Unimpressive house. FLW's ugliest. Sure, it was his earliest work but it's unimpressive. It's basically a workshop of various awkward attempts. Don't play it up. Our guide, an older woman, gushed about how wonderful the house was. Um, it wasn't. It's dark, disjointed, and boring. Other, later designs, in the neighborhood are better. Nothing like Los Angeles, though. Our guide tried to enlist my girlfriend to herd a couple of persistently lagging, entitled, and aloof Europeans (French or Belgian, unfortunately ...) to keep up with the rest of the group. Sorry, lady, that's YOUR job - don't try to offload your responsibilities on your charges. And, please, drop the affected French-accented 'Notre Dame'. You're an American. Speak like one, and stop kissing the asses of European tourists. read more

Super cool museum tour of architecture's demigod Frank Lloyd Wright house and studio! This place is cool and the whole area is pretty amazing. There's so much to see here if you dig his style. There's houses all over the neighborhood designed by him and google maps made them easy to find. The tour itself is pretty great, you get to see his designs and ideas for a living space. It's crazy these were designed in so long ago and the detail is amazing. It goes for about an hour and there is a good amount of covid precautions in place. Since the tour groups are smaller due to covid I would totes suggest buying tour tickets online instead of buying at the place. Even still they seem to offer tours every half hour to that helps as well. Definitely a lot of history to soak up here and the whole area is a great place to walk around! read more

This was an awesome tour! Less than $20 per adult for a ticket. It was definitely worth a trip to Oak Park and getting a detailed account of his home and first studio. My favorites were 1) the children's playroom with everything built according to their size (and the grand piano that he hid the back of by suspending it over the staircase) and 2) the octagonal office in his studio, with the octagon shape being echoed again and again in different iterations going up. The tour guide did a great job of explaining not only Frank Lloyd Wright's importance to the history of American architecture but also his family life, finances, and the beginning of his career. I thought it was fun to learn about some of his personality traits, too, like how he felt defensive about his height and how he pridefully proclaimed that he was the best architect in the world. Even if you're not a FLW fan, this would be a cool tour to take! read more

In compare to my visit to Falling Water at Pittsburgh, this is just above average house. Obviously this house is his own home. He do not have all the money to build his house to luxury package compared to Falling Water. This is just simply a home for his family and his studio. The house feel like Japanese culture influenced. It has the little things that functions of the space. I cannot imagine house that has less room to grew his 6 children. Nothing fancy about the house. I do like the playroom to insert their piano to create more play room. Each room has good lighting and skylight. But the studio do have the fancy structure design with octagonal roof with tension holding roof. This will not work at Florida since we have hurricane. It work at Chicago since most of the load is gravity load. The studio has more detail and worth a visit. read more

If you like architecture or Chicage history, the Frank Lloyd Wright House tour and Neighborhood Walking tour are a must. The house tour takes about an hour and you are led by a knowledgeable tour guide. The guide is primarily English, and there are other languages available. The walking tour is self guided audio tour. There are 10 houses and it is at your own pace. It is about 1/4 mile on paved sidewalk. Suitable for all mobility abilities, and audio is in many languages. I've visited the FLW home and studio many times over the years and I find the home a beautiful showcase of Oak Park history. The home has fun nooks and crannies and I learn something new every time I visit. The house has been part of the Chicago Architectural Center Open House also - always a good visit (is you're fast, they also have the Robie House open). The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio is a beautiful, historic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in Oak Park. And it's not just any beautiful, historic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house--it's the one he designed when he was 22 (what the fuck), where he lived for years with his first wife and their six kids (definitely pulling this from Wikipedia). I actually visited five years ago, during a trip to Chicago in 2014, but I forgot to review the place and then passed by it multiple times when I was staying in Oak Park last month. You don't need to know this, but this whole paragraph is basically devoted to my Yelp OCD, and I'm just sorry that you're still reading it. Anyway, the house was gorgeous, of course. We didn't take a tour (I would like to do that one day; looking at the photos, I don't think we saw the whole house), but we did walk around and browse the gift shop, which was worth visiting on its own. Frank Lloyd Wright shit makes for great museum store kinds of gift items. We bought a picture frame, which I'm now realizing has gone unused for five years because we never print pictures. If you find yourself in or near Oak Park, the Frank Lloyd Wright Home is definitely worth seeing. It's a cool place, both inside and out. I'd like to spend more time there next time I'm in town. read more

Taking a tour of his studio/home turned out to be both fascinating and entertaining for me :-) After taking the tour, my friend and I then set out into the neighborhood for a self-guided tour of the many other homes that Frank Lloyd Wrighht designed in Oak Park. Tip: While they do allow cameras on the guided tour, the docents really keep the tours moving, so you'll need to BOLO for good photo ops before your group moves along. Bottom line: I highly recommend that anyone visiting Chicago that's every heard of Frank Lloyd Wright venture a ways off the beaten path and take a tour of his Home and Studio - you won't regret it! read more

