Let's be honest, you're coming for the atmosphere, which is really cool and unique, and the cocktails. The food is not bad but it's the usual bar food: pizzas, fries, and other carb-loaded shareable dipping things--the food selection is very limited and reasonably priced for being a themed restaurant. The Frankenstein act traction is pretty cool. I didn't have any of the cocktails but the couple behind me was throwing them back, so they must be good. Couple of things: reservations are needed and they take your order at the bar, no table service. read more

Fun place to meet up with friends! Fun and creative cocktails! Service was friendly, they only accepted credit card payment. The ambiance was electrifying! Totally had the macabre theme going. Greeted by a large Frankenstein at the door, photo opportunities abound! We got the Purple Monster Martini, which I downed pretty quickly. Tasted like grape soda. I'm going to review this bar/restaurant for what it is: a fun tourist stop. We did not eat here, nor would I recommend getting food here. I would recommend popping in for a drink and to check out the themed decor. Keep appropriate expectations and it was a fun visit. We stopped in the early evening, it was near where we were having dinner, and it wasn't busy. This was perfect as we wanted to have one drink and enjoy the scene. They have a life sized monster and his bride, a horror movie on the large screen, and lots of mad scientist details to add to the overall feel. The drinks were good-fine, what we were expecting. We happened to show up right as The Monster itself was making an appearance with all his lights and sound effects - we almost left thinking that's what it sounded like all the time and then I almost wanted to stay another hour to see if it happened again...but we just had a drink or two and skedaddled. The music is very loud but the mezzanine was fun to sit up on. I bet this place is a hoot on Halloween but that's probably it. Avoid this place. We were so excited to try it due to some pretty cool social media videos, but we were wildly disappointed. The idea is cool, but the execution was incredibly lacking. *the seating at the upstairs tables is NOT meant for short legs. Sitting in the INCREDIBLY small booth, none of our party could reach the ground. Our legs were dangling the entire, WAY TOO LONG, time we had to wait for our food and drinks, and our poor legs were dead by the time we left. It was incredibly uncomfortable. *when the food finally came (after nearly an hour of waiting for it), it was missing many of the listed ingredients. They couldn't make one of drinks due to not having the needed ingredients, and 2 of our 3 pizzas were wrong because, again, they didn't have what they needed to make them. And even if they had been made the way the menu had them listed, I still don't think it would have tasted any better. The meal arrived cold and the pizza was floppy, which I'm not sure how you manage with wood fired pizza. But none of us finished our food. It was straddling the line of mediocre and gross. *the staff, with the exception of the super friendly bouncer, treated us like we were inconveniencing in them by patronizing their establishment. Almost like we were invading their space. They cleared the table of dishes from the customers before us, but never wiped the table. We ended up just cleaning it off ourselves to make sure we weren't dining on the crumbs and mess left behind by other diners. The main draw that brought us in was the atmosphere and theming of the restaurant. It was cool inside, but the music was SO loud, we could barely hear each other without yelling. We were so excited to see the "show" with the appearance of the waking monster. The show is supposed to play every hour, on the hour, starting at 6pm. We got there at about 630 and waited patiently for the next viewing. But what we didn't realize was that nearly every single night, they have other events going on that keep the show from happening at all. The night we visited it was trivia. That you have to pay for to join. Which I have never seen in all of my years of participating in pub quizes. So we missed the show, which was the main reason we picked this place to begin with. This is a strictly a gimmicky tourist trap, and I will never suggest it to any body. Don't believe the hype on social media. Don't waste your money and avoid it. read more

Been here a few times on our trip back to Scotland. And it seems like all the times we've stopped by it was pretty mellow and quiet. Guess we're coming in the wrong day. This visit, we stopped off for a pint to just relax and chill for a bit after walking around earlier. Last visit, the Frankenstein statue moved, a staple of the place I assume. Supposedly it moves at certain time. But this visit, not once as we were there for a while .it's nothing major about it....lol... If your there for a drink, it's pretty cool. Not sure I'd recommend, I guess if you're a big Frankenstein fan it would be good for a laugh. Some of the wait staff seemed bothered that we were there, although there was one or two who were welcoming. Drinks were fun, kept with theme of the place and were tasty. The food menu is super limited and took forever to get an order of truffle fries and cheesy garlic bread. The fires had minimal extra flavor and the bottom ones were floating in oil. Not worth the wait. We found this place on Pinterest and thought it looked fun. But the problem is that it's been pumped by so many travel bloggers that ultimately it's a disappointing experience. This is a must stop if you are in Edinburgh and are looking for a fun spot for the nightlife! Frankenstein is my favorite classic horror character so I had to stop at this themed bar! This is in an old church and the bar tenders told us that people had come into the bar and said back in the day they'd been baptized here! The servers are really nice and the drinks came out quick. They have a cool cocktail menu with many different spooky themed cocktails. In the evenings, once an hour a Frankenstein animatronic comes down from the ceiling with all the spooky music and theatrics. They have a lot of college student deals as well as a DJ on the weekends. The ABSOLUTE worst experience ever. Everyone's been great here in Scotland except for wandering into this college bar after a long day. No one could help us so went to the bar and were told they're "out" of everything except wings and plain fries. Meanwhile EVERYONE around us gets served pizzas and more. My BF had to go to the bar twice to get the beer they "forgot" we ordered and paid for...and then again to find where the fries and wings were. Not one person stopped by to check on us in the tiny corner we were put in. All tables were reserved but not a soul near us for 8 tables at least. This is a kiddie bar at best...seemingly run by 12 yr olds with an attitude. 100% DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

