This burger and fried chicken spot is 100% worth the hype! I didn't realize they were featured on Food Network but totally makes sense. This is a place to take your family or friends, not from Texas, that come to visit. Or, if you're just hankering for some good ol' comfort food. The portions are huge, the food is flavorful and you can't go wrong with any menu item. Even though the place was packed (always a good sign) our waitress stayed on top of everything and made sure we were taken care of. Great food, great service, and definitely a spot I'd go back to. Fred's gets a modest upgrade to 3 stars. While it's never quite lived up to what I want it to be, it's also not as frustrating as my earlier experiences made it feel. The location is convenient, the patio is still a nice draw, and the burgers are solid, even if they're on the pricey side for what you get. The atmosphere is casual and familiar, and it's an easy place to stop in without much planning. Service can still feel hit-or-miss, and the value doesn't always line up with the cost, but overall the experience has been... fine. Nothing exceptional, nothing terrible. I'm going to park this right here! One of the best burgers we have had in a long time. The hamburger is seasoned and Juicy, (perfectly cooked) the bun is light and airy with the right amount of toasting. 2 slices of tomatoes, with cheese, extra pickles, onions, mayo and mustard. Pure perfection. The fries arrived hot and seasoned. I'd challenge anyone to find a better burger in DFW. To whom ever could eat "the big Fred" deserves a medal! Service was exceptional. Slow moving on being greeted to be seated, but not a deal breaker to ruin our evening. Hostess was really nice and sat us right away in the bar area. Our waiter the bartender greeted us soon after to take our drink order. I would recommend the Hot Pink and Paloma. Both are excellent drinks! I ordered the Fred burger with fries and it was so good! Food came out in a timely manner after placing order. The music in the restaurant is perfect for an evening out. We had a party of 8, and our waitress was very attentive and took great care of us. The portions are huge, the food was well seasoned, and we all left happy. Met a friend here for an early dinner on a Tuesday night and was very pleased with the experience. Our lovely server was always smiling and very attentive, checking on us frequently without being pushy. The burgers are great and the sweet potato fries were delicious. Note: Burgers are cooked medium rare to medium. Be sure to let your server know if you want the center cooked all the way through. (Our server didn't ask how we'd like them done and I wish I'd mentioned my preference.) The restaurant is also a bit loud (even at 5pm on a Thursday), but we could still hear each other fine for conversation. Fred's was okay! We liked our actual meal, which consisted of the Original Fred's Burger and Chicken Fried Steak sandwich. However, our starter wasn't that great as the queso tasted like it was re-heated/not fresh. The chips were alright. We hardly saw our waitress except at the beginning when she took our order, a totally different person brought our food. We assumed she was the only one working but we could have been wrong. These days it seems to be the norm for one server be on a shift serving every table. Regardless, we received our food in a timely matter. 2 hours for kids tenders and nachos! The food was super cold on top of that. The server was really trying to support multiple areas. The other kids were standing around, no sense of urgency. We met here because its central to all the adult offspring. WOW we where impressed. Sat in the bar area and had a magherita(frozen) it was very good and only one needed. (I think they may have specials but we didnt have the timing right, however the price was fine) Several of us got burgers and they where big and did not disappoint. Came with fries and you can upgrade them to loaded. My daughters both did and they where covered and smothered in cheesy goodness. I've been here twice and it's been pretty solid both times.The first time it got the cheese burger and fries.The burger was nice and hot and pretty juicy.The fries were hand cut and were pretty good.No complaints.Now the second time I came in I got the chicken club sandwich and substituted onion rings for the fries.I wish the guy would I've told me there was a up charge of 3 bucks for the rings.The club sandwich was pretty big and I could barely finish it.The only complaint about the sandwich was the chicken was a bit dry.As far as the onion rings go they are hand breaded and were pretty solid.The only thing about this place they are a bit pricey.I think my last bill was 24 bucks plus tip.Thats a little much for lunch.I still like this place and will be back.Just not all the time.But I will pop in every now and then. read more

