Dance like an Egyptian!…read more I first started taking classes at Hannan's Belly Dance Studio (now Egyptian Dance Academy) back in 2005 and have made this my dance home ever since. Whether you just want to burn off some calories or become a professional dancer, the Academy has something to offer. The studio owner and artistic director, Nada El Masriya, grew up in Egypt, trained with the famous Reda troupe, and regularly returns to Egypt to stay in touch with what's current in the belly dance scene there. She makes sure to pass this knowledge on to all her instructors, so you know you're getting the real thing. If you want to push yourself further, the studio also offers lots of workshops and opportunities to perform. Above all, the classes are so much fun! Seriously, if you want to tone your arms, would you rather pump iron in a sweaty gym, or float around gracefully like a goddess while listening to fabulous music?

They have a check in table when you walk in, get your heels (if you want), get changed and head over to the studio where there were plenty of poles for you to choose from. The entire experience and our instructor was amazing. It's something that none of us have ever done before so it was brand new to the entire party. The entire experience was fun but very hard, as some moves were difficult to do as a newbie. I love that they had spray bottles for each station so that you can wipe your pole before and after your lesson, since there was another group before us. The entire space is also covered with mirrors for you to check yourself out/ see if you're doing the moves properly. Overall, such a great experience and fun activity to do with friends! Highly recommend this for a bachelorette party!

Came here to attend one of the restorative yoga class in the smaller room across from the main studio. I can only comment on the facilities since the classes I attended is not one of the class on the regular schedule and the class was excellent! The room is really small and can only fit 5 student comfortably. I do like small class size but the floor is just really dirty and dusty. There are though enough props to go around. Noise level is quite high as it is facing Queen Street and you can even feel the vibration while lying on the floor if there is a "party" or a class going on next door. I though interest in one of their regular Pole Dancing Class, I definitely would try to come back to take one soon. Or maybe even organize a bachelorette or a divorce party here!

Incident Jan 27th: My daughter completes her dance class and is getting dressed to go home... but wait...her running shoes are missing!!! I go into that change room looked in the lost and found... cubbies...corners... other girls bags..NOTHING. At this point I am disgusted!! Now my daughter is leaving barefoot to get to the car?? Are you serious?? My husband calls a dance teacher who is the owners Barry's daughter..as useful as a brick wall! I expressed my frustration and include it is ridiculous that you pay hundreds of dollars and now how to worry about petty theft.... seriously! ! I also included this is why I prefer my child to bring her personals with her to class so they are safe. She wanted to know why am I getting mad at her...does she want me to give my daughter her shoes so she can get home?? Matter of fact..YES!!! The owner Barry could care less..until I posted on their site a review outlining our experience and suggesting whom ever took the shoes bring them back and teach their daughter about stealing. Low and behold my husband gets a call after my post 3 hrs later indicating they found my daughters shoes in the corner?!?! The same corner I looked in myself?!?! What a miracle... and that my daughter can leave their school !!! This place has no integrity. Come to find out through other parents who also have children that go their that theft is a regular thing and they don't do much about it! So I guess it must be very annoying for someone like me to speak up about the principal of things. Barry did refund my husband for costume fees..However I will be pursuing the rest of my fees via small claims court.

I've only been to classes in the first floor (zumba, Wednesday nights and Sunday morning), but I attend quite regularly so I'm in and out of there pretty regularly. While it's definitely a great location (hello monopoly!) and I am so grateful for it's existence, it could definitely use an upgrade. The floors are in great shape which is of course the most important feature of a dance studio, but it is lacking in quite a few other areas, mainly the air conditioning (um, there is none) and the washrooms (why are you so tiny and dingy?). Even with it's downfalls, Dovercourt House is still a great part of the neighbourhood.

Reasonable rental costs if you're throwing an event. Has simple kitchen facilities on each floor. The manager Andy is a great guy and very helpful. It can feel a bit run down on occasion, but that's just part of its charm. Pop by any Friday or Saturday night and there will be a ton of happy people enjoying multiple kinds of dancing.

However, while the people were friendly, I found this studio to be a bit disorganized. a) The owner didn't know how much to charge me because I signed up through Meetup. She had to ask me how much the website said. b) The classes they were posted were not the ones offered. They alternated, so I was attending a class that I didn't really want to be in. However, the instructor was willing to change it. c) They said they had a big event the previous night, and we're still cleaning at 4 pm. Not very professional. There are better studios out there.

Its not as easy as it looks and for a beginners class (1hr) you work up a sweat. For first timers we were a bit rough in execution but did not let that take away from the fun we all had, both the music and positive attitude that come through in Chenagne's class makes me want to come back and try another style of dance. The studio is a bit small but can hold 5 - 10 people but any more and I feel it would be too crowded, there are change rooms upstairs and the studio is easy to get to as it is a 5 min walk from Ossington Station.