Frank Lloyd Wright designed several buildings in this section of Oak Park, Illinois, which also includes his home and studio. It was a wonderful experience to just walk through the neighborhood for a while and look around. Taking a walk, you realize just how versatile Frank Lloyd Wright was. The first Wright design I ever encountered in person is the Guggenheim museum, a monument of abstraction, modernism and the retro future. But when you walk through Wright's old neighborhood in Oak Park, you get a totally different view of Wright's architectural genius and oeuvre. Definitely recommend a visit to Wright's old neighborhood to anyone visiting the Chicago area. read more

Loved it!! We had a little debate about whether to leave downtown Chicago and spend the majority of a day in Oak Park. I'm so glad we did. I'm a fan of 20th c architecture, FLW, and historic homes, so this tour was perfect fit. The price is a little steep especially if you're bringing a family or paying for multiple adults, so we decided to forego the paid walking tour option (that includes a headset) and just do the guided tour of the house and studio. We opted instead to walk the block ourselves afterwards, it was a gorgeous day, and just chat about what we saw. We also decided not to pay the extra fee to take photos inside as there were plenty of books and cards in the shop if we needed visual reminders of the visit. The house and studio are pristinely preserved. It almost feels as if the family has just left for a moment and yum popped in to peek at the inside. Our guide was very interesting and her tour was quite polished. Although I felt a bit hurried at times (they get a lot of people though the door each hour), I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. read more

With it being such a gross, rainy day I was hesitant about making the drive to Oak Park for the holiday tour at the Frank Lloyd Wright house, but I was so glad I made the visit. The free hot cocoa and cookies in the gift shop (today only) and then the free tour that followed was just lovely. The tour guides are so knowledgeable and gave all sorts of background on how Frank Llyod Weight developed his prairie style. The foundation has done a great job with the restoration of the house, and the Christmas decorations bwere beautiful. This was a wonderful place to visit for a short trip, and the free holiday tour/cocoa made it all the more worthwhile! read more

Well worth a drive out to Oak Park if you are visiting Chicago. Great for the FLW fan and/or architecture fan. We bought our home tour tickets in advance, arrived at the gift shop just a few minutes before our tour and had the opportunity to lock up coats and bags (optional but I recommend as there are some tight spaces in the house). Our guide was friendly, full of great knowledge and answered all of our questions. One question she wasn't 100% sure about but went and sought out an expert after the tour for the answer. That's service! The home is very unique and because of several expansions in the time FLW lived there, the home has a lots of interesting stories. Don't forget to check out the surrounding neighborhood where there are several other privately-owned FLW houses. If it weren't a snowy and slick day out, we would have walked around more and maybe have visited the temple he designed that is also close by. Enjoy your visit! read more

I've done several FLW tours across America, including others in Chicago, and this one did not disappoint. In the Oak Park neighborhood the Home and Studio and city tours run daily. The nearby Unity Temple is closed on Sunday. The home and studio tour is an hour long and gives a good view of both properties including some background on FLW, the use of the properties throughout time and of course the architecturally significant features in the properties. The guide was very knowledgeable and was a good presenter. The guide mentioned that the guides write their own tour so going on the tour again might unearth more interesting facts or a different angle on the home. Another nice service is that they have cabinets to lock up luggage and backups in while you go on the tour - no charge. So feel free to stop by on the way to or from the airport if you're a visitor. ​ read more

Prairie architecture style was kind of born in Oak Park and it is probably a capitol of the Prairie style in the World. Just for that single reason, one who likes art and architecture should visit Oak Park and Frank Lloyd Wright home/studio. I do not want to dwell on the house as the Forest Drive (and adjacent street) guided tour will give you more about brilliant ideas that were developed around of turn of the 19th century. Hiden entrances and shear aesthetics that stood time is a proof that it was worth it. There is a sense that you are witnessing something special when you see these marvelous houses on the Forest Drive and the gossipy stories about not-so-nice Frank's mom have no effect on me. He was bold and he was thoughtful and I can get over his fussiness with the owners. It was well worth visiting it. read more

