If you are interested in military history then this is a must see. The Germans used this location in France (German occupied at the time) to use their new ideas of military technolgy and defence. There are scheduled guided tours, no independent wandering here.
We arrived at 4pm on a Thursday and caught the last tour. It was two hours and only offered in French. They were nice to provide us with an English detailed guide pamphlet. Other English guided tours were available the following week but it appears they only offer English tours mid July until mid August each year. I suggest calling ahead before you drive here due to their limited hours too.
Once walking with the group it was nice to go in many of the underground fort rooms to see how they prepared for war, ate, slept, and what they wore. They even explained the use of weapons and restrooms.
I do not suggest this tour for anyone who is afraid of small spaces. Otherwise I strongly recommend this fort. We have visited many US civil war and revolutionary war forts and never seen anything like this. read more
