Restaurants, cafes, hotels and a couple miscellaneous shops and church buildings line this thoroughfare. The car traffic coupled with many pedestrians constantly crossing, I'd warn drivers to be very careful in this area! A statue of Saint Antoninus of Sorrento, patron saint of the city, stands in the center, a salutation to those entering the historic old town. On the north edge, the sidewalk overlooks and connects to stairs that descend down to a hairpin turn in the road at the base. On the southern edge, there's a deep ravine (Vallone dei Mulini) filled with plants, trees and shrubs, and an old abandoned mill?), smack dab in the middle of the block. Constantly tourists take pictures here day and night lol. Walking thru here about a dozen times over the course of two days, there wasn't ever a quiet moment, even during shoulder season. Restaurants are busy being that it's such a central meet up point. Perhaps only at around 7am one day when most tourists were still sleeping was it quieter with only locals out and about.

Take time to check out the beautiful baroque yellow church and everything Limoncello while you are in the neighborhood. The lemons in Sorrento are enormous and the geography reflects their impact. Limoncello granitas. Lemon pasta. Lemon biscotti. Lemons on everything from dish towels, baskets and bags to headbands. My sister-in-law even bought a pair of swim shorts that were covered with a large lemons in the pattern. Nice for a short stop while exploring Sorrento. Tip: There is a bathroom next to the church. It takes one euro each.

Sitting along the eastern boundary of the Amalfi Coast, the city of Salerno is more urban than its…read morewestern cousins though has a seaside appeal of its own. While I didn't have time to explore the city, what I saw reminded me a bit of coastal towns long the south of France like Antibes--marinas filled with boats along an azure sea, rocky waterfronts and pastel colored buildings about four or five stories tall in the city center. There is one main train station and several smaller stations where local commuter lines stop. Two port areas service the city, Porto Turistico, a smaller one where more local ferries dock, and where I went to catch a ferry to Amalfi, and Porto Salerno, where larger ships and cruise ships sail. For a visitor, there's a few noteworthy view points, some coastline with beaches, a handful of archaeological and historic cultural sites around to visit, though it's not a main draw the same way some other towns like Positano, Amalfi, Ravello are. It felt more of a local, quieter waterside town, a transit point for tourists headed for the rest of the coast. Certainly less over the top in the way Sorrento has become a luxury resort hub.

Standing at the foot of the famous steps of Amalfi Cathedral (aka Duomo di Amalfi Or Cattedrale di…read moreSant'Andrea), it's hard not to stop and take in how beautiful this place is. Located in Piazza Duomo, the cathedral is one of Amalfi's most important landmarks and dates back to the 10th century, when it was built under Duke Manso I. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt and redecorated, blending Romanesque, Baroque and other architectural influences. Most famously, it is home to the relics of the Apostle Andrew, which were brought to Amalfi in 1208 and remain in the cathedral's crypt. We climbed the steps, purchased our modestly priced tickets, and started by walking through the Cloister of Paradise, with its beautiful arches and columns. We browsed some of the exhibits before heading down into the crypt, where St. Andrew is said to be laid to rest. The crypt was probably my favorite part--beautifully and intricately decorated, with detailed frescoes, gilded stucco and a large bronze statue of the apostle at the altar. We then made our way into the cathedral itself and spent some time soaking in the beautiful architecture. There's quite a bit to see here without needing a huge amount of time, took us maybe 30-40 minutes to make our way through. The cathedral is conveniently located right in the center of Amalfi, making it an easy addition to any itinerary. Overall, I enjoyed our visit. It's beautiful, historic and definitely worth climbing those steps for. The green marble and intricate details reminded me of the Cathedral in Siena, which was one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've ever been to. Definitely take the time to go inside rather than simply admiring the cathedral from the piazza if you have the time.

The exterior renovated in the 19th century resulted in its current form today, the interior is much older dating back from 10th century. The building was constructed over a 6th century church, with those remains composing the simple and austere Basilica of the Crucifix that houses a museum of the church's treasures of religious ritual objects and artifacts. Other decorative styles are represented here as well--the main nave and aisles of the cathedral originally erected in the 1st century then revised in the 18th century, and the ornate Crypt from the early 13th century exemplify lavish Baroque designs, while the remaining frescoes within the chapels surrounding in The Cloister of the Paradise are 13th and 14th century Byzantine works. As of April 2026, tickets to enter are €4 for adults and €2 for children. Hours are daily between 9:00am to 6:55pm, last entry at 6:30pm. The cathedral only is open for prayer daily from 7:30-10:00am and 5:00-7:30pm. While not large, it's worth a look--the design of the cloister is intimate and unique. It's always awe-inspiring to come face to face with art that's outlived so many centuries of history, and probably will endure for much longer than us.
