Now, I am a lover of all things Comic booky, board gamey and generally a bit geektastic (if you didn't already know that). A trip to Forbidden Planet is a pretty rare occasion for me as I know my wallet will be angry at me every time I even begin to look at the dusty shelves filled with pretties... I popped in yesterday for the first time in a while. I got a £10 gift voucher for my birthday and desperately want a copy of "Takenoko" after playing it for the first time at SciFi Weekender in Wales (it's a board game where you have to grow bamboo - much more fun than it sounds). After the distributor telling me that Forbidden Planet could easily order this in for me, I hastily nipped down on my lunch to enquire about this. Now, service has always been mixed at this branch of Forbidden Planet. The staff are very informed about their products, but sometimes it can seem a little Elitist. The gent which served me yesterday was friendly and helpful, but seemed a little put out that I wanted to order something in and wasn't sure he could. Needless to say, I have given them my details - so will have to update the review later if it can be achieved and the transaction completed. The product range in this store is pretty vast. Stocking everything from themed boardgames (they stock "Adventuretime" Monopoly!) to Graphic Novels and various merch (again, a huge range featuring a selection from "Twilight" to "Minecraft"); you will normally find your particular kink catered too. We are lucky to have Nostalgia and Forbidden Planet in quite close proximity. If you can't find what you are looking for in one, you can always pop down and try the other! From the moment I queued what seemed like a mile around the corner to meet Amber Benson aka Tara from 'Buffy' (yes, this is how positively cool I am), I was in love with Forbidden Planet in Birmingham. A haven for all those grown-up boys and girls who still find pleasure in playing with toys and secretly wish they were superheroes, the store in Birmingham is a little out of the way from the main shopping drag - but that has kept its inherent charm intact. If you fancy checking out the latest comic book issues and memorabilia, this has always been the #1 destination in the city. It's not massive and it feels a bit like a cave in there thanks to the dingy light, but again this helps set the scene for what should be a bit of a secret geek den. The staff are always helpful and clued-in (a must for any place like this, where the customers are sure to come loaded with really specific questions) and, for a pretty small space, there's so much to see and wish you could afford to take home with you that you could spend a good hour in there just having a nose. read more

I love this shop, I love the action figures, the super expensive statues of super heroes, the comics ill never read and the clothes I'll never wear. None of this matters because this shop is just fun, always a lot of colour and latest stock on the shelves from the newest nerd breakthrough. All the video game figures are here, from Halo to Mario. Some are really cheap when others are super expensive but I think like everything in this shop, it's all down to collectors value. Upstairs is a massive bookstore dealing mostly in comics and back issues. But they also stock a cool section of art books some that are quite hard to get anywhere else. They order in comics or figures you might need for your collection if you ask. Sometimes it's cool just to talk to the staff about new comics or tv shows, have a little nerd to nerd time. This place is worth a visit just to excite the kid in you again, unless that kid has died due to the monotony of modern day life. read more

Any comic, Sci-fi, toy geek knows that you always go to every supplier in a city in case the one has something the other doesn't, but if you can only be bothered to trek to one of the two in Brum then pick Nostalgia and Comics instead. Both of these shops are part of large chains, they are like the light and dark side of the Forbidden Planet coin. Forbidden Planet is at the mercy of their London brother for stock often getting shafted on the range, even if you request stuff. They are also often more expensive than Nostalgia as well as seemingly lower quality. They do however have a permanent sale section, where items are a mix of super cheap or barely anything off. If you are looking for more indie items and comics, and recommendations then check out Nostalgia, if you are after a wider range of general Sci-fi fiction, trading cards and t-shirts then Forbidden Planet it the place to check out. read more

I love this shop as it has all the latest comic books and memorabillia from great T.V such as The Simpsons and Family Guy. I haven't been in here recently but it had a refurb last year and looks better and more noticeable now. If your looking for rare and exclusive merchandise then you will certainly find it here with ease. The staff are always waiting to help you and will almost always find what you need. Forbidden Planet is the UK's biggest chain of comic book/memorabilia stores. You'll find all your latest merchandise from all geek/cult shows, from Family Guy to Star Trek to WWE, and whatnot. Action figures, posters, keyrings, statues, all sorts - even replica swords, if that's what takes your fancy. The prices on these things are generally quite high because it is a specialist store selling imported goods. But if you want them, and you are wary of buying online, you don't have many other options (although be sure to check the more standard stores like Woolworths, Argos and Toys R Us - when they do have the same items, they are usually a lot cheaper than you'd pay here). The Birmingham branch is on two levels, upstairs is the books and comics and downstairs is all the film/TV memorabilia. Really nice staff and they have alot of comic and books and clothing, they are selling for really silly prices online and I see people actually buy them. Not many stores around. closest ones ive been too are wolverhampton and birmingham. Has a lot of sci fi and fantasy thing in a The staff here will go out of their way to help you and make sure you have everything you came in for. So I have been an on and off customer [of Forbidden Planet and it's predecessors N&C] for 30 years, and today I thought I would like to ask for favour in return for all the hard earned I have put there way. Essentially my lad [3rd gen potential customer] had done a star wars related design and technology project and had uploaded to youtube, So I thought I'd ask the staff to have a look and give a few comments. but when I did they did not want to know !! and just said they did not have any time. Forbidden Planet's your main stopping shop for the geek in your life. Loads of posters, toys, etc of Star Wars, Star Trek, Simpsons, Dr Who, Family Guy, wrestling, and all manner of weird Japanese toys and trinkets. It's worth checking Internet prices for things because you might end up paying over the odds here. It's also one of only two comic shops I know of in Brum. The other, Nostalgia & Comics, sells all the same kind of stuff. Always check the two as one will sometimes sell stuff that the other doesn't, and prices vary - you could pay £15 for something in Forbidden Planet that's £10 in Nostalgia, or vice versa. read more

I ordered two Funko Pop's on Sunday (they were by far the cheapest place to buy them} and they were then dispatched on Tuesday and I received them on Thursday. They came in perfect condition and to my surprise one of them had the exclusive sticker on (the website says that they don't always come with the sticker). I have already a pre-order for some Funko Pop's due to be released in December and will definitely use them again. read more