A friend recommended this place and it sounded fun... especially for Halloween! Place looked great, but all the bartenders saw us sit down and then didn't communicate with us at all. We finally went up to the bar to order and they were out of the first 2 pizzas we picked. We ordered the works and it was ok, but didn't have any sausage on it as stated on the menu. Couldn't order a vodka martini... only what was on the cocktail menu...which were a lot of sweet drinks, wine and beer. We had high hopes for this place, but we won't go again. Service was very bad and they were very unfriendly! It saddens me to write a bad review. I very rarely do, but I'm hoping they will improve their service and maybe learn from a bad review? I ended up joining some friends for a pub crawl halfway through and this was one of the stops. Upon entering, the place was filled with a sickening aroma of alcohol and vomit --to say the least, it was disgusting. Since it was a pub crawl event, the place was packed and busy, which made it that much more difficult to order a drink. At least the drinks are cheap here and we got two mixed drinks for £7. Obviously from the name of the bar, there is a mini Frankenstein show that happens every hour here though. If I could give negative starts I would. Not only did the staff have no clue how to make any of the drinks on THEIR menu, they were rude also. There were quite a few of them behind the bar and it was not crowded at the time. It was like they didn't want us there. They were out of my first two choices of pizza on their very limited menu. I heard them talk that they were out of a certain ingrediant to make their special drink and the one server had to ask the second one what to do, and they just left it out. I was there the week before Halloween and loved the ambiance and decor. It's such a great building with a very cool and creepy mad scientist vibe throughout. Frank is everywhere, and the show with him coming down on his slab and coming to life is a lot of fun. The disappointing thing was that it took over 25 minutes to get a very unsatisfying, mediocre, probably frozen pizza. And the place wasn't busy at all. Pretty fun joint located around the corner from our hotel. Our tour group had scheduled a NYE dinner here for 7pm and we were a bit nervous when the dishes that we had pre-ordered were taking a bit long to come out. Our Hogmanay tix said no admittance after 10pm so you could see where are nervousness was stemming from (we were a group of about 30 and another, larger tour group was also there). For my starter I had ordered the pea and ham hock risotto but it never made it to my table ( I think it stayed at our other tour group's table) but I shared what my table mates were eating. My entree was the salmon, and it as quite good, well cooked, but neede a little more flavoring, maybe even just some table salt would have given it the boost. I think i only had one bite of the Christmas pudding but at that point it was really time to schlep it over to the party so it had no lasting effect on me. Eh, Kind of a tourist trap. I mean, it is entertaining and all your first time out, but once you've seen the cheesy decor, it is just another club. No, this is mainly for the college and the tourist too confused to realize that this has nothing to do with Mary Shelley's classic tale published in 1818. I have a hard time imagining any self respecting local or yelper, saying, "Yup, this is my bar." However, I could be wrong, for the strange and unusual thrives in every country, I once spent an evening in a Russian Ice Bar in Nha Trang, Vietnam, so anything is possible, I guess. This restaurant was very unique and fun to visit. I stumbled upon this place while visiting Edinburgh and found it very interesting. There is a Frankenstein in the entry way that talks to you as you go by and once in the bar area, the decor is much like Frankenstein's laboratory. It was difficult to get service as it was quite busy in the bar but when I did get served, I had a Scottish beer and a classic burger and the food was average. I would recommend going here just for the experience though, it was very loud so if you don't like noise, maybe this place isn't for you. read more

It claims its world famous but I wouldnt waste a meal here (for me it was my last meal in Edinburgh :/). Slow service (we waited 40 minutes), menu that was out of burgers, steak and roast chicken, loud dining area and mediocre food. The sweet potato fries were a bit soggy, and we had to go to the counter to ask for water refills, if our order was coming, and to pay because the waitress never came to check on us at all. My party was able to get 20% off with the yelp check in instead of 10% off because they had no 10% off button, and "I have never heard of Yelp" and couldn't find a manager that did either. read more

