The first thing we saw upon entering the museum is the massive ship known as the Fram. After going up the stairs to the upper levels, we realized that there is ramp that allows people to actually enter the ship. We had no idea that we would be allowed on, so this was a nice surprise. After looking around on deck we went down the steps to explore the ship. The crew rooms, store houses, dining hall and engine room were all made into beautiful exhibits. There are still books, tools, equipment, and clothing items left from the ships voyages. A real treasure for me was the vintage Singer sewing machine, it was stunning. Seeing the ships diesel engine was also really cool. In the halls of the building that surround the ship, there is a lot of information on the crew, the Greenland voyage, and much more. There are a few places for kids to enjoy, like the polar room. As far as accessibility, there is an elevator and ramp, though I only saw stairs that lead below deck. The stairs that are built into the ship are steep, so caution is needed. We bought the 2 museum combination ticket and I think it was worth the price for what we got. read more

We had seen very positive reviews of this museum so we hopped on a ferry from pier 3 in Oslo and ventured out to this area. It was quite busy given it was a Saturday at the height of tourist session. We were able to get a good discount and got the combo ticket to also visit the Kon Tiki museum next door. The museum is quite good and did a nice job of telling not only the story of the Fram and it's many expeditions but the story of other related explorers and explorations to the Artic and Antarctica. Most of this was new to me so it was quite educational. The two ships were fun to walk through and the many displays contained a ton of information (frankly way more than I could absorb). They do have a small snack area but it has a pretty basic selection if you are counting on it for lunch. Overall a worthwhile visit. read more

The Fram ship was used in polar explorations. It is the world's strongest wooden ship and is on display in this museum. One can walk through many parts of the ship. If you are prone to seasickness, be aware that at times rolling seas are projected on the walls and ceiling of the building housing the ship. Informative displays are arranged throughout the ship and the building. I'm not sure if it is worth the price of admission as our entrance was covered by our Oslo city tour. Right across the parking lot is the Kon Tiki museum. read more

Excellent museum, be sure to stand on the ship during the Stormy seas for an almost 3D experience. The displays were very thorough and informative, I learned a lot about Arctic exploration. We spent 1 and a half hours here and certainly didn't read everything. Walk through the tunnel to the display of aviation history at the North Pole and take in the 5 minute simulation of the first flight to the North Pole, complete with vibrating seats. read more

Probably the best and most interesting museum in Oslo that we visited! It tells the story of the Fram, which is a ship instrumental in both artic and antarctic exploration, detailing everything about the journeys, crew, impacts, and all related. The most impressive is that they have the actual ship in the museum, where you are able to go inside and see all the decks and the places where the crew would have been living in. There is also a separate connected building that similarly displays the Gjoa. This area is less traversed, but it was still a very interesting read! Would highly recommend trying to fit this into your schedule! read more

The Fram Museum is both weird and wonderful, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the insides and outsides of two huge ships and learn about their amazing expeditions. Even if you're not a history buff, it's well worth a visit. I'll be honest, I had no idea what I was going to when my husband wanted to go to the Fram Museum but I'm glad we went. Tickets were decently priced and there's enough there to keep you busy for a couple of hours. We went during the week and found it to be easy to get through without too many other guests. You'll read about different trips/groups that have made their way across the world along with the race between groups. There are two big ships that seemed to be built into the foundation of the museum. As you walk through them you start to get an idea of what life was like aboard. I found it interesting to read about the failed trips and to see all of the artifacts from past trips. Honestly I learned a lot considering I had no idea what I was getting myself into. There is also a smaller theater inside that had about a 15 minute video to watch, check it out if you can. The gift shop had a lot of options but they seemed highly priced, I regret not getting the item I was looking at though. I would recommend checking it out if you have the time. read more

We went to this museum because we had a Stockholm pass, so we figured, why not? I enjoyed the movie that they played, and learning more about the explorations to the Arctic. I wasn't a huge fan on how they portrayed the native tribes they encountered who helped them, but I guess this was a very eurocentric view of the world kind of musuem. read more

