It started out terrible at my first appointment, with the dentist telling me I needed thousands of dollars of treatment, including replacing crowns and new crowns. I went back to my previous dentist (who is also a professor of dentistry) and asked for a second opinion and was told that they couldn't find any reason why that work should be done. For insurance reasons, I stuck with Franklin, figuring I know who I'm dealing with and that I could still get my teeth cleaned, etc., and just ignore their bogus treatment plans. But the cleanings were so inadequate I finally gave up on them... I don't think they ever spent more than 15 minutes on a cleaning. I also never felt that I could trust them not to damage my teeth on purpose so that I would need to have work done. So I changed to a different dentist. I requested that Franklin send my X-rays and their suggested Treatment Plans to the new dentist, but they never did. My understanding is that they are legally required to do this, but they did not despite repeated requests. So I ended up having to pay for new X-rays. All-in-all, going to a dentist that can't be trusted is a horrible experience and you should just stay away from Franklin Dental Care. read more

At first (2yrs ago) I loved this place, esp the head dentist who was kind, smart, patient and gentle. Today, upon arrival for a noon appointment, I was told they no longer accepted my insurance. Not good. Last visit, while having my teeth cleaned, the hygienist banged (BANGED) into my head EVERY time she swiveled her chair to jot down the sounding measurements of my gums (usually there is an assistant there to do this while the hygenist calls out the numbers). She had no clue even though I KEPT SITTING LOWER and LOWER in my chair to avoid the inevitable and highly inconsiderate head bumping. SIX TIMES she banged my head. Not good. Then they informed me I'd need "deep cleaning" = 2 $600 sessions because my gums were in trouble. Not good. Today i waited 45 minutes for a cavity to be filled. I left at 45 minutes as I did not want to get a parking ticket (meter was 1hr) and thought 45 minutes was enough. ONLY ONE PERSON THERE APOLOGISED. DO NOT GO HERE. At my first appointment with Dr. Yung I got the feeling that he was sketchy, because of the things he was saying.. Then, the he told me that my tooth was cracked and that I needed a crown. I thought this was strange so went to TDL dental, which is a premiere dentist I can't normally afford because they aren't in network with my insurance plan. I've been a Franklin Dental customer for a few years. No more anxiety on the day of a dental appointment. I trust them to provide state-of-the art and pain-free dental care. The chairs in the light-filled waiting and treatment rooms are comfortably padded and seem to be ergonomically designed. The offices are on the 12th floor so there's a view of downtown Oakland. I recently chipped a front tooth and the price was very reasonable for all the time and work it took to make it appear like my other front tooth. I give Franklin Dental 5 stars. read more

I wanted to share my experience because, after reading some previous reviews, I was initially a bit hesitant about visiting this place. However, I'm so relieved and happy that I did. From the moment I walked in, the entire staff was friendly and welcoming. Dr. Yung is absolutely the best--he's funny, put me at ease right away, and really calmed my nerves about being there. As someone who smoked for years and wasn't a regular at the dentist, I was definitely anxious. But I walked out feeling confident and very satisfied with the service. Although I do need some work done, Dr. Yung was honest and transparent, even taking pictures of my mouth to show me exactly what was going on. I knew he was being straightforward because my previous dentist told me the same thing. That made me feel so much better. The office itself has breathtaking views, which was a nice bonus, and they were able to offer me the dental work at a fraction of the cost compared to my last dentist. I honestly have nothing negative to say about them. My experience didn't align with the negative reviews I had read at all--I was in and out in about an hour, and everything was efficient. I've avoided the dentist for five years prior due to a bad dentist before but nothing could prepare me for my last experience here. I understood that my teeth were in bad shape, as I explained it took my therapist and I years to get me to the point where I could see a dentist again but the shame one of their Dr's put upon me was one of the reasons why I avoided it in the first place. "How did you let it get so bad?", as a patient to hear that from a doctor is unprofessional and humiliating. I was able to get a last minute appointment which I was grateful for and the immediate staff are always so nice. They understand the anxiety attacks I go through and always give me the time and space to feel comfortable. Dr. Yung and his assistants are amazing. However, the billing and payments are off. I understand inflation and insurance but it makes no sense to why they charged me so much. I asked for my dental records TWICE in one day and was denied with excuses by Vanessa in billing. The first time she said, "you're coming back later today, just remind me, I'll be busy!". My husband and I reluctantly agreed since I was in pain from my appointment and said sure since I'd be back in three hours. Fast forward to the end of the day after the worst dental experience of my life (which says a lot) and we ask Vanessa for our records AGAIN! She comes up with a lame excuse, "Oh, the girl that does that is gone for the day. Remind me again on Monday." We did not get any itemized receipt about all the services I received that day. I know this day in age you have to protect your boundaries but what "professional" only signs a document with their first name, seems like a loophole to avoid accountability. Everyone is overworked and busy in this economy but when you can not explain the services I'm getting and why I'm paying an arm and leg even with top tier insurance and you're making it seem like I'm high maintenance to just get an understanding to what's happening in my mouth and wallet is sad. read more

