Hot Dog Heaven is a Fort Lauderdale institution. Founded in 1979 by Chicago natives Barry and…read morePamela Star, the tiny stand brought an authentic taste of the Windy City to South Florida. They served authentic Vienna Beef Chicago with mustard, relish, pickles, tomatoes, celery salt, and sport peppers on a poppy seed bun. In the 1980s, they purchased the modest 780-square-foot building that still houses the restaurant today. Back then, a Chicago dog cost just $1.45. When the Stars finally retired, it looked like Hot Dog Heaven might disappear forever. Fortunately, Joe Barra stepped in to keep the legend alive. Rather than reinventing the place, he kept everything exactly the way people loved it. The menu remains a tribute to classic Chicago street food. You can still order a dog topped with mustard, grilled onions, and sauerkraut, or go for chili and chopped onions. If you want the full Illinois experience, there's the classic Chicago dog piled high with mustard, onions, neon relish, tomatoes, pickles, celery salt, and sport peppers. The menu also includes Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches, sausage and peppers heroes, burgers, and chicken sandwiches. I ordered the Polish sausage with mustard, grilled onions, and hot peppers. The fries arrived hot, crispy, and perfectly crinkle-cut the way God intended. After I finished my sandwich, only one thought came to mind: Dang, that was good. The bun really makes it. This is old school comfort food done right. Prices aren't what they were in 1979. My Polish sausage and fries came to about $13, but it was worth every penny. Inside is tight with stools at the counter along the window, but there are three tables out front where you can enjoy your meal while watching the parade of traffic roar down Sunrise Boulevard. For over 40 years Hot dog Heaven has been serving up exactly what the community is craving. When was the last time you visited this iconic stand?

I did a quick search of the area and Hot Dog Heaven, a place I had marked to visit some day, was near by. Online it looked like you could order ahead, but decided to try my luck ordering in person. I arrived to a place that had a handful of customers all in different phases of ordering or waiting for their food. I'm sure it helped that I was hungry, but I ordered fast. 2 dogs to go and the philly steak egg rolls. I had asked, "what's good to eat in the car on the way home?",, a couple people said the egg rolls. They were right. I don't know how they make them, but I would swear they were made in house. Great beef. The hot dogs made it safely home. a tasty Chicago dog and a Polish sausage. the latter was the winner, with its shrooms and sautéed onions. I'm surprised it took me this long to stop in, but it won't be long till I'm back.

We started coming here after playing 18 holes nearby. It stood out quick as it has strong towny bar vibes with quality drinks and service too. And its open early so perfect for a pre-noon beverage after a good round on the course. We get in usually about 1045. There's usually close to a dozen people also celebrating, maybe just that its the weekend. The vibes are always cheery. The other day we came in and there were dozens of locals having a pot luck lunch. They insisted we grab some food. I have gotten food from the kitchen a few times. If its not to busy the cook comes out for a bit. It's the best to just ask him straight up, "what's cooking good today", and he will tell you. His Philly is excellent. I did see it on a list the other day somewhere that it was one of the top dive bars in South Florida. I concur.

Worth eating are Big Dog's tater tots so crisp and good. I had the burger which was fine too. Service is very personalized and it feels somewhat like a beach shack and with patrons sipping their beers with the ocean breezes (full disclosure Big Dog is not on the beach the atmosphere just feels like it). It's a fun experience.
