm Aloha! Fogo Island Inn was cold and rude. Can't walk up to the hotel because it is secured like a prison. I was disappointed and left. I have not been back to Fogo Island for a while now. I worked on the technology infrastructure of the Inn for over a year - they wanted top notch gear for their world class inn. The Fogo Island Story with the Cobb Family and Shorefast Foundation is a true feel good Canadian story. The Inn was basically founded, designed, built and run by mostly the local people of the island. The people of Fogo are the friendliest folks you will ever meet. It took me a while to get use to not locking my doors and arming the car. Really, it's an island with Ferry service - cars really have no place to go but in circles. The Inn itself is built with nature and harmony in mind. The dining room overlooks the ocean and you can see icebergs float by as it migrates south. The Inn has locally manufactured furniture and even the mattress has the FII moniker on it. If you like what you see, you can even buy it from the locals that fabricated it. When you walk into the Inn, you get cool nature meets modern chic. The rooms face the ocean and you really can't get a better view. They have all the modern amenities and a very slick toilet - will let you figure that one out. WiFi, TV if you really really need it, a theatre, a gallery/library, gym, sauna, hot tubs, and a top notch dining room. The food was fantastic when I was there - they even grew their own herbs! I'm sure they are better now. The place is really expensive and I still think they are full board - pay one price for room, meals and drinks. Recently Gwyneth Paltrow was quoted as calling this place "heaven." If you will only do one trip of a lifetime in Canada - this will be it. I visited the Fogo Island Inn for three nights in September 2021. It was a wonderful experience. This special Inn --where lodging there is like visiting a very hospitable friend's simple but beautifully comfortable home-- is so firmly and authentically rooted in one of Canada's most unique mini cultural milieus. The remote, tiny north Atlantic island's people, landscape and stunning seascape are intertwined in a couple of centuries worth of history embracing enterprising independence, amazing perseverance and down-to-earth realism that comes from survival against all odds. They share their stories with visitors in a refreshing matter-of-fact but proud-filled way, demonstrating heartfelt hospitality. The Inn is of and about this magical island's people. We stayed at Fogo Island Inn for 5 days with an energetic 7 year old boy. We were apprehensive at first given the acclaimed reputation of the hotel. Our concerns were unfounded. Staff and guests welcomed us. The staff would sit on the floor and play with him and build fun things. The reputation for extraordinary dining and service are well deserved. We had the opportunity to meet the executive chef in his kitchen and his approach is uniquely Newfoundland and consistently delicious. All the staff work so hard to ensure the guests have a fabulous experience from the room to outdoor activities to relaxing in the lounge and dining area. You can do as much or as little as you want without repercussions. Our son summed up the whole picture of the Inn and the outdoor scenery: "This place isn't beautiful, it's gorgeous!" The only hotel I have ever been to where I hugged the staff upon departure. We decided to go there for our honeymoon, and it's hard to sum up the experience. While it's easy to think of the place as a 'luxury hotel', it's so, so much more than that. We were shown around the island by a community host, developed bonds with the staff within days, had a magical tour of Little Fogo Island (which we had completely to ourself while we were there), a personal geology tour, time with the architect and design team ... snuggle sessions with 160 lb Newfoundland dogs ... the experience was difficult to sum up. A beautiful Inn on a beautiful island with beautiful people. This is a hotel with a heart. Everything in the hotel was meticulously designed by international designers, then crafted locally. The building itself is modern and stunning, yet fitting within the island. Plan your stay for at least 3 days, because there are so many things to do on the island: hiking, biking, berry picking, art studio hooping, and many many more. People on the island are the nicest, warmest and the friendliest. We were also privileged to watch a live presentation about the inn and the island, by Zita Cobb, the most down to earth and most knowledgable founder of the foundation which owns this beautiful inn. I am not sure writing comments about a meal at this Inn are necessary at this point. Suffice it to say, our lunch was an unique and amazing experience. From the moment I heard about the Inn a couple of years ago, it has been a dream to go to Fogo Island and stay at the Inn. A confluence of events, my sister and brother in law deciding to take a trip to Newfoundland, asking me to join them, my wife (sadly) being too ill to join us and the fact we were staying at a terrific Airbnb in Tilting, provided the perfect opportunity. We took a tour of the Inn and then had the above mentioned lunch. Everything, literally everything, from the cocktails to the desserts to the amazing wait and bar staff (worth a visit by themselves) were different, and better, than anything I've had in the past. Not only that, but the opportunity to sea a whale in the ocean through gigantic windows, while eating lunch, is rather apraxia, in itself! Enough, too much repeating. If the chance ever comes to visit, make it a priority. I'm sorry I had to leave. read more