Finally made it out to Oak Park to see the Wright Home and Studio - the Wright family's home for many decades. If you are a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright's work, this house is not to be missed! The house is located in a quiet neighborhood in Oak Park, surrounded by lots of beautiful trees and gardens. It was very easy to find and street parking was plentiful (I was there on a Saturday, so I assume parking must be easy most days!). The house itself was not what I was expecting. While it certainly stands out amongst the Victorian homes surrounding it, the Wright Home is not in the famous prairie style. However, the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright is everywhere, most notably in his signature windows, which are gorgeous! It was really fascinating to see all of these little details around the home that hint at his developing architectural style. The tour guides were wonderful and filled with lots of great facts and stories. Masks are no longer required for vaccinated people, and the guides did a great job of making everyone feel comfortable with wearing masks or not. The tour costs $20, with the option to donate more to support the trust. I HIGHLY recommend this tour to any FLW fan, but also to anyone who enjoys seeing beautifully restored old homes. I've always wanted to do an out the Frank Lloyd Wright outing that included his homes and the Unity Temple in Oak Park. It is defiantly a day trip. I took the Green Line train to Oak Park. From the train, you can walk to both the Unity Temple and to Frank Lloyd Wright home and other homes he had designed, just give yourself 15 - 20 minutes for the walk. The tour of his home and studio was very interesting. Due to several tours that day, we weren't able to really take our time in each room. The tour was a little rushed. Prior to the tour, I did the audio tour of his homes in the area. This tour will take roughly 90 minutes. Just make sure you can read a map. The map was a little confusing. You also need to really, really pay attention of the house addresses. Overall, I'm glad I finally took this tour. read more

Built 1889, reacquired & renovated 1974, the FLW home & studio offers an intimate look at Wright's frontal attack on Victorian design and style. Restored to its 1909 appearance with many original details that survived the intervening years as an apartment house including floors and wall murals, and surprisingly many original furniture pieces were repurchased. Think compression (entry) and expansion (the space). Marvel at the 6 fireplaces, the library and especially the barrel-vaulted second-floor space built for the 6 children, a fantastic family room. The one-hour tour gives you a great sense of how difficult it must have been to live and work with this genius American architect! The gift shop is in the old garage where the man parked his yellow convertible lol. The walking tour thru the neighborhood is just you and an audio device, no docent who can answer questions, so the extra $15 pp is pretty obnoxious. You can replicate the tour easily enuf, just grab the brochure and walk the block of Forest Ave, with a tiny side trip down Elizabeth Court, to see the 6 other FLW-designed houses in the neighborhood. Logistics: as others have noted free parking is readily available on the streets. I highly recommend booking ahead if your schedule is constrained. Kids will be bored to tears by this tour. And yes Yelp, they do have a gender-neutral bathroom. As of March 2017 no additional fee is charged to take pictures inside the house. I posted a few of mine here. read more

I came here as part of Open House Chicago which I would definitely recommend! I had to wait in line for around 40 minutes but I saved $17 per person which is way overpriced for this house. The house itself is beautiful - the dining room, studio, and playroom were definitely my favorites. Everything is so carefully designed and comes together so cohesively for this beautiful home. I would also say that everything is very well preserved. There were guides throughout the house that were happy to tell us an abbreviated history in each room which was quite nice. If you're in Chicago and an Architect (or Frank Llloyd Wright fan) you have to come here. It's a very important place. But I do feel all of his creations are very overpriced (including the Unity temple which wasn't included as part of the Open house even). I'm happy I got to see this for free and I would say that if you live in Chicago, it's worth it to wait for the yearly Open House event. read more

Admittedly, this was a cool experience. My boyfriend designs buildings and could not resist booking us on a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio. I always fell asleep in history class, so I was not super thrilled about this tour until we arrived in the peaceful and beautiful neighborhood that is Oak Park. I was in awe from the moment I stepped out of the train station, surrounded by greenery and amazing architecture. After walking several blocks to the site, we picked up our tickets (which we had booked online earlier that weekend) in the souvenir shop. Speaking of which, the online booking process was very easy, and there's quite a bit of availability if you decide to join last minute. $17 for a 60 minute tour is totally worth the price! We joined our group, led by a volunteer docent, and I'm glad that we did the docent-guided tour rather than the self-guided audio tour. It made for a more personal and memorable experience. Wright's home is super cool, and it was neat to hear all the history behind the pieces of furniture and art, as well as learn about his life journey. My favorite part was the "octagon room" where Wright seals the deal with his clients, supposedly. The architectural sights were overall breathtaking! The www.flwright.org website is helpful if you're looking to plan a longer trip to see all the Wright buildings. I would eventually love to see them all, but for me, seeing the home and studio was more than enough for one day. Would recommend! read more

I wasn't sure what to expect on this tour but based on the positive reviews we decided to give it a shot. And bonus because they had just put some half-price discounted tickets up online at a discount ticket sale site (Goldstar). It was early November so perhaps they so some discount tickets once it gets to the time of year when the weather can get crummy in Chicagoland. And they have tours about every 20 minutes or so, though making reservations ahead of time is normally recommended, especially during the Summer & early Autumn. Our tour guide was wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable. We learned so many fascinating details and were just in awe while touring the home & studio. We grew up in Chicagoland and had never been on this tour and for anyone else holding out I would highly recommend it. Even if you aren't an architecture buff it was still very interesting to go through and marvel at the design & the period. read more

