It took me a long time to find a dentist I liked after moving to Ypsi two years ago and leaving…read morebehind a dentist I'd had for 20 years in Chicago. The first dentist I tried insisted that I needed, literally, many thousands of dollars' worth of work to correct "severe periodontal disease" and numerous "serious" cracks in my teeth that would have to be repaired with crowns and other violently expensive measures. This was news to me. My Chicago dentist had done a crown for a tooth that was seriously cracked but never mentioned any others that needed that kind of work. When I said that my previous dentist had also never mentioned any level of gum disease, let alone "severe," the dentist and hygienist both smirked and rolled their eyes and said that maybe she just hadn't noticed. Right. Way to gain the trust of a new patient: Insult her previous dentist, whom she liked enough that she stayed with her for 20 years. Second dentist I tried was like a factory. Very efficient, very cold. I didn't like it at all. And then I found Dr. Cole and his wonderful hygienist, Linda. Both of them said that my gums were very healthy and in great shape, and after X-rays and a thorough exam, Dr. Cole did not recommend any kind of extensive work. I asked specifically about a crack in a front tooth that the first dentist I tried had insisted was dangerous and needed to be addressed immediately to save the tooth. Dr. Cole said the crack was a shallow surface crack and could be fixed for cosmetic reasons if I wanted. Otherwise, I could just leave it as it is. Everyone in the office was extremely friendly and helpful. They took their time talking to me and answering my questions, and they didn't try to make me hand over my life savings for dental work I didn't need. Excellent! Finally, I have a dentist I trust and like. PLEASE NOTE: Dr. Cole is in a beautiful new office at a new location, not far from the old office: 1974 North Huron, right across the street from the big white EMU bubble.

Well, this dental emergency turned into a true blessing in disguise…read more I chipped my front tooth the other day and was pretty freaked because I don't have dental insurance, and I'm not familiar with this area. So, I looked on Yelp and found this dentist with a high score, and happened to be one of the few offices open to answer my call on that day. They were very helpful and friendly right off, on the phone, but I was still contemplating skipping a visit, just because I was afraid it would cost a lot. But I decided to go to make sure there were no cracks, and since it was in the front I didn't want it to look bad. I'm so, so glad that I went. The intake people treat you like family, literally. I never knew what that phrase meant until I met these people. It feels like they are just picking up on a conversation they had with you previously.... they are completely comfortable with patients (strangers.) Right away they treat you like they are going to know you forever. Dr. Cole fixed my chipped tooth without a filling or anesthetic in only a few minutes with no pain or discomfort at all. Then he checked all my teeth and told me everything going on with them, which was great. He could tell right away how much I floss. It's nice to hear there is a pay off for all that flossing. The best part was completely unexpected, though... two things: 1. He smoothed out that chip in a way that makes my teeth actually look straighter. They look way better than they did before I chipped one. It looks like I got braces or something. Five minutes of work, and my teeth look straight. That is crazy! 2. Because of the minimal amount of time and work; the minor damage to my tooth, and since I had no insurance, he charged me hardly anything! It ended up costing less than dinner at Casey's. That's crazy! Anyway, you get the picture that this was the best visit that anyone could ever have to the dentist. If I ever move out of Ann Arbor I'm coming back here for dental work.

When I told her that the numbing shot was excruciating, she said "look I'm just trying to do my job" The tech said the dentist was going to speak to me about potentially having tmj from my recent root canal. The doctor never addressed the issue and when I brought it up, she got loud with me and started to patronize me. Telling me "well I don't know if it's clicking, or locking. If it's one the left side or right side. I don't have background information." I stated that was the reason you were supposed to speak to me about the issue. Not to mention I called 2 weeks prior and never received a call back to address my tmj concerns. I asked if she was okay, as she was seemingly getting more aggressive with me. Also, I'd like to note that Dr Murphy and her staff did not give me any paperwork or verbal instruction following my root canal until after I called and requested the aftercare procedure myself. Kristin Murphy at Corner Dental made me feel threatened and she made me feel unsafe in an environment where I was already nervous about. I pray that she does not keep getting away with treating patients in this manner.

I did not feel rushed while working in my form, nor did I feel I was being punished for not having my form filled out, prior my appointment . Filling out the form in person, turned out to be much easier than trying to fill it out electronically on my phone. I was greeted by Alysce, The dental assistant. I noticed right away that those she did not see a smile on my face, did not change her stance to be friendly and welcoming towards me. Which is something and I respect and look for. Alysce was personable, yet transparent from the time of our greet to the end of my appointment. Aubrey conducted thorough yet careful cleaning, she took the time to express problems and solutions w/n my mouth as she finds them. I received feedback that reflected mindfulness of what patients could afford, that I could apply practically, when searching for toothbrush products! She was engaging yet able to stay on task. It is convenient that they have the x-ray machine in the same room; the rooms are not congested, they are stocked, yet orderly and clean. The doctor I saw was Dr. morocco, who is kind, straight to the point, open for questions, and feedback. He offered feedback based on my questions and concise manner. And I left with the referral for an orthodontist.

It's run by a husband & wife team of Dr. Kim and Dr. Ma, so it felt good knowing that I was supporting a local business instead of some corporate franchise. The person at the front desk (I think her name was Niki) was very helpful when I was filling out my forms and explained to me what was covered through my UofM grad student insurance, along with other logistics related things. I'm usually not good with paperwork, so her help was very much appreciated! After the initial examination, I learned that I had a filling that came loose and some minor gingivitis (which was expected since my teeth have been bothering me for a while now), and Dr. Ma explained her treatment plan for me in a way that I could actually understand. I should mention that I usually get very anxious when it comes to dentists, but Dr. Ma's gentle approach helped alleviate some of that anxiety. Oh yeah, and the hygienist was super thorough. Like, it felt like she got to parts of my mouth that I didn't even know existed. Quick Edit: my boyfriend recently went to Choice Dental after I pestered him about his dental health situation. He's just as weary of dentists as I am, so I was really relieved when he told me that he had a good experience with Dr. Kim. And when he says anything positive about any kind of doctor, he REALLY sincerely means it. So all in all I'd highly recommend Choice Dental to anyone looking for a dentist in the Ann Arbor area.

A chain (message me if you want to avoid them) that would always cancel your approintments the week of, offering you an appointment you couldn't make or an appointment 5 months off. And everytime you'd go, different dentist. Nice. So, when I changed jobs, my wife and I looked for a new dentist. Little researcher that she is, she found Dr. Choi at Choice Dental, which is on South Main just across from the stadium in that office building with the parking underneath. Not only is the office pleasant and the staff very friendly and competant, but the service is just outstanding. Everytime I'd turn around, he'd have something new and techy, from the tiny camera he used to take pics of my teeth so I could see what was going on to the program he used to show my how my teeth were going to move. Better yet, when I went for my cleaning, the DENTIST did the whole cleaning. Not a 2 minute consult. The WHOLE cleaning. Long story short, this dentist will make you feel like you're back in time, with a dentist who's good at what he does and actually gives a damn about you. Old school. I asked, and they take pretty much all types of insurance (Delta, BCBS, United Concordia, Guardian, MetLife, Dentamax, AETNA and Cigna). You can also e-mail them at info@choicesmile.com. And... they ARE taking patients. :)