Voted the best museum in Norway, the Fram tells the story of Norwegian Polar Expeditions. The museum features the actual ship that visitors can walk around on. The ship is HUGE! When you first enter the Museum, you should proceed to the museum theater to watch a short film on the expeditions. The film is shown in an Auditorium with movie theater style seating. Initially when I walked into the Fram I was totally unimpressed, but that feeling soon changed once I took a minute to explore. As soon as you walk in the Fram Polar Ship is smack dab in the middle of the museum and takes of, naturally, a large portion of the museum. Like others have mentioned, there is much more to see than the ship, although you've gotta check it out too. There are fun exhibits such as sled pulling where you put your body to the test as a sled dog as well as gun shooting exercise as well. Various exhibits throughout the museum which discuss the polar explorations which are very educational, even an extremely cold walk through exhibit which talks about the cold temperatures and the lost lives of those on these expeditions. Then there is the magnificent Fram Polar Ship, which I didn't realize at first, but you can totally walk through and navigate. It's the perfect place for those great photo opportunities. Inside the ship is rather small, to be expected, so if you're tall like I am, be prepared to duck- a lot. I could barely walk in there, I couldn't imagine having to be inside of here while it was active. Maybe Norwegians weren't 6'6' at that time? There is a large gift shop, a small cafe which has indoor and outdoor seating- if the weather is nice, sit outside for sure. The air is wonderful here. Check it out, especially if you have the Oslo City Pass. Totally worth the trip. read more

Very detailed museum about the exploration of the Arctic circle. You could spend hours in here reading everything. Start by watching the movie to get an idea of what your learning about if your unfamiliar. I know I was. The movie is offered in a bunch of languages and not to long. You can climb into the hail of the Gjøa, gives you an idea of what they endure and endeavor was like. I The Fram is also a ship you can enter and there is a temperature chamber you can enter so you can get an idea of how cold it is. I personally like all the interactive things you can do in this museum. I can tell you right now I would never made it. I learned about something today I had no idea about. This is the best museum on the Bydoy Peninsula in my opinion. It is a bit of a walk uphill to get to the museum from the ferry drop point but the signage is ample and easy to follow. The entire museum is interesting but the best part is you can climb aboard and go below. Very cool to see how they lived. There is a little hands on area wher you can see if you can pull the sled or test out your shooting skills. The kids seem to flock to this. There's a little cafe inside to get refreshments and free wifi. read more

One of three museums next door to one another. We came here as part of the cruise ship shore tour with the provided bus. We had to move quickly through the museum to keep on schedule and get back to ship. So give yourself plenty of time here and the other museums. I took a number of photos to give you some idea of what's here. Before the official tour we came here on our own on the number 30 bus for 118 kroner each. We took a shortcut back to ship and official tour by taking the water taxi across the harbor. See photo. Much better way to get around harbor and see the sights. You can learn all about Arctic and Antarctic exploration here in one museum! There are two big ships there for you to explore and it's pretty cool. Also, don't forget to go to the polar room with the scary sound effects! This museum is not just about the Arctic exploration in Norway, it covers other British and American explorations in the north and south as well! The concept is nice, but I'd say there's way too much info for a museum. There posters with tons of words spanning all 3 floors and by the time you're done with the museum (if you have the stamina) it will be equivalent to reading an entire book on polar expeditions. I swear some poster layout looks like they blow up pages of a book and stick them to the wall. Aside from that, we did have a great time here. There is a kids area to simulate how it's like to go on an expedition. Adults have fun there too! Also don't forget to go to the polar room. It's the room that has creepy sound effects. Loved seeing the actual boats used in polar exploration, as well as photos, movie, and explanations of the expeditions. Sorry to say there were disasters, but also lots of amazing successes, many by Norwegians. Thankfully, there are interesting books about the expeditions of Amundsen to the South Pole and Shackleton (trapped in ice for 2-3 years) that make the museum even more amazing. Did not realize that Amundsen interacted extensively with the Inuits and learned from them about ideal use of seal skin clothes and use of dogs as to pull sleds. His use of Inuit clothing and "dogs for power and food" ideas, which Scott ignored, allowed Amundsen to succeed while Scott failed and lost his entire crew. read more

The Fram was an early icebreaker that pioneered polar exploration. The museum, built around the ship, is one of five museums on the island, four of which are worth doing, and can be done in a half-day to a day. When you visit, take the tunnel and go see the movie FIRST. It will make your visit much better! read more

