Only the best facilities for Airborne, hooah! However, Airborne's not what I'm doing. I'm at the 641st getting ready to move out overseas. Benning has great facilities; big PX, restaurants, internet cafes, a library and so on. My area has crappy WiFi, DFACs that close on the weekend and no drinking allowed. This is my second trip to Benning for CRC. First of all, thanks to all our men and women in uniform for all their sacrifices for our country. If you coming to Benning for CRC, bring lots of patience. As a Army Contractor, we are the last ones on the totem pole so if your are a DA Civilian or Military, you results will vary. I was here before in 2006 and it was not this crowded. Got sent back to Benning over the weekend since I'm headed back to the sandbox. After checking in early Saturday morning and hearing the speeches from our cadres about letting them do their jobs since they are the most experienced, we were put in three lines dived into military, DA/DoD civilians and contractors. 1.5 hours later, my papers are marked stand by even though I had a reservation a month ago. Told to come back at 5pm. So we come back at 5pm with about 100 other folks. Sit around for another hour. After calling some more military and some other DA folks, we were then told to go home. No explanation on way, other when other dates are available. Very frustrating since we have been trying to get reservations for over 1 month and now we are back to square one. read more

Oh boy! I had such a great time! You'll have a great time, the Drill Sergeants were very nice and friendly. Always had a big smile. Greatest schools; Ranger, Airborne, Infantry, Armor/Cavalry, etc.

Food was excellent, service was top notch. Lovd thee contractors that would go above and beyond, staying past 1500 to make sure we were satisfied. "Drill Sergeants" were constantly making sure of our well being, if you got injured would be the first and last to make sure you were okay. Loved it. Enlist in the Army of the US of A read more

It's the home of the infantry. You'll love it here and hate it here. Just like being in the infantry, times here are bittersweet; seizing the moment of glorious victory one day and struggling in the suck the next. If you're lucky enough to be here for one of the great maneuver schools the MCoE offers or ranger, go visit Iron Mike. The post is ok. I was stationed here in 2006-2007 and now again from 2011-present. When I was here in 2006 I was single and lived on-post in the BOQ. Now that I am here with my wife and son, we chose to live off-post. We actually live in Fayette county. We liked the area better up there and the schools are the best in the state. I do have to commute 85 min to work each way, but its worth it for my family. Benning is constantly under construction and is always in some sort of disrepair. I am looking forward to the day of moving into the private sector. read more

I had a job offer in Columbus so we researched the area and found that Fort Benning offered housing to military retirees. That has changed now and they are forcing the retirees to move off-post. I'm all for supporting the active duty and they should come first but I do find it strange that we got a discount to move in and they pay referral fees to people to get new residents. How does that makes sense? How does privatized housing really benefit anyone--a little mold, a little lead, and the active duty turn over their BAH anyway so what is the cost savings, though it probably looks good on paper moving funds from one bucket to another. The housing on-base has vacant units but it is unknown the condition of those I cannot believe that there is not enough room to have housing for all that want it and have it be cost effective. I'm all for supporting the local community but take a drive around. Again, I know mission comes first but I do see that Fort Benning does not follow the mantra of "continue to serve" since some clinics at Ft Benning do not take retirees now either but that might be a good thing considering the care that some have, well, have not received. Take a look at some news stories and I could tell a lot too. I do fault post "leadership." Do they not have plans and preparations for forecasts? Evidently not. We all know how that goes. We tried to patronize the Exchange and Commissary though the Exchange, per usual, is overpriced and I do wonder what the hiring criteria is. There would be no reason to shop at either once moved off-post. I enjoyed living in military housing for the safety and availability for walking and biking though. Be aware of service at some facilities. I've had awesome experiences but in general, I do wonder what the hiring criteria is. Overall, the gate guards breakdown that the military ones are nicer than the civilian ones. I would have been content staying on base considering the City of Columbus options. And the Military Police, usually professional but the main goal seems to stop people from driving a few miles over the speed limit. Not the best use of taxpayer funds for all the money spent on security. There are known security issues on post (which I would not post) but nothing is done. We'll probably stay in Columbus for one year to recoup the moving costs, thanks leadership, and then relocate. If you are a retiree realize that you are not valued anymore than DoD civilians or non-US entities and instead of helping those that served, put on a facade to the local community. read more

I was at Fort Benning in October to attend my boyfriend's RASP graduation. It was my first time in GA and I was quite pleased with my experience. Benning is gorgeous, the graduation ceremony was great, and the soldiers were very kind. I was impressed by the number of great restaurants and things to do in the area (we had previously been at Fort Sill in Lawton, OK, which is a pretty lackluster town). It's large and spread out so I used my GPS to get around post and did just fine, despite the bit of construction being done. read more
