The store has a nice selection of wines, and Kenny knows how to get you a good wine for a good price. He also has a good selection of spirits as well. The store is right next to the Tops supermarket, and is a good convenient location. Go check it out you won't. Be disappointed. read more

Several friends and I recently spent a weekend in New Paltz and stopped in Fox and Hound to purchase a few bottles of wine. We found the store to be well laid out and the staff was extremely friendly. One of the gentlemen working there (possibly the owner but I can't recall his name) asked if we needed help and briefly explained how the store was organized. While my friends browsed the inventory and selected a few bottles, I asked him to recommend a local winery if we only had time to visit one for a tasting. He recommended Whitecliff Vineyard which we visited the next day...and it was amazing! This store is conveniently located, the staff is very helpful and the prices seem fair. A+ read more

This store is tucked away in the Stop and Shop plaza, but it's one that you shouldn't gloss over if you're in the area. My favorite part is the decor; if you're a fan of foxes or dogs, you'll find plenty of cute statues and paintings hidden throughout the store! The staff here is incredibly knowledgable and friendly; I needed a wine to cook with that paired well with poultry, and the owner's suggestion was perfect for my recipe. I've been in since then, and every time the store is clean and presentable, and the staff helpful and wonderful. They also offered local wines as well, like Brotherhood, and have a variety of other products offered by nearby wineries and distilleries. The prices are also competitive to other businesses in the area, especially with their local offerings. It's a local business worth your patronage. read more

Ken (recent new owner) brings his excellent knowledge of wine to the selection stocked here now. The shop is much improved since its original manifestation, which was very hit-or-miss. Lots of terrific, sometimes unusual (French, dry Malbec, anyone, at $10 a bottle?) choices here, a definite go-to if you're looking for wine in New Paltz. read more

Do NOT go in with a new New York State Drivers License. They are not familiar with it and will turn you down, even if you are well over 21. I've had good experiences here until my wife was turned down somewhat rudely by the staff. They are professionals and checking IDs is part of their job. That being the case you would think they would know what a Driver's License from their own state looks like. It really is a shame because I've had good experiences here, but when you mess up you mess up. They messed up. read more

I recently came to this store for the first time, and was immediately impressed not just by the selection but by how attractive it is in inside. It uses very pretty dark wood moldings and flooring which gives a nice warm feeling to it. It was also decorated for halloween in a very fun way. I'm a fan of the bubbly, so I basically meandered straight to that section, and was very happy with the wide selection available. I was able to buy a Spanish cava that I've never tried before and it was very nice. Prices were average, no more or less than I've seen in the area. Small-to-medium sized liquor stores typically take one of two different styles of presenting their inventory. One is to maximize shelving and stock as many different types of liquor as possible. The other is to be more open and give space to specific items. Fox And Hound uses the second method, prominently displaying a number of above-average wines and liquors each in its own display area. I did like the selection of wines they presented in this way, and I did appreciate that they had a number of local Tuthilltown liquors in the appropriate sections. But there's trade-offs. One is that you might not necessarily find something a little less common that you wanted. The other is that if the inventory is spaced out, are they doing anything to keep a profit, such as perhaps raising prices slightly? The answer to that was "yes," for a few of the things I checked, but not everything. They also have a bargain table in the center of the front room with featured items at a couple of dollars off. The staff here are knowledgeable and friendly, but while I was there, they tended to stand behind the counter rather than walk around the store asking customers if they needed any help, i.e., you had to go to them. Still, this is a charming liquor store and one at which I'd shop for wine and liquor in general when I'm in New Paltz. read more

In this moment of COVID-19 the response of businesses and owners truly differentiates those who serve the community and those who are just looking after themselves. Kenny and his team at Fox and Hound have always offered great service and advice in the store but last week the service went above and beyond. They allowed me to call in an order, picked everything I wanted off the shelves for me, boxed it up, put the charge on an account they had set up for me and delivered my purchases to the trunk of the car without me having to lift a finger. In this era of "social distancing" (and when a stocked liquor cabinet is essential whenever attempting to watch the news) this is a very valuable, nearly drive-thru service. read more

I'm surprised the reviews are split on this place - Fox and Hound is great. I work in the wine industry and these people do their very best to provide a unique selection and they stand behind the products in their shop. Their staff has always been very helpful and they have a great liquor selection too. It is small and you won't find every name brand, but give them a wine you like, or style you like, a price point, and they will help you find something wonderful. Just go. They are great. read more

Just dropped in to pick up a bottle of wine real quick as we were in the Stop and Shop parking lot. Never mind that a bottle of wine that costs $9.99 at The Merchant in Kingston or $11.99 at New Paltz Wine and Spirits...goes for $15.99 @ Fox & Hound Wine & Spirits. The kid working the register didn't acknowledge me as I walked up to the counter to check out. He scanned the bottle, said "$15.99", swiped my card and that the extent of what he said. No "hello," "thank you" "good-bye"...seriously? The store was empty. The kid wasn't doing anything. Great customer service guys... read more

I've seen a few in my time, and I can't recall a more attractive looking wine store. Selection is pretty good (better on wine than spirits maybe) and prices are fair. Not super cheap, but I haven't yet found a place that is... But I don't know what that other reviewer is talking about, because what keeps me coming back is this place's staff. I think I've interacted with everyone who works there at one point or another in recent times and I've been very impressed. Besides being friendly, they seem to know their stuff and always seem happy to point out new things. Maybe you've gotta be friendly to receive friendly? Who knows... The other stores in town are fine, but if you shop at the Stop and Shop already I can't imagine why you'd go anywhere else. read more

This place screams yuppie wine store and after five years I am surprised they're still in business. They must be doing something right with the weekend warriors and yuppie locals because they provide very little that the other stores don't in regards to typical patrons of a liquor store and their prices are on average 1 to 10 dollars more expensive. I've never felt their wine prices are competitive but what got them the lower rating is that their liquor selection is abysmal compared to the other stores. New Paltz is across the river from the CIA, we have amazing local distilleries popping up all around, and yet their affordable liquor selection is what you would expect at a Liquor store outside of a state campground at 9 pm on a Sunday night. Nestled in the middle of the Craft Distillery and Whiskey movements this location can't seem to figure out that there are more options in this world then Absolute, Jim Beam, Tangueray. and Morgan for someone who isn't willing to spend 65+ on a 750ml bottle. The sign on their door says "We Only Look Expensive", and that's bullshit. They only offer affordable generic typical options, if you want something worthwhile without breaking the bank this isn't the place for you. If you want a cheap 750ml of Jim Beam for your camping trip into the Gunks they'll work but they'll still be one to two dollars more expensive then just down the road. After five years of flirting with this place and trying to find its charm I still haven't seen it. read more

I know this place is modeled as a kind of innovative liquor store that appeals to the more sophisticated wine drinkers in New Paltz, but it's really just a veneer. Hiding behind the faux kitchen in the back that occasionally offers tastings mixed with non local food is a business that doesn't have much to offer the consumer beyond a typical, limited selection liquor store. The most amazing thing about this store is that the Hudson Valley is seeing a resurgence in craft bourbon, rye whiskey, and local craft whiskeys. It is one of the most popular alcohol trends in the nation, and people are traveling to our area to experience the tastes. But. despite this teh Fox and the Hound's selection is so limited in whiskey's that unless you are willing to spend $60 bucks on a 'chance' bottle you wont be walking out with anything exciting (think Jim Beam as your best U.S. option, Jameson your best affordable Irish). Today was the last day I will be going into this store for it has nothing on In Good Taste which is only a few blocks down the road. read more
