Torquil Pottery is not just one more fine establishment placed in Henley-in-Arden, it's part of heritage of the city and a visit to its family business is certainly educative more than anything. My husband and I were received by the owner of the gallery, Carey that together with her brother Paul keep the their parents' legacy, the gallery that was opened in 1963 as a pottery shop by Reg and Meg Moon. It was the gallery assistant Andrea who explained all history behind this fascinating construction while we were checking all potteries, ceramics, painting and sculptures placed at the Gallery Upstairs, another fine room in this site. The artists are carefully chosen by the gallery and Andrea has told us that they usually receive several requests from everywhere artists expecting to be part of their very much peculiar catalogue. The Torquil Pottery and Upstairs Gallery has works with prices between £50 and £12750 ( a beautiful sculpture designed by Helen Sinclair) and some of these works are placed in a beautiful medieval garden that can be visited and appreciated by the public. Still as part of the house there is a studio where pottery classes are placed weekly and even if you are not interested in arts in general, Torquil is definitely another worth visiting place in Henley-in-Arden.

They do manage to pack in a lot of things in the tiny space, but unfortunately it's so small that you can feel the eyes of the staff person boring into your back as you try to have a look around. And in my case, the lady behind the register was not very nice at all. She gave me dubious looks and hurried me as if she thought I was going to steal something. Not very comfortable experience. I didn't really mind the small space as much as the unfriendly customer service. Even if they did have what I want, it put me off coming back. From what I did manage to see, before I was made to feel completely unwelcome, things are more expensive than you can get elsewhere and not that much stock because of the limited space. So if you're looking for something specific, you might not find it here. But if what you want isn't at W.H. Smith, at least you have the option of looking in here..

Christopher's work is also on show at the Burford Garden Centre, in the cafe - and over a coffee there we decided to talk to him about a commissioned piece. We were invited to Christopher's studio at Crown Farm, which is full of half-completed pieces, whirls of metal and sculpted trees and animals, and Christopher went through with us about what we wanted. The piece was completed and ready for G's birthday party, and mixes the colours we've used in our living room, along with different textures and a fantastic swirl of steel along the front of the canvas. For an individual and unique piece, Christopher's pricing is pretty good (our artwork cost us less than £400) and a small price to pay for something this individual.

I found Paul working from his fathers wedding photography studio and got him to do a few frames for me and realised how much easier life could be. paul has produced consistantly good quality frames with a service which is second to none. He has always tried to ensure deadlines are met and that I don't have to put in too much effort and the results are always great. He isn't the cheapest but he's not much more than others and sometimes it is worth a bit extra for a better service. Highly recommended!

There are cards and postcards, small framed prints, portraits, landscapes, big original art of all sorts and all manner of other ephemera, not to mention Rob's theme nights in the nearby Barn Restaurant.