The Fram museum is interesting. While you're on the same island as the Viking Ship Museum, I would highly recommend you also see the Fram Museum. The Fram is an actual ship that was part of the polar exploration. The museum features a neat 10 minute video (in multiple languages), many actual artifacts, lots of back story, and the actual ship. Depending on how much you like museums, if you read everything it will take a few hours. You can also just skim the highlights like I did over an hour. There are some kid friendly exhibits, but overall its not a children's museum. Inside is also a cafe and a gift store. They do have an elevator, but the way its laid out there are some stairs and a lot of walking. When it's time to leave, unless you're part of a tour you need to take the public bus or a Uber. The bus is not too difficult, but you do need to pay with cash or pay ahead of time. read more

Eh. Maybe I had been to one too many ship museums, but I was not thrilled with this one. The Fram was a Norwegian ship that sailed to The Arctic and was designed like an egg to withstand the pressures of ice. The entire ship ( the real thing) is housed in this building in all it's glory!! You can go through the actual ship and see the entire thing close up which was nice. But there was a smell of turpentine or something in this building ( probably whatever they perserved the boat with) that gave me an instant headache. And that coupled with how hot it was in this museum cut my visit short. If you are a stronger person than I, ( and maybe more interested in ships and sailing) you will no doubt spend hours reading all the displays and taking pictures throughout. It is well organized. I was just glad this was part of my Oslo pass and that I didn't pay extra for this museum as it wasn't one of my favorites!! read more

This is another museum in Oslo that focuses on one awesome central item (like the three Viking ships or kon tiki raft in nearby museums) and absolutely knocks it out of the park. This entire museum is built around the massive polar fram ship, with exhibits, photos and video displays on long tiered catwalks all the way to the top. You can explore the entire ship from top to bottom after ascending each catwalk and learning all about the various journeys it took. My only criticism is there is no way to get a photo of it! The museums walls practically hug the ship on all sides. However you can practically reach out and touch it from all sides. read more

As discussed in other reviews, this museum features two ships that actually sailed on Polar explorations, and visitors are allowed to set foot on the Fram via a ramp from the top floor of the main museum. The smaller building, connected by a lower tunnel/walkway, was not quite as organized as the larger space. It detailed many stories of exploration and the peoples encountered. The film was very informative, but it took a minute or two for me to find the English version on the dial attached to my seat. I also had to switch seats twice to find a headset that was in some sort of working order. Most of the ones in my row were in pieces and had tape around them, in past attempts to hold the broken sets together. Overall, it was a very nice visit, but not as exciting as Oslo travel brochures seemed to suggest. read more

We visited the Fram Polar Ship Museum since it was part of the Oslo card. We wanted to maximize our card and visit as much of the attractions as possible. This was not a very big museum and there wasn't really anything special. It's a good visit if you have time to kill but if you are pressed for time, just skip this. Go to the National Gallery, Opera House or the Viking Ship Museum instead. read more

They have name plates of the various people that stayed in each bed/cot. The strange thing was each bed was so tiny I cannot imagine how someone could sleep in there. read more

a great museum in an out-of-the-way part of Oslo (the best way here is a quick little ferry ride from the main harbor), this museum houses the massive sailing vessel known as the Fram and artifacts from its journeys. anyone interested in science, travel, or history will definitely want to check it out. the Fram was the Norwegian wooden ship which, around the turn of the century, ventured the farthest north and the farthest south. it is a marvel of engineering as it was specially designed to withstand extreme cold and the damages caused by the pressure of frozen ice. this is the original ship and not some mockup. you can actually go throughout a lot of the ship and see the crew quarters, the engine room, the captain's quarters, the dining area, doctor's room, bar/entertainment room, and more! and photos are welcome. aside from the ship, there are a few other exhibits: dioramas about other polar expeditions, notebooks and sketches from the crew, a lot of stuffed animals which were brought back during the expeditions, and more. it won't take you very long to check out the whole thing - maybe a bit over an hour. however, within a 5 minute walk there are a few other sightseeing stops - the Maritime Museum, Viking Ship Museum, Kon-Tiki Museum, and Norwegian Cultural History Museum. consider that a 24-hour Oslo Pass (currently 270 kroner, about $45 USD) will grant you unlimited use of mass transit and free/discounted sightseeing, and you can really get your money's worth if you are in the neighborhood! read more