This place used to be good, before the acquisition. At a visit (after acquisition) I was told: 1) I had a small cavity and 2) abrasion to one tooth was risking nerve damage. I did not like the new operation anyway so I went to a different dentist who told me: 1) No cavity AND 2) the nerve had receded and there was no risk of nerve damage. I have to revise my reviews. Last year I was recommended to get a crown at Franklin Dental Care to solve a gap between two teeth. The crown cost over $1000 and did not solve my issue. When I complained the dentist I was seeing got up upset with me. Eventually she placed a filling that partially resolved the problem. Fast forward to my next visit. The dental technician did not know how to place an x-ray device in my mouth, I had the most painful cleaning of my life by the dentist (heat and high pressure?!) and then was told I needed six fillings and one abrasion fixed to the tune of over $1000, all apparently arising within the last 6 months. I have been going to Franklin Dental for over five years and had been happy with the service and treatment until this past week. Dr Yung was initially the DDs that saw me, I found him personable and professional but has not been available for several years. The two Dentists who I have seen were very good in the last couple years as well. This past week was entirely different. The hygienist was thorough but quite bossy, due to my teeth sensitivity while getting the cleaning. The young female Dentist came in very briefly to tell me that I needed to do bonding at my gums and proceeded to only talk about this requirement. When I told her I have had sensitive gums for years and have never been told by any of the other Dentists such extreme measures, she just said 'sorry'. When getting an estimate after this exchange, the office came up with a $1925 out of pocket estimate (no decay) for 'abrasion and filling' on 11 teeth. Plus I was told by the office I had a cavity, which had not been discussed by the Dentist at all. I told the office person the Dentist never told me about the cavity, got the same response, 'sorry'. How unprofessional is this, the office telling me, not the Dentist about a cavity, seemingly more interested in the $ estimate. I told the office person I was not going to do the work on my gums. Reading what someone else wrote about what appeared to be false cavities, I will cancel that appointment. As someone mentioned I have never seen the same hygienist and it appears they either do not stay, are not asked to remain or are from a temporary agency. Before going to Franklin Dental, I highly valued the consistency, familiarity and relationship built with the hygienists at my previous Dental office. She called to reschedule my (first!) appointment, which would've been totally chill if SHE had been totally chill. She kept snapping at me for asking simple questions such as what the earliest time of day that a patient can come in is and repeatedly tried to deter me from scheduling an appointment further out that would've actually fit my schedule. She eventually said that I could either take the appointment she was offering or I could move along... So that's what I was forced to do! I'm now seeing an awesome dentist downtown who respects me as a person and a patient and I couldn't be more delighted. I've been coming here for years and have almost stopped twice now. They are straight up crooks. AVOID. Aggressive with work. A rotating door of hygienist. I will admit two I've had over the last 4-5 years have been careful. They put you on a 'dental plan' and try and dictate the work you 'need' to do. My insurance covers two visits a year and they try and put me on a 4 visits a year pattern. I'm sorry no. I'm the consumer and choose the frequency of my visit. A year or so ago one of the people literally tried to guilt me into coming more often. I have 100% preventative coverage. I went in for a basic cleaning today and they tried passing it off saying i was getting basic work done, 'filling, X-rays.' No - you're wrong. I denied that - and specifically said I was coming twice a year JUST FOR CLEANINGS. Do yourself a favor and find another dentist office. read more