I was the ripe old age of 22, traveling around Europe with my study abroad friends (years ago). We needed a bite to eat in Edinburgh and stumbled across this Frankenstein gem. Around the same time and prior to meeting me, my husband was in Edinburgh with one of his buddies. On a cold and dark February evening they felt the pull of the monster and also ended up at this bar 10+ years later we find ourselves back in Edinburgh, this time together. The nostalgia of our youth is strong and we just had to end the night at Frankenstein's. It was as amazing as we both remembered. Pop music blared from the speakers, a dude kept ordering Jägerbombs, the black and white film played on a loop, and the monster descending from the ceiling surrounded by smoke and fanfare. I enjoyed my Strongbow and took in the show. This place is totally worth it! So kitschy and amazing. read more

This place will definitely divide opinions - you either love it or hate it, and personally I'm not a huge fan. Some people love the fake cobwebs hanging down everywhere, or the fact that even at 3pm in the afternoon it's almost pitch black in there because of the themed gothic décor, or even the fact that at midnight on weekends the huge robotic frankenstein comes alive and is lowered down from the ceiling to flail around for a few seconds then go back up. It's not really my cup of tea. I will hand it to them, the place is huge and so if you're going on a pub crawl or even just on a normal night out with loads of people, there will almost definitely room for you there. However, at the same time that's also one of this place's biggest downsides... because it can so easily fit large groups there will always, always be at least 3 stag/hen groups in there on any given evening. Depends what sort of night you want. I think I'd have maybe given this place 3 stars if it weren't for the prices - I wouldn't mind being dragged along here by friends who seem to love this place if it were cheap, but expect to pay £3.50 for a pint... if you're lucky, the glass will be cold and/or clean. read more

Theme bar? Awful. It's always packed full of people waving Snapfaxes around (you can get some good deals admittedly). One of it's only good points is that it looks like it's been build by a theatrical set maker, looming bookcases in such a good building with one of those lightning balls above the bar. But it's not a nice atmosphere to be in, especially on a Friday or Saturday night and even when it's quiet it seems too lifeless. The bouncers can get a bit arsey but they must be used to so many Stag do's (and don'ts) and underage drinkers trying to get in they must be sick to death of George IV Bridge's general public. read more

Frankenstein is undoubtedly a student bar. The whole inside is decorated along the theme, almost over the top in places. I've been here once as part of a night out, and I can't say that I found my time in here amazing. It's the sort of place that someone may mention as part of a night out, but that will inevitably be passed by with a better offering elsewhere. If you're a student, then you'll love the whole decor and the days when they do free or cut price food. If you're not a student, you'll probably steer clear of here. It's not really a classy or sophisticated place, and don't get the impression it is. I'm sure they do big things at Halloween, but apart from then I can't really think of when I'd want to be going here. For what it is, it does well though. read more

A converted church, Gothic style interior, Mr Frankenstein making an appearance, fancy lights, nice whiskey and beer, Edinburgh center alcohol prices.....this pretty much sums up this place. My colleagues and I strolled by this place on a Thursday evening around 7.00pm and it appeared pretty much empty. We grabbed a high table in the center of the room and got ourselves some drinks. First it felt like we were the only people in there, but after half an hour the "Church" started filling up (people nestling into the comfy booths around the dance floor) and Mr Frankenstein came our from his hiding place. Loved that appearance. Spooky! I did not see much of a dance floor, and at the same time you don't really need much space to have a good time. There is plenty of "boogie space" if you don't try to outmaneuver other people, just to look good :-) It appears there is an upper floor, which would be suitable for private parties. Always a good one to celebrate your 21st BD! Shame I was there only for a short time, but it's definitely a place I would like to go back to. read more

Started being very short and Rude to us that she had to get another bottle. When she came back with the bottle I had a philly cheese steak that was lacking on steak and flavor. Scotch soup was good. Great bar to check out--especially as a tourist in Edinburgh. The Karaoke party downstairs is LIT. I did Regulate (Warren G/Nate Dogg) in front of a packed crowd. Pretty sure that 95% of the crowd had no idea what I was saying/didn't know the song, but I was still received with chest bumps and hugs before/after. The decor is really really cool--classic Frankenstein art work all over the place. And the chemical lab decor makes you feel like you're in the movie. A large mechanical Frankenstein machine normally descended from the top floor to the dance floor. Unfortunately, it was out of service when I visited. read more

The worst meal experience we've had in Edinburgh so far during our stay. We were 6 people who ate (burger, fried chicken, fries, chicken wings and soup) and each one of us was extremely disappointed. Poor taste, not fried enough and not enough spices. The burger was fried way too hard and the small salad piece on it didn't even look good enough to eat. Service could be better. They guy who handed out the utensils actually put them down by holding on the side of the fork you put in your mouth. Also was quite difficult to get their attention when wanting to pay. They do have an A/C so on a hot day it might be comfortable to walk inside but on the day we were there we were freezing. The only thing we were satisfied with was the beer.
