I have been living in Richmond for about 5 years now and I think this is the best Chinese food place that I have been to so far. My friend is obsessed with this place and encouraged me to try. I am very simple when it comes to Chinese food. All I care about is the egg roll, fried rice, lomein and sometimes I will try other things like orange chicken and others but as long as those 3 things are good, I am sold. I have ordered pick up from this place twice. The last time I was there, I went with 7 other people to dine in. We were the only people in there, most people do pick ups. Everyone loved their food. I got a fried rice without veggies and spicy. It was really good. I wasn't a fan of their fried chicken. Their egg roll is probably the best egg roll in the world to me. I tried Chinese donut for the first time here, it was really good as well. I tried others food and all the food were pretty tasty. The owner was nice, he came up to talk to us and to make sure everything was okay. I do feel like they give you less food when you eat there than pick up, especially with the fried rice. I keep looking for good old American style Chinese food. I had hopes but once again, I'm disappointed. Wonton soup, overcooked wontons, no green onions, no pork slivers, egg roll coated in grease, shrimp in lobster sauce was like another soup although it did have plenty of shrimp. Hubby had sweet and sour chicken and it was only sweet and sour sauce, with plenty of chicken and nothing else. The fried dumplings were a gluey mess. Sigh. Best Won Ton soup in town! I order carry out and the food is delicious. The won ton soup is still hot when I got it home and tasted fantastic, both the broth and the won tons. The won ton to soup ratio is perfect. The shrimp rolls are delicately seasoned and just melt in your mouth. My hubby enjoyed chicken with cashew nuts , saying everything was fresh and tasted good. Beware of raw/undercooked meat. Got take out from here this evening. Got home and the shrimp in the shrimp fried rice was clearly not cooked. Went back to the restaurant and the manager yelled at us and tried to say that the shrimp comes pre cooked so it's impossible that it's raw. But the shrimp was clearly translucent and not cooked. After the angry manager being continually rude we eventually got a refund. So disappointing because we have been here many times and gotten the shrimp fried rice and it was good! But unfortunately we won't be returning since we don't want to mess with undercooked food and management that was so rude. read more

Fortune Bowl is my favorite Chinese food in the area. Everything is fresh, and special requests are welcome and are no problem. We usually eat in. The owner and staff are super friendly, accommodating, and very attentive. The restaurant and restroom are clean. The portions are large. We always leave with takeaway from our meal. The food is traditional Chinese-American. It is cooked perfectly, not over cooked or slimey--no over abundance of corn starch or salt or soy sauce or sugar. I've eaten from every section on the menu, and I've liked everything. Meals start out with fried noodles, like chips. I am not a fan of fried noodles, so I cannot speak on those. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming. They make you feel that your business matters and that you are the most important person in the place. I travel often and have had my share of Chinese food. Fortune Bowl ranks near the top of the best in the Mid-Atlantic and certainly the best in metro RVA. The food is consistent no matter if you are there early in the evening or 15 minutes before closing. I tend to do take out or delivery which always seems very fast to me. If I could change one thing- it would be to have the staff ask if you need sauce packets before they fill the bag with a good handful of them. I made an online order and I had never been here before. When I walked in there was a funny smell, but the guy was at the counter and I could see my order. I went ahead and paid got it, so I said let me taste it and I ate what appeared to be chicken and it had a sour taste to it and it was very chewy and I spit it out. Great service but the place was nearly empty for Christmas Day (one other family came). This place is a favorite spot for my best friend who came...and he basically recommends anything. Wife had General Tso chicken, I had Kung Pao Shrimp, one kid had Beef Lo Mein (beef was decent), other kids had Sweet and Sour Chicken and friend had some sort of Beef (which was good). Got take out from here two days ago, because it was close to hospital where my partner was having surgery. I ordered the Sesame chicken and shrimp spring rolls. The chicken seemed very old, dry and stringy. I questioned even if it was safe to eat by the looks of it although I was starving so I ate about 20%, of dish. I did not enjoy this food at all. I ordered shrimp egg foo young with brown sauce (instead of gravy). One word...YUCK. Two of the three egg foo young rounds were BURNT. The brown sauce was devoid of flavor. It was watery and separated with floating oil, not thick/almost gelatinous like the brown sauce that goes with beef and broccoli. I couldn't eat it. Food is absolutely delicious...everything you want in Americanized Chinese cuisine. The service, however, is very questionable. 1. The owners have a young child they care for & she and some of the older teenage family members are always in the restaurant playing. (I didn't think this was a big deal until I noticed the child's pampers, wipes, and other baby permanently stored on 1 of the tables in the main dining area. 2. I watched the server retrieve my "to-go" box with his unwashed hands (he had just prepared someone's ticket) by grabbing it from the inside. Yuck! 3. My husband left our takeout meal there one night because upon driving up one of the teenage boys was standing at a table lifting his shirt up to show the others in the restaurant his front side...um, not proper food service etiquette. But nevermind that. Let me tell you that Fortune Bowl did not disappoint. I ordered a few dishes because I wanted to have a little of this and that. We ordered the shrimp egg foo young with fried rice, chicken and broccoli and vegetable lo mein. I know some will say that all Chinese food taste the same but it really doesn't. Fortune Bowl was super tasty. It wasn't too greasy or heavy and was perfectly seasoned. The egg foo young patties were both crisp and juicy at the same damn time. The chicken. And broccoli was piping hot and that brown sauce was next level. My mouth had been watering lo mein that entire day so I had to oblige. It, too was very good. Overall, I would definitely go back to fortune bowl. It is literally five minutes from my house. If you haven't tried them out, please do so. read more