I would not recommend this dentist. I came in for a basic oral exam and xray. The dentist did not do a proper gum evaluation, only looked at two teeth and didn't do a full exam of my gum health. He recommended a regular cleaning when I was just told that I needed scaling and root. The xrays showed a cavity and he did request I get that taken care of. I did not come back for service because I did not trust the skills of the dentists at their office if they weren't able to provide a full exam properly. We changed insurance carriers and left the practice back in the fall of '21 that is when we found out this dentist was overcharging for unnecessary work. This came as a surprise when we started seeing an older more established practice which not only contradicted Franklin Dental but pointed out issues that they may have caused. For the record, I do not like writing reviews like this, but we had several issues with our bills where we owed more money while receiving recommendations and pressure for unnecessary work. Below were unnecessary procedures/expenses: 1) The deep cleaning was done in a manner that was not only painful (to be expected) but ended up pushing plaque particles down into my partner's root which showed up on an x-ray. On top of that, they try and push a $600 night guard which is twice as expensive as the most expensive one out there. 2) My teeth do not show signs of grinding nor has anyone I ever slept next to commented on it happening. 3) Finally the last straw was that we opted out of 4 cleanings per year yet they charged us for the non-insurance-covered cleanings in the form of a co-pay on each dentist visit. We rechecked with the insurance and the visits were supposed to be 100% covered and the math on the co-pay added up to the price of a noncovered cleaning. On top of this, some other red flags were how inexperienced the hygienists were, broken windows, consistently disconnected phone number, and how others in the lobby also seemed to have other patients with bill discrepancies every time I visited. I was in no pain when I went in to repair a chipped tooth until the dentist intentionally stabbed his little poker so deep inside my tooth that he created a hole which he then "discovered" when I returned for my new crown. Due to the "discovery" of this puncture wound that HE created, he suddenly decided that I needed extensive additional treatments. I had already paid him for a crown and I just wanted my crown but he refused to put on the crown unless I agreed to one (or possibly two, he said) gum procedures. This was all insane for a chipped tooth but I felt held hostage because I had already paid him for my crown. My gut told me to get a second opinion. I found a highly regarded dentist to put on the crown, no gum surgery required. I asked Franklin dental to refund my copay. But when the new dentist billed my insurance he was denied because Franklin Dental had already billed my insurance for the crown they never gave me!! I asked Franklin dental Multiple times to revise their bill to reflect that they never placed a crown in my mouth. but they never did so I had to pay for the new dentist all Out of pocket. Shady af. They Caused me severe pain and astronomical expense. And to top it all off they got paid for work they never did. I've sat with this for months and I'm still so shocked and saddened hence this review. I still feel violated by this whole experience. I will never forget this feeling. read more

Great dentist! I've had bad experiences before with dentists trying to upcharge me and this has never happened at Franklin Dental. My dentist even said I could use the CVS type bite guard for teeth grinding, saving me $300+! Up front with what fillings cost based on my insurance, and fixed one up for free that had been causing sensitivity issues since they placed it. There have been times I've had to wait but nothing crazy, or more than expected. Many times I'm taken back almost immediately (I do try to schedule first AM or first after lunch appt). Hygienists are usually either very efficient, or more chatty but very nice. My dentist remembers not only my name but something I mentioned about general life things at my last appointment, even months later. Love getting to look out at the city from the high up windows I can't speak to parking because I can walk from home - lucky me! In the past I have had a few times where they call needing to reschedule my appointment. Having worked at a medical office, I know things happen and it's one of the crappiest jobs of the front desk to reschedule a ton of people to what is already a full schedule. I would like to give my review. I feel that it is very important to let everyone know, that i have grown so much mentally. I have been very intentional in expanding my mindset. With that being said, i have been coming to this place for well over 5 years. Today I had an experience that i will remember for the rest of my life. The way i was cared for is service I pray I get everywhere I go. He was very informative, very considerate, passionate, and pleasant. He checked in with me before the process. Explained to me what he would be doing. Throughout the exam, he checked in with me ever so often. He explained everything professionally and with an amazing tone where i heard and understood everything he was explaining to me. He asked if i had any questions and he even gave me recommendations on different electronic toothbrushes I should consider using to help safeguard my gums. What is even more amazing he didn't tell me what he was doing he asked me if i felt his plan for the work I needed ok. I felt very safe with Dr. Oliver. They will email all the new patient forms to you so you can complete them before coming in or you can download them from their web site. Pros: Dr. Yung seems knowledgeable and to take appropriate courses of treatment. He answers questions and explains things clearly. He shows pics of the issues so I can see where treatment is necessary and don't need to blindly trust. Cons: Scheduling is a problem. I've been rescheduled multiple times, availability is limited, appointments seem to start usually about 30 minutes late (especially an issue with time-limited and $$ city parking) and run long from waiting in the chair as providers jump between patients. Over-booked providers seem pressed for time and I worry that rushed work is not best work. Miscommunication at the front desk seems common, they've been incorrect about the treatments the doctor recommended, the timeline to schedule them, called to confirm the wrong day, been unable to find my confirmed appointment on arrival. Admin needs to lower the patient load and organize better to get 5 stars. read more

