I had used Fortuna construction previously for the siding on the front of my house. I was so happy with the outcome of the siding that I hired Fortuna construction to enclose my deck. First of all let me tell you that unlike other companies John, the owner is who comes out to provide a quote and do the work himself. This is a "one man" construction company, but the way John works one would think he has a a large staff behind him. This is one of the most HONEST, diligent, and precise individuals that I have had the pleasure to get to know and work on my home.My house has an upper and lower deck, when I first asked John about the possibility of enclosing the lower deck and that I wanted it as "bugproof" as possible, instead of either telling me that it could not be done or quoted me a price for a kit to install (as others did); he took measurements and said "let me go home and do some research". He came back with a quote and drawing which I will tell you looks just like the finished product. My home was orginally built 20+ years ago, my upper deck had never felt solid or safe and quite frankly moved when you stepped foot upon it. John went right to work to make this safe before embarking on the enclosure. I am in awe of the quality of work that John performs. He provides insight, suggestions and ways to improve what you have originally thought would be the best way to do things. All of his suggestions I accepted because quite frankly they were great suggestions and he is the expert and I trust him. The enclosure is more than I ever dreamed of! I cannot even describe in words how absolutely beautiful this is. I will be using Fortuna Construction again for all my future home improvement projects. On a side note, John is one of the most thorough and thoughtful contractors I have had the pleasure to know and quite frankly my family misses seeing him everyday. Overall the experience went well. John is a quality builder, has a great work ethic, and pays great attention to detail. I feel that we have a very well built addition, and they did a great job. They also did a wonderful job of putting vinyl siding on the entire cottage. Much of this was done in tough conditions. Our cottage is out of the normal area of work for Fortuna Construction. John asked if they could park a travel trailer at our cottage so that they would not have to drive an hour back and forth each day. We were happy to have them do that. As we got into December, the weather got quite cold, windy and miserable. To their credit, they continued to work in all kinds of weather and finished on time. We invited them to use 2 of our bedrooms in the cottage, but they would not accept this offer. I think things got pretty miserable in the trailer. We have always enjoyed watching our remodel projects as they progressed. We were at our cottage some days each week during the first 3 or 4 weeks of the project. It was a joy to watch the progress and to be available for questions. The rapport with John and Steve seemed good and we were enjoying seeing our dream unfold. In December we were asked to stay away so that we would not be an interruption to John and Steve. This was a disappointment to us, but we complied. I do understand that it was more comfortable for the guys to use the bathroom in the cottage without us being there. Steve in particular was very gracious and appreciative of what we tried to do to make things more comfortable during a difficult job. At the end of the day we are happy with the quality work that was done. John, as the owner, is honorable, and does quality work. He was respectful of our money and made several suggestions to reduce the cost. read more

We hired Fortuna Construction to remove our deck and build an addition in its place. He built a 10 x 16 addition with 3 windows, exterior door, and the most beautiful French doors that he hand-stained, along with all of the trim, in which he worked hard to match our existing trim color. He designed it to look like it was part of the original house, inside and out. The quality of John's work is exceptional. He is extremely detail-oriented (even in his quotes), a perfectionist in his work. The high quality of his workmanship shows that he takes pride in what he does. He is dependable, and kept us up to date daily on the progress of the project. His work ethic is outstanding--he put in many long days in the summer heat and humidity. From the beginning John made sure that we were getting exactly what we wanted. He provided updates at every step along the way, noting where he was able to save us money, and ensuring that we were happy with the work being done. As John saved money, he passed the savings back on to us, either by going above and beyond the initial estimate or by reducing the estimate. Because of John's honesty and attention to the budget, we were able to get two extra doors, an extra light fixture, a new staircase, and a couple of extra odds and ends upstairs done that were not included on the initial estimate for the same price as he originally quoted us.