Just watched a FLW documentary on Amazon called Artbound "That Far Corner" and it made me think about this tour I did years ago in Oak Park! The movie has more to do with his California concrete-temple style architecture but definitely enjoyed watching this! Now I'm ready to revisit Oak Park and check out the Unity Temple as well as Robie house in Hyde Park! FLW home-studio tour in Oak Park is still one of my favorites to date. If you get out to LA, check out the Hollyhock house located in Barnsdall park. It's pretty amazing, especially above the giant fireplace! FLW; organic, prairie architecture in Chicago. Our guide mentioned that FLW used this house as a place to experiment with his ideas. You can see how his work changed and matured as you move from the original part of the house through the later additions. Finishing up in the studio, you can see how he transitioned to what most consider to be the FLW characteristic style. I love historical tours! This tour was sooo good. I went on a whim by myself and had a wonderful time. The groups are fairly small so you have room to move around, talk with each other, ask questions. And the guides have so much knowledge and really keep your attention through the hour plus tour. The house and studio are so interesting, you can really see all the thought that Wright put into his designs and what an amazing architect he truly was. read more

Spectacular! I'm so excited I can hardly calm down enough to write this review! Let it be known that I kind of stumbled upon this tour. I headed out to Oak Park to check out the hood because some friends said I would dig it. I grabbed some lunch, strolled the streets, checked out Hemingway's birthplace and museum and then realized I was smack dab in the middle of the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District (it's hard to miss since his name is next to every road sign in the area). So I thought, what the hell, I do live in a city known for its architecture so it seems fitting to check out one of the big dogs. I walked the half mile from town and ended up in a gorgeous neighborhood. I walked around the Frank Lloyd Wright gift shop (located in the previously occupied garage of the home) and saw that you could do a guided home and studio tour or a combo home and studio + walking (the neighborhood to see other homes by Wright with guided audio) tour. And yippee, they do student discount pricing - bless you grad school! I'm not going to lie, it may have been the best $12 I have spent all summer! The man was an artistic genius! His use of space, lines, angles, colors, and nature are unparalleled. The attention to the most minute details was mind blowing. The tour guide did an excellent job pointing out all of Wright's intricacies and proclivities that are apparent in every nook and cranny of the home and studio. This is the first home Wright built for himself and he and his first wife raised their six children there. The children's playroom will make you stand in awe of his genius. You will be a captive audience as you stand in front of the house and the guide tells you to look around at the other houses' use of front walkways - they all lead straight to the door. Wright put the entrance to his gated yard off to one side and created a walkway that led through the gardens and provided different vantage points of the house and roof angles providing guests with an experience and a way to combine nature and home. Fan-f***ing-tastic! It's called the pathway of discovery! I'm in, show me more and don't stop! And the studio - suffice it to say, there is a lighting pulley system rigged in the octagonal drafting room that also acts as structural support - mind blowing! Pictures cannot do this place justice. This review cannot do this place justice, Just go see it for yourself. The man was eccentric, sometimes naughty, but always creative and original. I'm so glad this house has been preserved! This review is for Wright Plus 2019 which has open house for Frank Lloyd Wright private homes in Oak Park, IL. The orientation center was at the FLW House and Studio where you can get your wristband and map brochure. There are also multiple port-a-potties since the private homes do not have bathrooms. For FLW members, the nearby church was used as an oasis for indoor bathroom and snacks with water. Out of the 10 houses, 2 houses are part of the FLW trust owned and the other 8 are private homes. So, we visited 6 of the 8 private homes in the rain. Our personal favorites are the Fricke and Webb but all 6 were unique in their own way. Tickets are $75 for members from Nov to New Years. Don't miss if you are already a FLW member. Plus, you get discount on your lunch/dinner for restaurants in Oak Park, IL who participate. read more

An interesting piece of Chicago/Suburbs. My gf loves architecture and FLW. So we decided to spend a day seeing 2 of his popular homes. From downtown Chicago the green line takes you close this location. A brief 10 minute walk through a safe area leads you here. I am not so sure about the parking situation but I suggest if you are staying downtown, take the subway. The tour admission is $15 and if you want to take pics it's an additional $5. The tour guide was a young girl who knew her stuff. The tour was interesting, informative and worth an hour of your time especially if you enjoy architecture. I didn't know a lot prior but after the tour I actually learned something. ENJOY! read more

Excellent three hour tour combining both the interior of the house and studio with a walking tour of Wright houses in the Oak Park historic area. It's amazing how much of the original contents of the home survive, and how well the rest has been restored. Our guide was very knowledgable, and the intimate size of the ten person tour made it easy to see and hear everything. read more