So obviously I've been a Franklin Dental patient for a long time. I used to have good experiences with them, as evidenced by my past review, but in the past 1.5 years, things have really gone downhill. First, they forgot I needed a cleaning. I'm the one that had to call *them* to schedule it instead of getting a reminder card/email/telephone call. I called multiple times, and emailed them, before receiving a call back. And when I did, they had no record of my attempts to call them previously. Once the appointment was on the books, it had to be rescheduled. Twice. I can forgive that because life in a pandemic, you know? There are circumstances we can't control. When I finally went in for my cleaning, I sat in the waiting room for FORTY MINUTES. No good reason. They weren't running behind. In fact, other patients came in after me and were seen before I was. They simply. . .forgot I was there, or didn't let the hygienist know or whatever. They apologized profusely and again, I chalked it up to the pandemic and let it slide because they'd never done that to me before. It turned out I had a cavity so needed to come back. I told the dentist (I don't remember her name unfortunately) that I'm very sensitive and don't need much in the way of anesthetic. A little goes a long way with me. She put the anesthetic in my mouth and then gripped my cheek, shaking it multiple times to get the anesthetic flowing. Maybe that's standard but I've never had a dentist do that before. When the anesthetic wore off, my *mouth* didn't hurt but my cheek sure did. In fact, it was swollen for a week. I'm sorry, but third time's a charm for me and I no longer trust Franklin Dental. Dr. Norman Yung is great but the other dentists not so much. And it's a crapshoot what your hygienist will be like, how the staff will respond, etc. It's really too bad considering how long I've been a patient. The experience turned me off so much I'm seeing a different practice for my next cleaning. read more

However, I needed more immediate care and they were extremely accommodating and got me in for an exam the same day I called. I don't often leave reviews, let alone reviews for dentists but Dr Chen and the team at Franklin Dental were fantastic. I came in as a new patient after about 2 years of not going to the dentist. The assistant took x rays and then Dr Chen took the time to explain precisely what he would recommend, listened to my input, and came up with a great care plan. When I came back for fillings, dr Chen was very attuned to any discomfort and made adjustments as needed. When done, he took the time to answer questions. These might seem like small things but you don't always get them with busy dentists and I appreciated them. The staff did a good job talking through my insurance and billed everything properly, again kind of table stakes but a lot of providers don't do it these days. The reception staff is not particularly friendly which I think is contributing to the handful of negative reviews here but that's pretty easy to get over if you're not an entitled Yelp superuser. read more

My family and I have been coming to Franklin Dental for the past 2 years. The staff is unfailingly helpful and kind--walking through options, helping with billing considerations and generally being decent human beings. I've never had a surprise bill and they even work with my not-great dental insurance. Dr. Yung has spent way more than a reasonable amount of time explaining the pros and cons of care options, and the care he puts into oral / dental health is very clear. Reposting, Yelp removed my review because it included the phone number needed to file a complaint with the dental board. You can google this info. Read on to see why its important. This dentist office is old and run down with no parking. The dentist will recommend unneeded services to scam you in attempt to keep his failing practice afloat. I experienced it firsthand. I fell for all of the fake 5-star reviews here (you can identify these by all of the people who've only written 2 or 3 reviews in their existence) seriously, your 1 and only review is going to be of a dentist office? Anyway, I provided my own x-rays. I emailed them 6 or 7 times while in the office. They insisted they didn't receive them, finally I stood over the receptionist shoulder and saw all of my emails in their inbox RED FLAG#1. Next the dentist said my x-rays were blurry and insisted he needed to retake them and said he could just bill my insurance RED FLAG#2. I let him know that I wasn't having it and he would need to make do with what I provided. What should have been RED FLAG#3 was the fact that they use generic products (mouthwash, tooth polish, etc.) Normally this is ok, but in the dental industry big pharma gives free name brand products to reputable dentist. Clearly no one has faith in this place. Finally RED FLAG #4! The Dentist started measuring my gums and tried to diagnose me with "periodontist gum disease" and tried to sell me on a "deep cleaning". I'm the type of person that gets complimented on my teeth by people all the time, I floss daily and get a cleaning every 4-6months. So I wasn't buying into his nonsense. I let him know that I am not the one, got up out of the chair and reported him the dental board on my drive home. I had a cleaning a couple of days later at my normal Dentist, they laughed when I told them my experience with Franklin Dental and said, guys like this get into the industry and "play the game of over billing insurance when business starts to fail", the only way to stop it is to report it to the Dental board & your insurance company. read more

