Fort Steilacoom Park just has so many amenities that sometimes you have you're go here several times to see what all of those amenities are and even then you might have missed something. Unfortunately for our dogs they aren't socialized well and don't really want to be friendly to strange dogs. Sometimes they aren't even friendly to each other and another episode of dog Dynasty is unfolding then. Such drama queens but with Chihuahuas what do you expect? Anyway Steve and I have strolled through here a few times and if your dogs aren't like ours it's really a nice, wide and spacious leash free park to run your dogs. Outside of this area is you need your dog leashed and the park is still a good outing for them in that regard. But to really let your doggo run hard this is an excellent option to take them to. read more

My dogs love it here! I always take them a couple times a week, after we walk the trails. I really like the fact that all the other dog owners at this park are super chill and no one seams to be rude. (Knock on wood) I highly recommend going into the wooded area off the paved path. It was fun, relaxing, quiet and beautiful. There didn't seam to be a lot of other dogs on any of the paths but I did enjoy that. Sometimes it's nice to just be alone with my pups exploring new things. We went on for awhile to, thought we got lost but then I remembered we are literally in a city and not the actual wilderness so it'd all be ok. Lol. That's the feeling you get though and I'm my opinion it's great! I feel like we all could use some fresh air and alone time with our fur babies and here is the perfect place to take them. read more

We absolutely love this dog park! We spent most of our spring/summer here. It's by far the largest one we've taken our pups to and they love to roam and play with the other dogs. Just be cautious with owners who bring their small dogs into the big dog section. We also stopped coming due to multiple run ins with dog owners who had their dogs leashed and threw pretty hefty fits when our dogs wanted to play. I come here 3 to 4 times a week for jogs. Gotta maintain that figure from all the foods I eat lol. It's pretty chill here. It's nice to escape every now and then. This park is always full of dogs! I hate nothing more than going to an empty dog park. It offers three separate sections ( one section is very small and normally has a family in it, the middle section is great, but the larger section is the best)! Haven't had any issues with bad owners, people are pretty good about picking up their dogs poop. Only bad thing is when it rains... Which it rains a lot here... It gets bad mud puddles. Which wouldn't normally bother me but my pup loves to lay in them and drink from them. We have had to put off going there lately because she caught Giardia from there ! I've been to three dog parks in the Tacoma area and I have to say that this is by far my favorite one. I love that all three spacious parts of the off-leash park are gated. It keeps it safe for everyone. My pug loves it here. He can run, walk, or smell to his hearts desire. If he wants to be a loner, so be it and if he wants to play with others, the merrier it will be (for us). We've had a positive experience with other dogs so far. I also like that many of the dog owners who come to this dog park picks up after their dogs, although it would be nice if ALL owners did that. It's not that hard considering that bags are placed at all the entrances of the dog park. read more

I love this park, there is something for everyone here. The dog park is what we started coming here for but once we saw all the full park has to offer we just kept coming back. We love to run our dog for awhile off leash before walking him around the lake and hiking on a few trails. There is an amazing playground for kids with clean bathrooms close by. I love this dog park because the owners are very responsible and everyone is good about picking up after their dogs. We drive about 35 minutes just to come here. There is a great watering area with lots of trash bins close by so you don't need to carry fido's business around with you the whole time. The park has lots of trees and benches. There are two parking areas for the dog park--one just outside the park and one in the park. We like the one in the park because it makes walking to the lake and trails more accessible. Be sure to pack water for yourself because there isn't a fountain near the dog area. But there is one by the playground. The full park itself is huge so you could easily spend a full day here. And the old buildings make for a great background for a photo shoot. Especially with your dog! read more

Wow this place is amazing (first time going to "A" dog park). I decided on a whim to meet my friend at this dog park and I am glad I did! Funny part is, I thought the fenced-in area I was in was the BIGGER area... since it looked quite huge to me. But my friend comes along and says I'm in the smaller one (astonished look). I've always stayed away from experiencing a dog park because every Vet I've been to had always told me to stay clear of them. Not "completely" but highly not recommended since it gives a higher risk of fleas and ticks transferring from other dogs. Nonetheless, I've been missing out!! (As well as my dog). I was nervous throughout the whole hour I was there because I never un-leash her anywhere other than my old backyard and the potty area next to my new apartment (both fenced-in). She got a long with most dogs today except one. The other dog kind of tried to pick a fight with my dog. Luckily, nothing happened other than a few back-hops. She hasn't socialized with other dogs for over a year (basically since I adopted her from shelter) because I didn't have doggie playdates or go anywhere near other dogs. Now I have the opportunity to take her to dog parks c: she's super friendly and full of energy that needs to be released! Yay, for this doggie park! Oh one thing that I did not like... I know picking up poop after the dogs is super important and a must do but a couple (just two) elder ladies... were annoyingly... pushing my nerves. They both nudging to pick up our dogs poops.. (not like I would leave my dog's poop just sitting there, that's disrespectful). I know they were being hard on us because some people don't but no need to butt into our person business. read more

