Self Check out and account query stations at the library.

For the longest time, we had no idea there was a public library here on the UH Campus here in Sugar Land, even when my wife took some classes there for UHV. When I saw the signs saying library, my impressions were that this is probably just your typical school / college library that students go in for research and study. It wasn't until a few years later when we had our daughter, we found out from our neighbor who has a girl slightly older than our child, told us how she, a stay-at-home mom, brings her daughter to the University Library every so often so she can read books there, participate in story times, and check out books. When I heard it, my response was. "Hey, I thought that would've been the First Colony Branch Library wouldn't it?" *My first job was a Page there during High School*. But was assured that it was not the same location in my mind. We decided to pay a visit and wow, we were amazed. Upon entering, we immediately knew this was no average college library, but a public one because there were parents with kids going in and out. There were children's section and adults section. We started our library card, and started checking out books to bring home for our daughter to read for free, it was great! *Library fines will still be assessed for overdue books, of course* What was surprising to me was, in the grown up section of the library, there was a DVDs section where, one might find some titles (Movies or Series) that you may have thought about checking out before (either a long time ago in the theaters but didn't go, held off on getting the DVDs, missed the chance to get it rented or just couldn't find it in a Redbox). Guess what, you just might find it here, and best of all, it's free, and you typically get to check it out for 3 weeks, just like the books. It might not be a big, big section, but it had a lot of good titles. The self-service Kiosks were a great idea, where you can basically check out the books on your own by scanning your library card and the bar codes on the books. You can also use the kiosks to check your account to see if you have any outstanding books that has not been returned, any fines, and to extend your check-outs. I think each book gets one extension when they are out. This station alleviates the check-out counter's traffic so much that sometimes they look like they had nothing to do (just kidding), the only thing the kiosk does not do is allow you to scan your checked-out items when you return them. Your returns are either dropped in the return slots outside, or if you want to make absolutely sure you returned your books, you can bring them to the front desk and the librarians can manually scan return your books in for you. Like so many library patrons have done, it is highly advisable to bring along a durable bag to use to bring books back and forth, otherwise, there would be too many books you might want to checkout and can't take them all in your hands. Believe the second floor is more for studying as it is generally more quiet and less activities (or rather kids running around) going on. We are so glad to have this resource so close to our house and will continue to visit. I am sure, as our daughter age, we will utilize more and more of the other services here that we have not yet discovered.

Yay a new library close to my house! It's beautiful, with lots of natural light and open space. It's the perfect place for studying! Quiet, free wifi, lots of tables and chairs, and 6 study rooms upstairs. Understandably, no food or drinks allowed though :(. The study rooms, which can be reserved for two hours at a time as long as your surrender your driver's license, are nice and spacious, with large windows in every room. Beware though, they're freezing!* I came with a cardigan during the summer and I was still so cold I had to step outside in the blazing Houston heat for 10 minutes just to defrost. Next time I come, I'll probably bring sweatpants and a thicker sweater. Or maybe a parka. *Disclaimer- I am more sensitive to cold than many people though, haha.

Perhaps my favorite library in the Sugar Land area! Only one exit down from where I live I love coming here..checking out one of the study rooms for some peace and quiet....Staffed by some really nice personnel the place is a haven for students as well as residents of the great town of Sugar Land! The newest library in the system it is located on the campus of UH Sugar Land with ample parking and great facilities and resources! With a great children's section, my kids loved coming here in the summer! They also offer these free classes and seminars throughout the year! One of the nice hidden gems in our town...one of my favorite places to while away the afternoon! They have plenty of PCs for residents and students to use as well as a solidly reliable Wifi network! I love it when the new reading comes in! Inevitably I'll find something I want to check out! For avid readers the library is the place to be! We're so lucky we have this one!

Of the libraries in the Fort Bend System near me, this would be my 2nd choice of what more an you ask for of libraries. This one is a two story building and I think it's larger than the Sienna Branch but maybe it's just me. There are plenty of computers, there is a large kids section downstairs. So if you are studying for something important I would reserve one of the study rooms upstairs. The place is spacious and cleans. My allergies are not killing me. The building is pretty new, maybe when I retire I can come work here.

Very spacious, lots of computers and couches/tables, and has nice views. The kids can be a little loud downstairs, though.

The study rooms are nice too, you have to reserve and you have 2 hours, more if it's not being waited on.

There is a water bottle refill station next to the individual bathrooms. The ambiance is stunning and modern, not exactly silent but not too loud despite the presence of a children's section. We didn't try out the other amenities of those library, as we had a lot of studying to do. Would highly recommend as a place to quietly meet up with a friend, get some remote work done, or escape the Houston heat for free!

I criticize Houston a lot for its poor public planning, but the Public Library System is one thing…read morethey've done marvelously. This library is sleek, modern, and absolutely beautiful. Color tinted windows brighten up the gloomiest and rainiest of days. Artsy geometric themes line the walls, ceilings, and furniture. Whatever your reason for visiting, the interior provides an abundant amount of space for it. More importantly than aesthetics, this library goes above and beyond in the resources it provides. It has passport services, computers, printers, study spaces, and books, similar to most libraries. What most libraries don't have though? Video recording studios, podcast rooms, and sound engineering booths. All fully equipped with instruments, all soundproof, and all FREE. OF. CHARGE. I absolutely love seeing this available. It provides people a creative outlet and a chance to feel heard. Other available gadgets include 3D printers, Cricut machines, and premium media editing software. C.J. and several other employees are at your service if you ever need a tutorial. According to the American Enterprise Institute, library visits have decreased by roughly 31% since 2000. I wouldn't have been able to tell based on my visit today. I saw plenty of parents, kids, and students lost in their own worlds. Free third spaces (locations other than work and home) have become increasingly rare; turns out that if you build a pretty library that's valuable to all, the community will come. I can't emphasize enough how cool this library is. It's a rare sight of tax dollars being utilized incredibly effectively. This isn't some privileged resource in River Oaks or Memorial Village; it's located in the unassuming suburbs of Westbury just outside of I-610. You'll leave this library impressed one way or the other. See for yourself.