I have no complaint about the dental care. A Dr. Grant cleaned my teeth and explained some things about what he found. He was great. My complaint is that "communication " could be improved. After my cleaning this morning, I was led back to the waiting area and told to "have a seat". Since I was paid up, why I was supposed to "have a seat" and wait, wait for what? There are 5 reasons why I don't recommend going there 1) Untrained Staff- The woman who took my x-ray put a big object in my mouth (not sure what it's called) and told me to bite down. I repeatedly complained that the object was too big and trying to bite down and close my mouth was hurting me as the object dug in to the soft flesh under my tongue. But she made no adjustments. I have taken many dental X-rays before but none as painful as the one at Franklin Dental 2) Dirty Instruments- I accidentally looked under one of the instruments they were using and it was so dirty! I almost gagged. I decided never to return there again. I'm mean, seriously, are you kidding me? 3) No chair covers- Normally all doctors offices I go to have disposable chair covers in the seat/beds patient are expected to use. But they had no covers. And I wonder how well they really disinfect the seat after each use. 4) Not Covid Safe- You have to go through many narrow, enclosed hallways & elevators to reach this office. Because I had to share the elevators and hallways with other patients who had appointment near the same time as me, I did not feel safe. The office also felt really crowded without inadequate space for social distancing. 5) Unnecessary procedures- Well, this is just a gut feeling, and I felt they were trying to push unnecessary procedures on to me. When my current dentist stopped taking DeltaCare, I scheduled with Franklin Dental, and got suckered into the age-old scam that unscrupulous dentists use on new patients. It took about 4 months to get a new patient appointment, at which time I was told I had decay under 2 of my fillings, and I also asked that a chipped tooth be repaired. They showed me the estimate but didn't give me a copy, and told me that the services I needed were almost never covered by dental insurance. That should have sent up a red flag, because it seemed like having two fillings replaced and a chipped tooth should have been covered, but I'd waited so long to see a dentist that I didn't look through the estimate as thoroughly as I should have. A week later I had the work done, and noticed during that they had patched a different tooth than the one that was actually broken and that I'd requested. A tooth that was not, in fact, broken. I had to ask them to go back and patch the broken one. I sat there quietly while they did their work, and the dentist kept telling me I was doing a good job, and that he was proud of me as if I was a nervous child. After leaving the office I thought about the cost and that there must be some mistake. I've had the same coverage for years and have never been billed more than a nominal copay. I called my insurance and explained what I'd had done. The rep said that they were in the process of authorizing services and I should have a copay of $190, although Franklin had already charged almost $1,000 to my credit card. She suggested I ask for the other 700 and change back. I asked for an estimate showing the insurance payment breakdown, and they sent me something that made it look like they hadn't billed the insurance, and also didn't appear to list the correct services. It listed three chipped teeth/no decay, but no filling replacements or drilling. I spoke to someone by phone and email at Franklin who told me that I just didn't understand how dental procedures work, and refused to even take a look at my bill. While I accepted that the dentist said that I needed services to prevent future decay, I believe that in addition to billing errors, some of the work they performed was cosmetic and unnecessary. They were not at all upfront about that. I am now filing a grievance with the insurance company. Do yourself a favor and just find a dentist who will work for a cash rate. You will end up saving money versus paying there "copays". read more

Although I had a good first experience here - I have since decided to move on from this provider. My main reason is due to their inability to perform a cleaning/check-up and address any issues I may be having such as tooth pain. Every other dentist I have had has been able to tackle two issues in one visit and not extend things out to make me have to make two visits and also have more out of pocket expenses. I would recommend finding another dentist with more convenient billing/scheduling practices. read more