We drove down from Bellevue to explore the trails, lake, and dog park. Despite the drive, we were not disappointed. The park is an oasis in Tacoma for nature lovers, dog lovers, and athletes alike to come together in one place for a common purpose. Personally, I find it hard to think of a more friendly place. This is our gold standard... we compare all other parks to the fun we have here on a regular basis. 2 things to be aware of: 1. Sunday is greyhound morning - the local group pays to have the large park to themselves. There are signs posted, but I believe they clear out by 10 am or so. 2. There are a large number of 'intact' male dogs. My dogs don't have a problem with them... but both my husband and I have been menaced by them while their owners laugh it off. I would not bring a small child or an elderly small dog. Both the small dog area (~3 acres) and the large dog area (~8 acres) can fill up fast and dogs of all sized start to play in packs by the 10's. Think Discovery Park-minus the puget sound!!! There are SO many reasons why I love this park. First and foremost, it's exactly 1.3 miles from my new house so I get to jog here in the am. Now, here are the other perks: Waughop Lake. It is located in the SW corner of the park and is 0.9 miles around. It is paved. There are ducks, geese, turtles and tons of wildlife. They are all easy to reference as there are about 5 placards on stands around the lake listing the wildlife that are common in the area. I see Hawks on a daily basis. Trails. Tons and tons of trails. You can take a wooded trail, climbing trails with steep inclines, tall grass trails and there is even an area with wide open spaces with trails intertwined as well. It's beautiful. Plus, if you like bike riding/BMX trails, this park has those too with ginormous jumps. There is a huge dog park too. It is long and wide but sort of L shaped. It is off leash so you can let your fury friend get all that energy out, with tons of benches if he/she gets you too exhausted. On top of all this, For Steilacoom park has a great Annual festival. It just occurred and won't happen again until next June but if you are in the area you should check it out. read more

This is a great DOG PARK! I have a young dog that loves all beings, and loves running and playing with all her dog friends here. Unfortunately, people bring small kids into the off leash areas. This is no place for kids! Dogs are running fast, playing, going after that chuck-it ball and not caring that a small child is standing around. My dog knocked down a little girl and her parents were furious. They didnt even have a dog, just decided it was a good idea to come in to see the dogs run. I saw a mom with 4 kids ranging from just standing to 4 or 5, just hanging out in the smaller field, so we had to go someplace else to avoid her kids getting knocked down, or scratched. It is a big enough place to get away from problem owners and dogs with bad attitudes. read more

We've always loved the park for its size and abundance of dogs for socialization. However, despite their Bordetella vaccines, my beagles contracted Kennel cough. I'm not the first reviewer to say this. So, it's unfortunate that pet owners would bring their sick dogs to a public place. My dogs won't be back any time soon! (Especially because don't want to make anyone else's dog sick!!!). Please, if your dog has a slight cough or fever, don't take bring your dog to the dog park. Kennel cough affects dog differently. One of my dogs is a little more sleepy and slight runny nose and the other has coughing fits all day. Be kind to all the puppies out there if you suspect your dog might be sick. read more

We usually come to this park on the weekends since it's so far from Seattle, but it is definitely our favorite dog park. After visiting Magnuson and Grandview, Fort Steilacoom has by far the most space, grass, and friendly dogs that are looking to play with others. Most Seattle dog parks I've been to are gravel-based (rough on the paws), have little to no grass, and the dogs are either too aggressive or aren't interested in playing with other dogs (just fetch). There are negligent dog owners no matter which dog park you visit, but Fort Steilacoom seems to host the most responsible ones. Highly recommend! read more

