My wife, two children, and I were immediately welcomed and made to feel an important part of not only the church, but what we are trying to do outside the walls of the church. There are a great number of places we've been encouraged and been able to plug in and serve through the Ardmore family in big and small ways. Places like City Lights Ministry, Samaritan Inn, SECU, Ronald McDonald House, and the Bus Station ministry, Solus Christus locally, international missions to serve Haitian refugees in the Bahamas, or regional missions serving here in NC. The new POPS (Parents of PreSchoolers) group is awesome! Ardmore also has a fantastic new Senior Pastor in Tyler Tankersley! He's young, vibrant, engaging (not just from the pulpit but also one-on-one), and is leading us to focus on who God has created us to be as individuals and as a community IN the broader community. The ministerial staff work beautifully together and all the different areas align toward common goals. This is one of the few places left it seems where there are so many people with differing opinions on the world, but they still work and love side by side. None of us is perfect, by any stretch, but this church family tends to put aside worldly differences to work together. One of the most important things for us is to know that our kids are loved and cared for and that their spiritual development is important to the people of the church. The Children's Ministry and Youth Ministry areas are wonderful at Ardmore. The leaders encourage the kids to ask questions and have the kids engage the story. Our kids have been through Ardmore Baptist Preschool and they loved it! There is so much love and positive faith guidance, and so many opportunities to live out our callings with Ardmore that I can't imagine a better place to develop our faith and serve people around this city.

We enrolled our daughter at St. John's in Kindergarten and began with high hopes. By the middle of…read morefirst grade, we had to pull her out. The collapse was swift and impossible to ignore. At the end of our very first year, two out of six teachers quit, and the younger preschool classrooms were revolving doors of staff changes. One teacher was stretched so thin he was teaching gym, music, computers, and filling in across departments. That is not "well-rounded education," that is desperation by leadership. There is so much nepotism and favoritism here as well. It's uncomfortable and glaringly apparent. Leadership is the heart of the problem. The principal, barely in her thirties, is condescending, inexperienced, and unwilling to take accountability. Families raised concerns again and again, only to be brushed off. The entire experience got worse when this principal hired her Mother-in-law as the fifth grade teacher and she became a by proxy principal/drill sargent. Our daughter's first-grade teacher was visibly struggling and unprepared after only 3 years of total overall teaching experience. This created a classroom environment that was neither stable nor enriching. She was let go after only one year at this school. Meanwhile, the school is constantly begging for money. Endless fundraising campaigns, yet the standards sink lower and lower. It became painfully clear this school exists to keep the church's lights on, not to serve the children entrusted to it. We invested ourselves fully, tried to become part of this community, and watched it unravel in just 18 months. Since leaving, the flood of negative reviews has only confirmed we weren't alone. SJL school rather than addressing issues is just blocking google and facebook reviews. Unless there is a serious overhaul in leadership, this school won't make it another five years. And make no mistake: it was never just us! We know now of 3 other families that were in class with us that have also pulled their children from this school.

I want to speak up for the sake of other families. There are…read morecurrently multiple open investigations involving this school. Out of respect for those involved--and because I've been asked by law enforcement--I cannot share details, especially since they involve minors. What I can share is my personal experience. My family was part of St. John's for nearly six years, and my daughter thrived for most of that time. However, after Tiffany Banks became principal two years ago, our experience changed significantly. Over the past year, I had multiple meetings with administration regarding serious concerns about my daughter's safety and well-being. Those concerns were not handled in a way that gave me confidence that my child--or other children--were being properly protected. When I later discovered my daughter had been hurting for months, the response I received from leadership was deeply troubling and lacked both urgency and compassion. As a parent, that was something I could not ignore. We made the decision to withdraw our children in January. In my experience, there was a lack of transparency and a pattern of communication that left me feeling that important information was not being fully shared with parents. I stayed quiet for months, but I can no longer do that in good conscience. If you are considering this school, I strongly encourage you to ask direct questions, stay closely involved, and trust your instincts when it comes to your child's safety. If you would like to speak privately, you are welcome to message me directly on facebook. - Sydney Cole