Cool! We went to the Viking Ship Museum right before this, otherwise this would have been my first museum about boats! I'm sure it's the first museum about arctic explorer boats that I've ever visited though. We started by watching the movie, which I'm glad we did because it provided a lot more context about the museum. We read the comics too, some of which are definitely not appropriate for children. There are two boats in the museum, and we walked on the Fram! The lighting in the museum kept changing colors, so the photos get a bit distorted and shaded differently. Anyway, very informative, and I think I actually thought about what it would be like to go on a journey to the North Pole, what it would take, and how people live and survive up there. It seems like so much effort, especially in the cold! Living style must be so different. Anyway, worth a visit! Student tickets are 40 NOK, and adults are 145 NOK. Try to come when you're still in school! read more

Of all the ship based museums I visited in Bygdøy, this was my favorite. You walk inside and are immediately greeted by the towering hull of the Fram - the keel is at nearly the same level as the entry floor. The ship is crammed inside the building - making the building seem too small and making you feel insignificant in comparison, which is kind of reinforced when you think about what the ship and its crews went through. The informational portion of the exhibits are stretched around the sides of the building, on three different floors. Through a combination of photographs, video, and other multimedia, it does a great job of telling the story of the incredible accomplishments of these explorers. Exhibits are labeled in both Norwegian and English, and touchscreen devices exist if you need information in one of several other language. Don't miss the "Polar Simulator" on the "2nd floor" - a really cold passage that cheekily simulates a deck breaking up as the ice crushes a ship, dead frozen bodies, and an ice cave. It actually just felt really good since the museum gets hotter as you go up.And imagine my surprise - when you get to the top of the museum, you can go on board the ship and then go down inside, something I really didn't expect, but was very cool. There's another building as well, connected by a tunnel near where you enter, and that building houses less dense exhibits on other arctic and antarctic voyages, as well as the much smaller (and not accessible) polar ship Gjøa. There's also a short, maybe 12 minute video on the various polar explorers, available in one of many different langauges. I liked how they did this - sound effects that aren't language specific are broadcast through the main speaker system, but a headset at each seat can be adjusted to deliver narration in the listeners chosen language. Also - this theater does what seems to be all the rage now, and uses three projectors that are "synchronized" to create a single widescreen. Unfortunately, problems here just like in Ireland where I first saw this - one of the projectors was out. So who knows if I missed some important or awesome stuff going on over there. Like everything else in Bygdøy, your admission is free with the Oslo Pass. Well worth a visit. read more

This was my first "exploration" in Oslo - and what a treat! I really enjoyed my visit. I went there thinking I'd spend at most an hour (our guidebook mentioned 30 minutes would suffice), and I was there for nearly 3 hours! There's just so much to read, learn and appreciate. It totally gave me a sense of Norwegian culture, a sense of the love of exploring and the sea that people have; I spent three hours just marvelling at the genius, the effort, planning, the courage and sacrifice that went into the expeditions. You get to be part of the dreams that the explorers Amundsen, Nansen and their teams had. I walked away with a sense of wonder at the human spirit. read more

This museum tells the story of the impressive ice boats and the Arctic explorations that the wooden boats and their crew accomplished. The stories are very well told and the boat on display is enormous and surrounded by catwalks. By the time I toured the boat from each level (around and finally on the top deck level) and went to the other wing down a long hallway I wished I had been wearing either a Fitbit or some roller blades! It's a long walk but certainty very interesting. They had some amusing cartoons about the Arctic in the hallway connecting the building - I wasn't sure if this a temporary exhibit as it was unrelated to the Fram, but it was entertaining. The part I found interesting was the story of all the other peoples that the explorers encountered (Canadians/Inuit etc). A well balanced museum to say the least - showing other perspectives. Definitely a place to visit. Don't forget your Oslo Pass. Easy to get here by bus read more

It's an amazing adventure, because you get to read up on Polar expeditions' history, but you also get to visit practically every nook and cranny of the Fram. It's an eye-opener to see how carefully the crew had to pack, how they made do and in what cramped quarters they lived for years at a time. A must-see when in Oslo. Easy to get to via ferry.
