When I had a crisis in my life, I've always had a Rabbi to turn to. When I was looking to put down new roots in 2012, I found out that there was a wonderful conservative synagogue in Hoboken and went to become excellent friends with him and his family. In 2016, my family and I moved to Bayonne as Hoboken was pricing us out ($4500 for a 2-BR seemed like a bit much). I have had numerous health issues and was not able to attend high-holiday services in 2016. Imagine my surprise when the Rabbi from Temple Emanu El came to my door to blow the Shofar and say the prayers with me. He took a break in-between services to do this for me. FOR ME?? How lucky I felt that day and how, to this day, I have NEVER forgotten such a deed. Like other reviewers, I am not a fan of how Reform Judaism conducts their services. No dis-respect to them, but I don't like the pipe organs, I don't like the abbreviated prayers, etc. Reform Judaism is wonderful for some, but others want something more traditional. Orthodox Judaism has always presented to be too rigid. Women can't sit with the men, Shabbat MUST be observed in full tradition, you can't drive to services, etc. etc. Conservative Judaism meets in the middle. Yes, you can have the traditions of the same Judaism you had when you were little, but not everything is SO rigid. You can breathe, sit with your wife, your sister, your daughter, your mother and be welcomed with open arms. You can recite the prayers in full as they are meant to be said and also include women in the them. It's a traditional, pluralistic, egalitarian version of Judaism that I have always loved. Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This porridge is cold, this porridge is too hot, this one.. this one is just right. That's what I love so much about the United Synagogue of Hoboken and that's what my family and I experienced at Temple Emanu El in Bayonne. You and your family are welcome to enjoy as much traditional Judaism as you wish to enjoy.

It is also a synagogue that hosts Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the basement. Yes, I'm not religious. Neither am I an alcoholic. Yet I find a lot of reasons to visit this synagogue, among them the amazing murals of Louis Pierre Rigal depicting a lion, deer and eagle. And the glorious stained glass that casts an ethereal sunlit glow to the synagogue in the mornings. Go and visit, you need not be religious nor be an alcoholic to find it worthwhile.

Rabbi Pearl and his family set the tone for how to make Shabbat special. I wish I lived closer, I recently moved to Bayside from Astoria. I also want my daughter to be surrounded by such wonderful Jewish spirit. The service are truly wonderful and engaging for young, old and everyone in between. Most Jews have never heard of Reconstructionism, although many non-Orthodox Jews share the values it espouses. It's true; I'm a fan…read more FIrst, the gripes. No one said hello or good shabbes to me when I walked inside. We did not say a misheberach (healing) prayer. The Rabbi and Chazan / Cantor-guy never introduced himself as far as I can remember. There were not that many people there and I felt strange being one of the few single women there. One man took it upon himself, to scorn SF and while I'm trying to find him endearing (it is Shabbas and all), it made me want to belt him. Oh and services were at 6:30pm so I didn't have time to eat dinner beforehand. The good stuff: People wore jeans and women wore Kippot!! Once I said hello and Gut Shabbes, most people responded with hearty welcomes. They asked me questions and tried to help me find their ex-interim Rabbi when I went back to SF. There was a big rainbow flag that seemed to wink at me when I approached the shul. The songs were beautiful. The Cantor-guy had the most AMAZING voice and the Rabbi also had wonderful vocal power. The Rabbi was female and the service was egalitarian. She had a lovely way of involving the congregation and inviting us to meditate a bit. Plus, the people I sat next to were sweethearts. All in all, I am glad I went and I would go again.

As preliminary, I am a physician in Fargo, North Dakota. I was raised orthodox Jewish and went to…read morean orthodox yeshiva in Coney Island. I graduated with highest honors as Valedictorian from Yeshiva Sharei Zedek. Although my ex-wife's father was Jewish, her mother was not, and so my ex-wife went through a full orthodox conversion over two years. We provided the conversion certificate signed by three orthodox rabbis to Rabbi Hecht. We also provided proof of the Mikvah for the conversion. The Rabbi who directed the conversion over the two years was a well regarded orthodox Rabbi recognized by the Israeli Rabbinate. My ex-wife continued to be Shomer Shabbos and maintained a kosher home throughout our marriage. We were living much of the time in the Midwest and attended the only available synagogue which was reform but maintained ourselves as orthodox Jews. Our family recently moved to Fargo, ND and, because of my ex-wife's conversion, there was a need for proof that she converted to orthodox Judaism. Our Chabad rabbi recommended reaching out to the Chabad Beth Din in Brooklyn led by Rabbi Mordechai Hecht. We reached out to Rabbi Hecht and provided all required documents to him. I do not know Rabbi Hecht well, but I recall wonderful orthodox rabbis during my years in yeshiva and afterwards, including our head Rabbi Mallen Galinsky and Rabbi Alconon Scheinerman and Rabbi Picus from Seagate, Brooklyn Rabbi Mordechai Hecht is not cut from their cloth. Before Rabbi Hecht even initiated an evaluation, we were informed by our local Rabbi that Rabbi Hecht questioned the legitimacy of the rabbi who diligently instructed my ex-wife and is recognized by the Israeli Rabbinate Moreover, he infrequently responded to requests for help. It was difficult to get any response from him. Finally, once proof was provided--and after a prolonged delay and repeated requests with no response--we received a denial of status. When I responded to his delayed email and asked for guidance regarding the denial, he never responded, nor did he provide an explanation for the denial. Again, I know little about Rabbi Hecht. I do not know him personally, nor do I know the other rabbis in the East Flatbush Beth Din, but given my wonderful experience throughout my life with caring, dedicated rabbis--and a quite different experience with Rabbi Hecht--I would recommend against this Rabbi--and by extension--the Beth Din of East Flatbush--based on his lack of professionalism and the lack of caring that should be the cornerstone of Rabbinical character in our community
