Great coffee, awesome staff and excellent egg choices (and the warm kale salad is legit). Couldn't be happier.

Plain basic cafe/bistro fit out. Little to please the eye here. The cafe has a nice open air area…read moreout the back which provides a view of the river albeit with a car park prominently in the foreground. This might be controversial but the establishment has a slightly bogan air to it. It's an accurate observation much as I love my fellow man and a bit of lowbrow now and then. The eight people at the table next to us weren't so much talking as shouting at each other. We were mystified by the behaviour which was irritating. This place wasn't my choice and I was thinking rather dimly of it before our ordered charcuterie board arrived at the table. This near eradicated any negative thoughts I had about the place. The board was very nicely composed. Every single item on the board was as fresh as a daisy, dancing with flavour and lovely on the palate. The size was perfect too. Spot on for two people who weren't ravenously hungry. I arrived with a cynical outlook, we left very happy. It's a 3.5.

This place was absolutely jam-packed when we visited. The staff were friendly and efficient, but…read morethere weren't enough of them. Consequently, tables were sitting there with leftover dishes still on them, uncollected. We had to pick a table that hadn't been cleared and push the dirty dishes to the side. The food itself was really nice - we shared a burger and a beetroot salad, both of which were generous and tasty. The position is lovely, overlooking a creek. Just avoid the busier times and you'll be well looked after here.

An unassuming wooden door leads to thirteen narrow steps and an unexpected gem. The food is…read morecomparable to Melbourne's best; the wine selection is wide, deep and almost entirely local; the atmosphere could not be better and would almost have you believe you'd ended up in New York or Scandinavia and perhaps best of all the wait staff are knowledgable, attentive, friendly, welcoming and; if you're lucky; might even be the owner himself. My wife described it as possibly the best meal she's ever enjoyed and I'm hard pressed to offer a counter example. Dumplings and quail were demolished for entrée followed by the incredible duck salad and burger for mains. Desert was perfection: a boysenberry and vanilla parfait. Book in advance for certain as seating is limited but do not let a trip to Bright go by without stopping by. This establishment will meet and exceed all expectations.

Times are changing in Bright. A town best known by food fans for a few hits (la blance ice…read morecreamery, Simone's) and many more misses, evident in the frequently changing restaurant styles, formats and menus, now has a well-established modern indoor/outdoor brewery and this little beauty, 'Thirteen Steps.' Strolling curiously past one day, the owner stopped boy partner and myself with 'You have reached your destination'. Clearly conscious of the prestige of the clientele he has just stopped (flattery gets you along way with us) we paused and heard the story. With a fair pedigree behind them, owner and chef have moved from Melbournefor the good life and bought Thirteen Steps last May. They opened in November and one look at their adventurous menu had us sold. Well expectations were high but I couldn't possibly even image the experience before us, easily best of the year and might even scrape into top 10 restaurant experiences EVER. The atmosphere, in a sexy cellar, down 13 steps (logically) has an intimacy you dream of. The food was exceptional. The pork shoulder/duck fat/thyme terrine smashed café vue for 6, the coconut duck curry laughed at Chin Chin and the pickled burger grinned menacingly at Huxtaburger. We were granted samples of wine before we chose our bottle (most between $30-$40, unheard of in Bright). Then the fun really started. Dimly lit lights gave way to romantic moments, neighbours chatted, the vinyl started spinning - French house don't mind it they do. 'Appropriate to dance?' I queried. Taking my cue from the hipsters sipping tequila next to us (are we in Berlin, perhaps Eastern Europe, La Esquina in NYC?) I bounced in my seat -having.a.ball. Dessert - doughnuts with dripping chocolate sauce and crème brulee. Bravo - I throw my hands in the air (didn't but you get the picture). All this for under $150. We stumble up the stairs, spilling out into the street. There is no one in sight, no sounds, just a door in a wall, 13 steps down ,something special awaits. I imagine I'm giggling, secretly stealing away from a speakeasy in a land and time far far away, it's a discovery - I told you first....