Great off leash dog park with both a large fenced area spanning a few acres and a small half an acre section. Benches throughout the park make it easy to take a break and there are plenty of trees throughout for shade. In the small fenced area there are plenty of provided doggy bags and lots of benches. It is easy to keep track of your pooch here as it provides the perfect amount of room to let your pup roam while still being able to watch from a distance upon a bench. Double entry gates allow access at all points to prevent any escaping dogs and give you the opportunity to take off/put on leashes without worry. The large area is a huge space with trails traversing the entirety of the area. In one corner you will find a decent sized obstacle course with basic dog agility items. In the middle you will find a covered patio area with some tables (perhaps for picnicking?) but I find them not to be as suitable for any sort of lunch activities considering dogs often climb on top and hang out on the tables. My only complaint would have to be the dog watering area. While it is really nice to have a place to get some water for your dogs, often the faucet is left on and do to the poor drainage system it gets flooded in mud. While the dogs seem to love hanging out in the mud pit, the doggy parents are less amused. Overall this park is a beautiful place to take your companion with a great vibe and lots of friendly regulars where your dog will always have fun. read more

WATCH OUT FOR THE OLD MAN WITH WHITE HAIR AND HIS GREY OLD DOG. They always show up kinda late in the afternoon and his dog WILL attack yours and bite. The old man doesnt even care or keep his dog on a leash. Aggressive dogs arent even allowed in the park in the first place. Today this man's dog attacked my dog and bit him. Wish there was a number at the park somewhere to call to report people who clearly violate basic park rules. My dog is only 10lbs and very passive, he never growls or bites. This is a pretty amazing setup for the dog connoisseur. It is true that some people are confused about the two areas that are fenced off for the dogs to roam. There is a big and small park, but this has nothing to do with the size of the dog. It is more of the area that you and your friend are comfortable with. The big park is great for walking around the perimeter for exercise for both you and your friend. Close by is also a lake and other trails that would require a leash, but provide great scenery. A few tips: * Don't show up in fancy clothes or shoes that you would be upset if dirty, wet paws touched. (It's a dog park people). * Try to have patience while others are training their dogs. * It has only happened two times in five years, but occasionally the park is out of the doggie poop bags that they provide. I like to bring a backup just in case. * The parking can be tough on a beautiful day or a weekend, since everyone else in the area had the same idea as you. * If you are bringing children, they should be used to dogs. It's a dog park. There is a playground next door for children. * This one is very IMPORTANT! Do not leave your valuables in your vehicle. I have been at the park while a woman had her purse stolen out of her car in broad daylight. The smaller dog park seems to attract more crime than parking off Angle Rd. in the back of the larger dog park. * This one is also VERY IMPORTANT! The park is very close to Western State Hospital and there are patients that get day passes and such. Always think of your safety. read more

I was taking a scenic route and I remembered from reading up on the fort and the area that there is a doggie park! There is an entrance on Steilacoom Blvd and 87th. The dog bark (park) is inside the huge park. Just follow the dogs or look at the park map! Oh-speaking of dogs- I remember commenting to myself that I have never seen so many Great Danes in one place! I think Great Danes are beautiful dogs(aren't all dogs beautiful)- and sweet tempered! Anyway- this park is huge. I do not know how big it is- I know its much more than 10 acres! There is an area for small dogs and general dog park. There are trees but I loved the open area. I was at the park during prime time (after work) and I did not feel that the park was crowded. I also love the fact that I could walk around the park and take in the scenery! We always have a great time at this dog park. Being from Texas, where the dog culture is way different, this park was a big surprise but in a good way! Three separate fenced areas (although not necessarily for different sized dogs, except for the smallest area), with the big part being HUGE. There's a small agility course in the largest area that I use to work on obedience when the park is empty. Plenty of trees, ome benches here and there, and a covered sitting area. Only one watering hole, so it would be wise to bring your own water in the warmer months. My 7 year old beagle, who wasn't properly socialized, got the hang of things pretty quickly and now lets puppies climb all over her without as much as a grumble- but prefers hunting in the briar patch with the other beagles over playing. Then, on the other end of the spectrum is my coonhound who has to say hi to every dog he sees. I would recommend that you only bring your dogs if they are spayed/neutered. Every scuffle I've seen has been caused by an unaltered male putting his nose in places he shouldn't (literally). Plus it's just downright annoying when an unaltered male won't leave a fixed female alone. Have respect for other people's dogs, and if you see that they are trying to get away from your dog GRAB HIM PLEASE. Same goes to those who let their dogs mount others and think it's funny, it's not- it's rude and you are further reinforcing bad manners. I broke my dog of that behavior in a week, you can too. I (a 115lb girl) had to pick my 70lb dog up and walk 50 feet with him just to get away from a rottweiler and a pit mix who were trying to assert dominance. All while their owners were laughing at their dogs who were jumping on me to get to my dog. No. Don't be that person. End rant. read more