Scrumptious Chinese food on the pricey side. This place isn't extremely expensive but for informal Chinese food it is in the upper 1/3 of prices. This place has my favorite fried rice - they put the right amount of onions and peas in the rice to make it delicious all around. Our favorite items are: Orange chicken (this is my favorite place to get this item in 10 mile area); Pork fried rice (favorite place in all of Richmond for this item); Duck (expensive but plentiful - watch out it can be overcooked occasionally) Hot and sour soup (overpriced but a quality item) Egg drop soup (overprice but a quality item) Depending on our work schedule we either pick-up Chinese from Yen Ching on the way back home or order from Fortune Bowl for delivery. I think this place is comparable to Yen Ching. I live close to the Fortune Bowl and they delivery very quickly - I can't comment on how they would deliver if you live outside of Brandermill. If you live in this area they have wonderful free delivery and the food comes nice and hot. They aren't afraid to put meat in things so if you are a vegetarian make sure to ask that they leave it out or if specific items have meat in them. This place is much nicer than the choke and puke cheap Chinese restaurant in the Food Lion's shopping complex Chang Sheng. You want a cheaper place you can go to Change Sheng but you will get exactly what you pay for (maybe a little less than you bargained for in quality but they make up for it in quantity). read more

I've been to the Big Three in this area: Yen Ching, Fortune Bowl, and Lin's. All are great, but for the price Fortune Bowl wins the gold medal. In my humble opinion, For about $7.00 I can get Sesame Chicken with rice and a spring roll (not the big fat one, the skinny melt-in-your-mouth one...and I have had homemade rolls by a freaking Thai grandmother...not as good as hers, but close for a restaurant - BAM!). The amount of food was enormous for lunch, the chicken pieces were huge with minimal breading and lot's of meat. Not overdone and gristly like some places. Rice is pretty standard (because if a Chinese restaurant can't cook rice right...well that's just insane). Just for fun I ordered the same thing from all three over the last few weeks and Fortune Bowl gets my Yelp love. read more

Customer service is important. I ordered chinese for my elderly folks for dinner and after working a 12 hour day I was hungry but all I ordered for me was steamed dumplings. Well, guess what item was left out. 40 bux later I am eating a tv dinner. Their response was that they couldn't credit me for the dumplings because I ordered online but they would put a credit to my phone number so that the next time I order I get a free order of dumplings. This place is great, and they are doing a good job of protecting their customers! Why we like Fortune Bowl so much... First time we ate there the owner, Chen, treated me like we were family. They have delicious fresh food, very fair prices, happy helpful service, and a very clean restaurant. Then we moved to Powhatan, so we hadn't been back for maybe a year. Went back two weeks ago and Chen recognizes me right away. Amazing. Went back again tonight and was impressed to see the new set-up that protects their customer. We ordered a take-out dinner with 4 different dishes. We were told it would be ready in 10 minutes and it was! The restaurant is closed off bc of coronavirus, but when I arrived I found my order waiting on a table inside the door. The meals are cooked and set out for customers with a pass-through window off the lobby. Chen was there to greet me, wearing a mask and gloves, and standing behind a plastic barrier for the safety of both his staff and his customers. It's no surprise Fortune Bowl is rated #1 on Yelp. We have Chinese food closer to where we live. But I am glad to make the drive to Fortune Bowl when we can. read more

I gave them a second chance. No change, they continue to get my order wrong. The food was also bland and in small portions. I spoke to the manager about the continuing problem, she didn't seem to be concerned that I have become disappointed and when I informed her that I am considering not coming there anymore she just said "Okay." I gave them the opportunity to fix an order in the past which was delivered. I tipped the delivery driver well. But the food was poor quality and I called asking them to fix it. I ordered the Kung pao chicken, and it was nice and temperature warm, but I've never had that dish with absolutely no hot peppers I ate it, but will ask the cook to please add the hot peppers.
