Chocolate with 'churros' small, length of a doughnut-like pastry is a traditional Catalan way to start the day, and different cafes vie with each other to sell the best chocolate. The drinking chocolate here is hard to beat it's delicious, not too sweet, and so thick it is more of a dark chocolate custard than a drink. They also sell an extensive range of sweet and savoury pastries and salads here, making it a popular venue for a light lunch.
As well as a large pavement seating area at the front, there is a series of interior rooms, including a lovely conservatory and a small, secluded rear garden, complete with a small grotto and pond, home to some friendly terrapins.
The interior is a good example of the Catalan 'Modernista' movement, whose best known exponent is Gaudi. It's decorated with colourful art nouveau motifs, and the colourful, Moorish-influenced tiling associated with Spain.
