This place has the best Italian food I have ever tried. Also the doughballs are delicious. And the bar has the best beer.

As we sat down, we made our choices, and was expecting to be served, so we could order drinks/starters. But even though there were less than 3 tables in service, I had to go and find a server so I could order our drinks and meals. This could be forgiven if it were busy, but it was not, and there were plenty of staff just gazing into the void. When I managed to collar someone to make the order, we had to wait an extended length of time, for the over priced, poorly cooked food. When the mains arrived, probably 40 mins after ordering, both the burger, and the steak were EXTREMELY salty, and zero flavour depth. It was so salty, my mouth is still dry and burning as I write this review. You would normally expect, to be asked how the food is, during your meal. And genuinely wanting feedback, to add to value added work, to keep the business continually improving. But in the Firepit, it seems, nobody cares how your food is. We spent the whole meal, batting away flies, and choking on enough salt, to put us in perpetual hypertensive crisis. I mentioned to 2 staff members, how terrible the experience was, but nothing was mentioned to management, and to be quite honest, they didn't seem like they cared. In the restaurant business, you have to be monitoring customer experience closely, as you're only as good as your last weeks customers, so if this isn't actioned upon, I can see this space up for rent, very soon. At the Fire Pit, you pay city premiums, for terrible service/food/experience. This really is a pretentious venue, with zero quality control, or customer service. Experience is everything, and I can say wholeheartedly, they have missed the mark. Make sure you get the steak on a stone the first time. The sharer stone is great for couples. All the staff are great and the bar upstairs is really relaxed. Even the starters are great and the puddings make for a great way to end the night. Fairly expensive so go for a special occasion but you will not be disappointed. With the steak, the teriyaki dip is divine - definitely a must. Make sure you book a table and go hungry!

I am rarely this impressed by steak quality outside of the US. And the wine list! Orin Swift (the famous maker of Papillon), Stag's Leap, and lots of lesser known but still excellent brands from around the world. This is going to be my first stop next time I'm in York. My only comment -- but maybe this is just from an American used to farm-to-table food -- is that just like everywhere else in England, I wish there were fewer fried things and more vegetables on the menu (although the tomato side salad was amazing). Still the freshest, most farm-to-table type of meal I've had in York.

Waitstaff were very attentive and friendly. Hubby ordered onion rings which were hand battered and delicious. I ordered cod and vegetable risotto which were fine but not remarkable. Broccolini with blue cheese sauce barely had any blue cheese or sauce and was hard, not cooked really much at all. I left half of the serving. We had bread pudding for dessert which was also okay. I didn't find the seasoning of the food to be adequate and maybe salt and pepper on the table would have helped this. By the time our food came out, the waitstaff was busy so I didn't have a ready opportunity to ask for salt. And should I have to ask? This place has a charming interior but i'd suggest drinks here, not dinner.

When we arrived there and all through the night, there were at least 4 or 5 tables free so I'm not sure why we were told to take earlier seats. Secondly, when we arrived we were called over from the front door by the (I guess) front of house hostess, from the bar area where she was standing (perhaps 10ft away). She didn't show us to our table, she merely said, "around that corner there is your table". Poor service at best. At this point the restaurant was not busy at all. She had a face like sin and didn't appear to be in the best mood. Not a very good embassador for the place. BUT.. aside from this early poor interaction... Onto the other staff, waiters and waitresses etc, very impressed, well dressed, very polite, tentative, good vibe overall and we were looked after. The food, actually really nice, steak was massive and cooked to perfection. Large portions, exactly what we expected from a steakhouse. Veg was cooked well however the cauliflower cheese should be advertised as "cauliflower with cheese on top" as the cheese sauce was merely drizzled over the top of boiled cauliflower. But I would say we were (4 of us) all very happy with our food. Front of house lady didn't spoil our night (I suspect it was she who took my reservation phone call too) though it would have been a lot nicer if she met the same standards as the rest of her crew and food. Overall, we would definitely return. Thanks

I've already spied what I want from them next time - Steak Benedict with bread from Trove in Levenshulme! The best steak I have ever had in England was from a market stall? Crazy, but true. It was so good I could not return home without having it again. The chips were also very good as well. I highly recommend the tender cow!!!

Most of the places around there are full of people all dressed up getting hammered, but the Cask Corner is a great place to hang out with friends, play a board game, listen to some live music, or hear a comedian on comedy night. I've been there twice and the first time was extremely memorable. We happened to show up on the first Wednesday of the month which is comedy night. We sat through 4 mediocre comedians who mostly made fun of themselves and droll. I was slightly amused, probably more because I'm American and listening to local English comedians was funny just because of their different brand of humor. There was a main act and I am so glad we stayed for it. Jonathan Mayor performed and he was HILARIOUS. I have never seen a comedian in person who was so funny, and this was free entrance! The beer selection is interesting and the decor is definitely a conversation piece. The high ceilings make it feel open. The bathrooms are on the second floor and they don't always work, as I witnessed when I walked in on the barman and a lady in a lovely green dress with a long stick plunging the ladies toilet. Always something interesting going on in the Cask Corner. There's a great mix of different seating options as well as a pool table. Overall, a great addition to Doncaster town center.
