Frank and Betsie's is a well kept secret, but worth finding and dining there. It's small and intimate, the food is delicious, reasonably priced, and they pour your wine in front of you rather than filling a glass behind the counter. We've been coming to Frank and Betsie's for close to 40 years, and the quality and service has never wavered. Hubby and I used to come here a loooooong time ago. I'm not sure why we stopped coming, but I figure we will be back. I've been here recently with my sis twice and a friend once and I have enjoyed every meal. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. They have wonderful seats on a patio out front with umbrellas that make it a pleasure even when the sun is beating down. They start with a nice french bread and butter. I the recent times I have been there I got an omelette for lunch, a shrimp dish for dinner, and a quiche for lunch. All were excellent. I'm glad I rediscovered this place! Last year we got carryout from the restaurant due to the pandemic. We were impressed with the food as well as the owner, who personally brought out the food. This year we returned and ate outside. The food was delicious, but the service was terribly slow. We waited over an hour for our entrees. The server kept apologizing but that didn't help. It seems they need more servers. read more

I feel like I'm a roll with suburban eating; I guess it's good to change the scenery every now and then. I had dinner tonight with my "aunt" Dianne in Glencoe at a cute little French place called Frank and Betsie's. It was a simple meal with the focus on catching up on life and my travels. The food was tasty and a large menu to choose from. The feeling is definitely small suburban french bistro and I can see how it's been around for 15 years. The bread is served nice and warm with butter (I'd prefer olive oil) with a nice wine list. Our entire meal consisted of three items, Dianne's large soup, my Cesar salad starter and trout main dish. The salad was great and I could have twice as much. My trout was very well cooked and served with sides of rice and a few veggies. The mushroom, Dijon and dill sauce was a perfect compliment of flavors. Our service was very good, even on a slow night and my only complaint would be the value. But I guess the pricing comes with the territory and even then it's not super crazy (three dishes and two glasses of wine for $50). The outside patio is a huge bonus for the summer and fall seasons, and I'd recommend going there for a nice, quiet meal in the suburbs. There's a good reason Chicago Magazine named it a best restaurant in 1999. read more

Cool little neighborhood spot for fairly upscale dining. Unfortunately they were out of their popular lamb shank but the two chicken dishes we ordered were tender, flavorful and enjoyable. I really enjoyed this place! Food was very tasty and our waiter was very accommodating. I got a grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes (comes with bacon but I omitted it). It was so cheesy and delicious! They added some mustard to the sandwich and it really enhanced the flavor. Would definitely order that again. We've probably dined at Frank & Betsie's ten times over the years, and have always enjoyed the experience. When you enter, you are seated promptly and courteously. It's good to have a reservation - we've seen it packed on a weeknight. Service is very attentive and helpful (e.g., when I asked about the potato croquette last night, the waiter brought one to try). He also upgraded my wife's glass of wine, as they had a partly-opened bottle of a pricier variety. All plates stay on the table until the last diner finishes, so you aren't made to feel rushed. The dish to order is lamb shank. They only make so many each night, so reserve in advance or get there early. An earlier reviewer grumbled about the beef stroganoff. I had it last night, and it was fine. Sorry the earlier reviewer had a different experience. Bottom line: excellent ambiance, service and food. read more

Paris is my 'home away from home', dining here was like being at my favorite 'bistrot' on the 'Left Bank'.Oui! Despite living in the area for seven years, I had never been to Frank and Betsie's until about two weeks ago. I had delayed going because I'd been told that it was more of an "older crowd" destination, and coming from my mid-40s friends, I took that to mean it catered to a senior citizen crowd. This is true, in part, but they also cater to the moms-who-lunch crowd, and our table of eight felt very welcome and at ease. The menu is extensive. I had the buffalo chicken salad, and absolutely loved it. Friends had the quiche, cobb salad, and crab cakes, and they all raved about their food, as well. Service was super friendly and accommodating, although a bit slow. There is a lovely dessert case, and the next time I go back I'd like to sample the chocolate mousse cake. There is outdoor seating and the restaurant has done a good job of trying to create a space that doesn't look out directly to Green Bay Rd. The inside is a bit dark - that's the only thing I was a bit "meh" about. read more

This has been a family favorite for years...a weekly tradition. Frank and Bestie are wonderful hosts, they have a good balance between the family-restaurant-feel and the fancy-french-bistro-feel. If you're a regular, they'll remember you. We almost always go for dinner, but have been for lunch on occasion also. They're also very willing to accommodate dietary needs, my mom eats gluten-free and the cook is always able to make adjustments. Some menu suggestions: my personal favorite is the chicken schnitzel, but the beef stroganoff and the lamb shank are also excellent. For appetizers, the baked brie would be my recommendation, and they make (seriously) the BEST Caesar dressing in the entire world. Seriously. When it comes time for dessert, make sure you sample one of Frank's famous truffles, Betsie's cookies dipped in chocolate, or (my habitual choice) a mini chocolate eclair. YUM. Oh, my mom gets the chocolate flourless cake...perfect for those gluten-free folks. The desserts themselves are reason enough to stop by...so make sure you save room. So, go to Frank and Betsie's. This is a great neighborhood continental style restaurant. We happened upon this spot driving back down to Evanston from Glencoe. We were actually looking for something quick, but this spot is really very inviting. I call in continental, because many of the mains have nice sauces. But with the basmati rice and the friendly, non-pretentious service, it does not fit neatly into that category. Something about it was just right. If we lived nearby, I could see making this a regular spot for a nice dinner before heading to that gorgeous new theater just up the road. read more

My family and I highly recommend this restaurant. Everything from the food to the charming atmosphere and service helped to make our experience a memorable one. After our wonderful dinner, we were able to choose from a wide variety of after dinner treats. The lemon cake, pecan torte, and carrot cake were just a few we noticed in the desert case that night. We learned that all of the deserts are made by Betsie, and this I know makes them even better. If one had to choose...the lemon cake would be my personal favorite. An evening was well spent with friends at Frank and Betsies. I had lamb shank which was well prepared and I enjoyed the fact that it was a generous portion. I've had this dish elsewhere and the portion is much smaller. It was very flavorful. The other guests had the half chicken (which was thoroughly enjoyed) and something with schnitzel. Sorry, can't remember. We all loved our dishes. I especially enjoyed the ambience. It is a very pleasant dining room with posters, table cloths and always flowers on the table which give it a lovely civilized feeling. Our waiter, David, was efficient and pleasant. There are many fine deserts to choose from and I chose my favorite to share, chocolate flour less cake. The Creme brûlée was excellent as well. Soup or salad are included as well as a side dish. I stopped in here during my visit to winnetka and WOW. the atmosphere was charming with classical music and real flowers on the tables. We were seated and served by Betsie herself who is as friendly as can be! we ordered the baked brie as an appetizer which was delicious and for the Entree I got the Chicken Schnitzel Sliders with Frites as well as their soup of the day a heart tomato mushroom and rice which was packed with complex flavor. The fries were crisp and delicious and the two large sliders i received were wonderful and filling so we had many leftovers. Betsie packaged them for us and brought them out. We ordered from their pastry counter (the creme brulee was amazing even cold) and we plan to go back. HIGHLY recommend. read more

Great little place! We went there for Mother's Day and were very pleased with the food and service. While they cannot really call themselves "French" 100%, they do serve good food at a reasonable price. The wait-staff was very helpful and attentive and we were very happy from the pate to the dessert.