This is a great dog park in the middle of a great park. I really appreciate the small dog and large dog areas. Well maintained areas, doggie bags available, and lots of non-fenced paths if you just want to walk and explore. The people and dogs were mostly well behaved. This was the first dog park we took our dog too, so it was really nice to have the smaller side to make sure he didn't just bolt (or if he did, it wasn't too far to run). There were many people and dogs in and out of the different sides, but all courteous and following the rules so no one slipped out. There were water fountains and trash cans scattered around, which is a major bonus. It's kid-friendly, assuming that your kids like dogs (I feel that should be a duh statement, but I saw two kids bawling their eyes out because a dog walked up to them and licked them). This dog park is AMAZING. There are three or four large fenced off areas that are all linked together, so if your dog is not getting along with another dog you can just move on haha. Fresh water and poop bags supplied. There is a meadow in the far back park with a huge open space and trees everywhere. My dog was loving it! Everyone keeps a pretty good eye on their pup and is respectful to others. This is a safe and fun place for our dog to play! Totally worth the 40 minute drive from Federal Way every once in a while, just wish it was closer. Also, pictures do not do this place justice. This dog park is great. I love that there are three different sectioned off dog parks for every type of dog. The size of the biggest one is super great for long walks and even has equipment for them to run on. Sadly, last week I witnessed a man viciously abusing his two german shepherds. He hit them extremely hard, multiple times with the chuck it he was carrying, as well as picking them up by their necks and almost strangling them. I even heard him call his woman friend bad names, subsequently abusing/screaming at both humans and dogs. I used to come here alone with my dogs, and walk, yet now I feel extremely anxious and unsafe, having had a horrible panic attack the day I witnessed this and had to leave for home. I did not want my dogs to be attacked by the abused animals, or have to witness more of the abuse. This all being said, the dog park itself, is very nice. read more

I want to give this park 5 stars, but unfortunately the last two times I have taken my dogs to this park they have gotten kennel cough and this time worms. I just can't bring myself to take my dogs back to this park. The park itself is absolutely amazing! The area coverage, divided parks for either breed size or roaming room and even obstacles and a maze for them to play on. I had taken my dogs there a few times--before they built the off leash areas. My dogs loved it then. They've since passed away, but I think they would've loved it even more being able to run around off leash. Now I take my husband's dog there and she likes it. She tends to shy away from other dogs. She's people friendly though. There are other pet owners there that don't watch their dogs and then you have the large breed owners bringing in their dogs to the small breeds area. Not only are these owners disobeying the rules (they rarely clean up their dogs' messes, let them run amok and not watch them, allow them to attack other dogs and people, etc.), but they're selfish and abusive towards you if you ask them if they're aware of the rules or to leave to the other side. The park itself is fine--it's a huge place good for other activities. But I don't go there that often anymore, because of the idiots aforementioned. When I do, I walk the dog around the pond or use the trails instead. read more

Stay away from dog parks. You are increasing your dogs chances ten times for picking up diseases, like cryptosporidium or numerous other toxic bacteria. I should know because it happened to my dog at fort Steilacoom. If you frequent the dog park better get a stool test done! On your dog of course. Make sure it's the PAR Stool test and it goes to a lab to be done PAR Stool test is considered the gold standard of stool tests. read more

Hands down, the best dog park around! At 22 acres, it's a dog-lover's heaven! I love bringing my dog here - she can run, sniff butts, pee, chase other dogs and steal balls from other dogs and by the time we are done, she is pooped!!! The dog park is comprised of two sections - the main, larger section and section for smaller dogs such as your cute little silky terrier. Personally, this is just a walk down the street for me and I've become a bit spoiled by it. Knowing that if I move away from here, I most likely won't find a park remotely close to Fort Steilacoom unless I go to Marymoor. If you are in the Tacoma/Lakewood area and you have a 4-legged best friend, visit Fort Steilacoom! You won't regret it! Oh yeah, please clean up after your buddy.
