I have tried studying at starbucks and other libraries but it just doesn't compare with this…read morelibrary. My best friend studies Ocupational Therapy so i accompany her to study. We have done trial and error with various libraries and starbucks but found our spot here. To enter the parking you need student ID, otherwise you can just park outside and walk. You also need student log-in for the internet or you can just create a guest account. There is an outside area that is nice if you want to study without freezing your butt off. I usually come to study outside while i'm eating and then once i am done I study inside. I bring a good hoody, sit in one of their comfy chairs, with good lightining and hardly any noise. There is the option of independent study 'cubicles', Study rooms , or the normal 4 comfy chair tables. I usually choose the independent study cubicle because i prefer to have no distractions and helps me get 'in the zone'. And this library is open until late. Now this is what i am talking about! Would i return? You bet !

It is a very small space with a sweet gift shop full of books. We saw a really old printing press. Lots of examples of books and printings dating back to the 1400s. Added bonus, the air-conditioning was kicking when most places around here don't have any. It was a lovely respite on a HOT summer day in the Caribbean.

I've called and visited so many libraries in PR I have lost count. During this past week I decided to go to Rio Piedras, "barrio" in San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital, where a lot of libraries surround one of the University of Puerto Rico. After going to 4 different libraries, I ran into this one. Little did I know I had found a gem in the middle of Río Piedras... One of the employees there took me to the second floor, where old, vintage and classic books are hidden from the public eye. Several first editions. This librarian took me on "a trip" down Puerto Rico's most interesting stories... after an hour or so I left the store with around 7 books based on the topic I have been looking for and every book ranged from $5-15. I took 7 books for little over $70.00 and when I reached for a CD of Puertorrican traditional songs, the librarian gave me the cd for free. This place is the best! They have from the newest to the oldest books! Do NOT hesitate to visit it if you love books.

This place is an old prison that is converted to a tourism/welcome center. The staff there was very…read morefriendly and helpful. I went their to get a map of the local area attractions. The map was very helpful and they highlighted points of intrest for me to visit and the route to take to get to them. There is not much to this place. Inside you will find a display of local art and some history information placards. If you out of the back door you will come across a courtyard with a few tables and chairs. And if you go to the right, you will and through a very narrow walk way, you will come across three originals cells from the old prison. They do not have doors and are very primitive. If you are doing a self guided tour of San Juan, this should be your first stop. It gave me my marching orders and I was able to organize my stops.

We took a shore excursion in Puerto Rico to see famous sites throughout San Juan. Our first stop was the Antigua Prison de la Princesa. This prison was built in 1837, taking the name of the walkway, the Paseo de la Princesa, that runs along it. In 1854 during the reign of Isabel II, the tower and watch were built and placed. While it was in operation it had capacity for 240 inmates, continued as a prison until the 1965. The building was rehabilitated in 1989, and currently houses today the office of the tourism company of Puerto Rico and contains a contemporary art exhibition. We toured the old prison area. It was definitely not a very nice place to spend. We were told about the history of this prison while we were inside it. Its cool that it now houses the tourism company of Puerto Rico and I really wished we had the time to actually see the art exhibition. Still, this was a great first stop on our tour of beautiful San Juan.

Checking out El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro) in San Juan, PR was 1 of those experiences…read morethat really stays w/ you long after you leave. This historic Spanish fort was built in the 1500s & played a major role in defending San Juan from sea attacks during the colonial era. Walking through it, you can really feel the weight of that history. The thick stone walls, open courtyards, tunnels, and lookout points all reflect how strategic & intense life had to be back then, especially w/ the constant threat of war & invasion. What really hit me most emotionally was just being there & taking it all in. Standing on the grounds overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it was easy to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago(soldiers watching the horizon, waiting for ships to appear). There's something powerful about physically being in a place that played such a major role in PR's history. It was honestly a really memorable moment for me. Not just b/c of what I learned, but b/c of how it felt being surrounded by so much history in 1 place. It gave me a deeper appreciation for San Juan & the stories built into the island itself.
