What can one say (write) about an Army Base that's not really an active duty post anymore, per say?…read moreIt's large, sprawling, ready and able to facilitate Army Reserve unit's from across the country though, so it's got that going for itself. Converted WWII barracks that are both barbaric and efficient. Open bay style as if you were in boot camp still, and one bathroom per floor. No A/C, but plenty of windows and large fans to keep things tolerable. Having never been there during the winter months, I do question the barracks' ability to keep things warm though. As a whole, it does well for massive Army Reserve training exercises, but it still leaves a lot to be desired for long term "Residency," if you will. And to clarify, 1st Army (active component) is on post. Nevertheless, I'd hate to spend anymore time than required here. You might have a different opinion, which you're entitled to, but this guy has seen enough, thanks.

The museum's no longer at the address listed on Yelp but is now at 321 Superior Avenue. This is a…read moresmall museum, basically 2-3 rooms with an open floor plan. Their claim to fame is that Frank King, the author of "Gasoline Alley" came from Tomah, so they have a number of his drawings and sketches, a few paintings and some artifacts (it appears you can purchase some of the advertising pillows/dolls? including the Mammy-like caricature of the character Rachel in the gift shop). There is a selection of World War 1 ephemera including a surgeon's instruments for amputations; military hats; a small barber chair with barber tools; a shoe shine chair with ladies' shoes; a small cabinet with displays of crochet, including lace; a few quilts; a small kitchen display; several dolls, a toy display, and a few JFK and Dwight Eisenhower items, including a painting of Lincoln by Eisenhower and a wooden box JFK kept on his desk to give candy to kids. (Possibly a Norman Rockwell JFK portrait, but it might be a print.) In addition, there are a few Native American artifacts, including baskets from 1940-2000; a pair of moccasins found in a cranberry bog; and a large collection of arrowheads. Recommended admission is a dollar. If you're in Tomah, might as well stop.

This large marker is located in the westbound Sparta rest area and points out the local geology and…read morehistory. It's an interesting read as you stretch your legs between Tomah and La Crosse. The marker reads, "From the hills all around, rugged valleys collect for rivers that feed the mighty Mississippi. The early French called such a valley a coulee. These many valleys, large and small, still are known as coulees, a regional name for a regional landscape. Here the glaciers never came. The great ice sheets grinding out of the north sometimes passed to the west, other times to the east, to plane the land, carve out the Great Lakes, and leave deep deposits of gravel and other sediment everywhere but in coulee country. Coulee views along the Mississippi are proudly compared with the Palisades of the Hudson and the hills along the Rhine. Coulee Country is world known through the writings of Hamlin Garland, 1860-1940, a native son." It was erected in 1973 by the Wisconsin Historical Society and is marker number 198.
