There are 3 famous fountains here. Fontana die Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Neptune. but the main attraction in Piazza Navona is the Fontana die Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) and it was designed by none other than Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope X.
The base of the fountain is travertine rock which supports the four river gods. Above the Gods is an ancient Egyptian obelisk with a dove and Pamphili crescent at the top. Each of the four statues pays tribute to one of the major rivers in the world. it was great talking to guide who was puffing and enlighten me through his knowledge.
The four river Gods represent the papal authority throughout the world. The Nile (Africa), the Danube (Europe), the Ganges (Asia, India), and the Rio del la Plata (America). The design is absolutely beautiful. Recently the fountain became more famous due to Dan Brown's book "Angels and Demons" ( that where villain Drowns saint into the fountain and Robert Langdon saved him, yes that one).
The fountain resides outside the Pamphili Palace which served as a family residence for the Pope. read more