I know I am not alone in lamenting the passing of the original Fred's on Currie. Even back on Currie Street I was not a fan of the Fort, and especially of the newer Fort (well, except for that new restroom. LOL). If we could not find a booth or seat at the bar in the area next to the kitchen, we left for another destination until another day not far away. The new place on Camp Bowie leaves me colder than a frozen Thanksgiving turkey. But, hey, the food. And the Cold Ass beer. It is still served in the old, comfortably familiar ice-frosted glasses. How can one resist this? One cannot. At least this one. The Diablo burger still works its wicked, spicy sorcery much to one's delight. The light, crispy crusted onion rings still demand a second order. There is still table service in these days of counter ordering. Yeah, it's more of a trek now from the Mid-Cities to west FTW, but it's a trek that is well worth the time and effort. Long live Fred's! read more

The burgers are good. However, we ordered the chips and queso to start. The chips tasted like they were fried in paint. Seriously tasted like paint. We didn't eat them. We told the waitress. It's Sunday football and we chose Fred's texas cafe! You seat yourself (so you can see the screens you want to). Our waitress was pretty quick to take our drink order. It was my first time here but it was my boyfriend's 2nd time. He said the loaded chips and queso were good. So we ordered that. I was feeling something a little sweet today and decided to get the badlands bbq burger. Food came out. I'd say the chips were all right. Maybe 1/5. The texture of the bite wasn't quite right to me. Whether it was too hard or too soft, but the queso was pretty good! 5/5 For the burger, I'd say the bun is like a 10/5. Upon first glance the bun looked soft. But that extra toast on the bottom takes it home. That extra mile goes a long way. Each bite was so crispy/crunchy. My boyfriend's burger didn't have the same toastiness, so consistency could be better if that's what they were going for. But if it was on accident I'd say it was a lucky mistake for me ;) Other things that stood out to me were the pickles. I love pickles so I'm glad these were good. They have bite and flavor! The normal parts of the burger were good too so no complaints from me there (onions, bacon, etc). Lastly, I liked my boyfriend's onion rings, and I'm not an onion ring girl. The sauce that it comes with is pretty good too. I also tried the loaded fries and I'd say they were good, not bad. For my other impressions, I would've thought the bbq burger would actually have bbq sauce in it but it didn't have any at all lol. Maybe I read the description wrong. Next time I'd like to try the fried pickles and probably a different burger, like the burger of the month! I didn't know about it till after. This month's burger is the zaraguza burger. I think this place is good for the sports. I feel like the fans/customers are a lot more lively/vocal than other places I've been to. We found this little gem of a burger place just in time to hit our craving of a good lunch. The burgers were well seasoned and cooked. I opted out of the fries which are sold separately but do taste homemade and fresh only lightly salted with no added seasoning. My Serrano burger was spicy and honestly too hard for me to eat in one bite because it was piled up pretty high with the veggies! No complaints it was good and filling. Not having the fries was perfect for me. My partner chose the Diablo burger which was just as great! The chipotle butter sauce was delicious and made the burger what it was. I was able to try out their chipotle ranch -sauce girl here- and it was a nice dipping sauce to try on my burger and a couple fries I stole. The price of the combo is a little too high for my liking on the meal overall and is why I'm giving the place 3 instead of 4. The place was very spacious and comfortable despite the large lunch crowd. Our service was on point the whole time. The menu is pretty straight forward. Half-pound burgers with plenty of options, various sides such as fries & onion rings, and a few other things such as chicken fried steak and tenders. They also have an off-menu side salad. We ordered the standard Fred Burger which comes by default with LTPO and mustard, which in my opinion is the perfect base for a good burger. I added grilled jalapenos and grilled onions and they were awesome. This was the best 75 cents worth of jalapeno add-on I've ever had. I got my burger medium rare and the other burger was the default medium. The cook/temp was pretty spot on. Most places overcook everything so you can just go with the medium without having to compensate for overcooking by ordering medium rare.
