I left to go shopping at Walmart. I come back to my apartment and they used all of my clean towels that were hanging up and drying. They used it to clean up their mess from the water heater. My bathtub was clean and they left dirt in my bathtub where you wash yourself. They tracked dirt all through my apartment and salt due to the weather that we have been having. I do not recommend this corporation to anybody you people have just lost a tenant and probably will lose more. Buckner properties would be ashamed. If ANYBODY lives in the Cookeville TN area looking for apartments or houses or even a condo I would call and recommend BUCKNER PROPERTIES!!!! Ask to speak to Mike very nice guy.

My dad was here for rehab…read more The place looks secure. It isn't. Anyone can drive and/or walk in at any time of day and no one will question why you are there. Many unlocked doors at all hours. The "security gate" is rarely attended, and even then they do not check incoming or outgoing traffic. The staff, although friendly and tries their best, is not adequate for the sheer number of temporary and permanent residents. They also lack basic resources, like working equipment, much less modern equipment. The amenities are terrible. No wi-fi. I realize many of your patients are older, but a great deal of them are into technology and would love to use their laptops for their own entertainment. I tried to find a cart (or luggage cart) to haul some stuff to my dad while he was here (a stereo and DVD player and storage) but nothing like that is to be found. Really??? In a place where people stay and are moving in and out all of the time, similar to a hotel, you have no way to help your patients feel more at home?!?!? Ridiculous. The food, although meeting nutritional guidelines, is quite bland and mediocre. Finally, the complex itself is an endless maze of nothing making sense. Their is no central check in, so good luck finding who you are looking for. I've been trying to not write this, since their is a chance of my dad going back, but we will pick a different rehab facility next time.

The staff was just incredible- I don't even know where to begin! Everyone was so kind and patient. They explained everything, and made the process as comfortable as possible. I will always remember their kindness. I know that my mom was well taken care of in her final days. I couldn't have asked for a better scenario during those difficult days.

Let's be honest. Nobody wants to "need" a hospice. It means that you're dealing with end-of-life…read moreissues. In most cases, this will be for yourself or for a loved one. In my case, my father had been admitted to Hendricks Regional Health and was in ICU when we began to realize that serious decisions needed to be made. As his only surviving immediate relative, I was tasked with these decisions while also acknowledging that he was still coherent enough to participate and we'd also previously had discussions pertaining to this. My father wanted to die in his own home. This was a difficult task because hospice requires someone living with the person 24/7 as a sort of primary caregiver. Hospice is a support unless, of course, you actually go into a facility setting. My nephew had been staying with my father, primarily because he needed support himself. However, he'd been keeping a closer eye on my father and was there when he went into a health crisis. The decision was made to try to honor my father's wishes - my nephew would stay in the home and I would provide logistical, financial, and physical support. Despite living about two hours from my father's Putnam County home, we were going to try. Life's Journey came as one of the recommended options from Hendricks. They had a document indicating many of the options. It was clear that the social worker was quite familiar - pretty reasonable since Life's Journey is actually Avon-based. We contacted them - they couldn't come out that night (they usually do) as the intake person was ill, however, we made an appointment and intake came as scheduled. Kudos to Terri for being a strong presence and representative for Life's Journey. We discussed a myriad of issues. Once the decision is made for hospice, it moves quickly. You go from medicating to cure to medicating to comfort. The hospital really becomes irrelevant as major interventions are no longer appropriate. My father was discharged by home with ambulance transport. That same day, a nurse visited the home for a long (about three hours) appointment. I believe her name was Becky - she was amazing with my nephew, a 24-year-old with little caregiving history. He really took to it. We didn't know what to expect. Some said he may not make it to my scheduled appointment with a lawyer a little over a month later. Some said 3-6 months. Hospice starts off with typically 2 nursing and 2 health aide appointments weekly along with chaplaincy support as needed. It increases as one's health declines. Life's Journey offers home hospice, facility-based hospice (in Avon), and palliative care. In some ways, doing a Yelp review is weird. It's hard being "happy" or "unhappy" with care. Generally, I was pleased. Little things bothered me - an aide who no called/no showed twice, a chaplain who never visited despite having been requested to do so, and a last conversation that, if as reported, bugs me. My father ended up passing in a little over two weeks. The nurses were for the most part amazing, the health aide fine when she showed up, and I appreciated that the bereavement director visited my nephew after my father's death (upon my request). We received a lovely gift, a lantern representing light, after my father's death (it went to the funeral home - ironically, arriving late. Somewhat humorously, the batteries died in three days - I started calling them hospice batteries). When my father started his serious decline, Life's Journey responded quickly. A nurse was in the house within a couple hours and agreed that he was declining. They increased his visits, however, it would only be 48 hours later and he would pass. This was a good experience that fell a bit shy of what I'd hoped. For the most part, I'm very grateful as it allowed my father the dignity of death in his home while staying comfortable and being supported. Little touches could have improved the process greatly, however, this was a good experience at one of the hardest times of my life. I would be more inclined to recommend for those in the Hendricks County area - I'm a little less inclined for those in surrounding counties and especially the rural ones as I think that impacted presence. Overall, I'm pleased and grateful. With a few tweaks, this could have been an exemplary experience.

Based upon recent experiences with my mother and mother-in-law, if you are looking for assisted…read moreliving for a loved one, consider the following: 1. Don't just talk to the sales staff. Seems obvious but I failed here. Their job is to get you to sign on and obscure the less positive aspects of the facility and operations. 2. Talk to the Executive Director. Ask if this is their full time position or do they have responsibilities outside the facility that take their focus off the facility you are interested in. Find out how often they visit the residents in their apartment (ours never did). If they don't do this, ask them how they stay engaged in the operation to understand the resident's needs. 3. Talk to the Nursing Director. Ask the same questions as the Executive Director. Also ask how they assure resident safety. Listen for rote practiced answers with little sincerity. Ask how they deal with conflict resolution when a resident and an aide just do not see eye-to-eye. My experience with this was maddening. 4. Talk to the Chef. Ask them if their budget meets their needs. Ask how they deal with quality control so that food is not overcooked and therefore tough for old folks to cut and chew. 5. Ask if the facility has a nutritionist, and if so talk to them about how they assure vegetables are a part of the choices available. Ask how often they work with the Chef to ensure nutritious choices exist. 6. A big one: ask to see written policies defining levels of service and if they use a points system (I think most do), ask for written policies that define this points system. We didn't understand the importance of this until health started failing and then were refused anything in writing. I now feel this was unacceptable. 7. If your loved ones have limited mobility ask how the facility works to engage them into the activities and get them out of the isolation of their room. With this facility and the requirements of the building codes, the apartment doors truly encumber resident visits between apartments. Ask those you talk to how their operations work to neutralize this. 8. Ask sales, the Executive Director, and the Nursing Director how they track the activities of the aides so that you are assured you are getting the services your loved one is paying for. Found out there is no such thing at this facility (and maybe that's the case at others as well). But, if you ask, you'll at least know it going in. Also ask if they are fully staffed (all facilities are struggling with staffing). With tight staffing how do they ensure resident safety never waivers as aides may want to hurry residents that no longer can physically do this. 9. Of course, visit the Indiana State Department of Health website to understand any violations or reports tied to the facility you are interested in. Please know that while I was extremely frustrated with a couple caregivers and what I saw was a lack of correction and accountability, there were several wonderfully caring CNAs and nurses.
