I had my first taste of Freeland Spirits' rum cast bourbon at last Friday's MadeherePDX evening event and was hooked. The next day, I traveled to their tasting room and bought a bottle on the spot. One of the women owners helping me was friendly and extremely knowledgeable about her spirits. In that regard, it was like being told the time and how the watch was running. :) The bourbon bottle will have to go in my checked baggage, and it will be all good. I maybe should have also bought a bottle of gin for Gayle, but since she's picky, she'd need to taste if first. Maybe next time for that bottle and a tasting tour. The tasting room has been here for a little less than 2 years and is located in NW Portland not for from the distinctive old Montgomery Wards building. It's a handsome space, which includes a tasting bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and a pretty good food and beverage menu. Gin and bourbon both have their own cult followings and rightfully so. They're both distinctively delicious. So, how could one like gin and bourbon even more? If that's not enough, reduce available inputs to 99% Oregon local and you have an even more craft product truly reflecting the bounty of the PNW. That, distilled down, is Freeland Spirits. The owner, Jill Freeland, brings her Texas upbringing and agricultural background partnered with female distillers and farmers and applied it to all that Oregon has to offer and is making some truly distinct libations. Currently offering 4 products, the delicate flagship gin is still the main stay and golden child of the company. While juniper is still present, it highlights the other botanicals and incorporates them by way of cold distillation to preserve their delicate oils and deliver purity and intensity in flavor. Their dry gin punches up the juniper and the punch to your senses as a more traditional gin. Their geneva is a whiskey-adjacent base distilled with botanicals and has a heavier body and smokier notes from a different botanical mix. (pro-tip: would be great for autumnal cocktails!). Lastly, their bourbon is a well- rounded and supple easy drinker in the category finished in local pinot noir barrels. Do not sleep on their canned cocktails! Pop 'em, pour 'em, garnish 'em and you're done! Instant happy hour at home or a quick way to entertain guests at home. They're balanced and delicious! Plus, their staff are all equally knowledgeable and can help point you in the right direction of the spirit that may be right for your needs and give you some pointers one uses, cocktails, and maybe even recipes! Freeland spirits makes gin and bourbon-two spirits I did not like prior to trying theirs. The tasting room has some snacks, tasting flights, and mini cocktails. It is more ideal if you have a day off since they close early and have private events. For the holidays they have offered free local delivery of spirits and mixers. The mixers are delicious and pair well with the spirits. The tasting room is trendy, comfortable, and requires proof of COVID vaccination. I highly recommend this business. read more

If you haven't been to Freehand Spirits, put it on your list. What a fun and cute place. When we were there they had a DJ and food. Their specialty cocktails are fantastic. I love Negroni's so had to try their Forest Negroni which uses their Freeland Forest Gin, Luxardo bitters, Cinzano Bianco and grapefruit bitters. So good I had two! What a hidden gem. Take the time to visit this place and do the bourbon and gin distillery tour. $20 gets you a really cool tour of the distillery, two mini drinks and a flight mixture of three different gins/bourbon. Casey was our tour guide and she was awesome. She is so knowledgeable and friendly. I believe there is happy hour 3-5pm which we didn't take advantage of bc what was offered with the tour was plenty. The entire staff was friendly and service was great. I will definitely be back. read more

I have been feeling a little sick for several hours after a drinking half of a tasting flight. From touring their facility, they are purchasing bulk ethanol to use as the base of their gin (they have huge vats of it on the production floor, from out of state suppliers such as "Golden Triangle Energy" despite claiming to source 99% of ingredients from Oregon?) Ethanol can be prepared for human consumption by filtering it through activated charcoal or treating it with ozone to remove impurities... but as far as I could tell they did not have equipment to do either, nor did they mention doing so as part of the production process. They seem to be macerating the herbs directly in the ethanol and then redistilling it, which is not enough to remove impurities from the ethanol. The resulting products smell good but have a cloying oily quality when consumed and produce headaches, etc. I wanted to like it, but all I can say is beware.. read more

Every place is understaffed right now so just be grateful that you get to go to this wonderful place called Freeland Spirits, enjoy their amazing gins and whiskeys and their lovely staff. I love everything about Freeland...woman-owned, run, operated and more importantly they make some damn good spirits. They are creative with their cocktails and the mixers make a great take-home experience. We did a group tour with flights and cocktails and snacks and everyone had a blast. We had a group of 9 people and had great service. Thank you ABBY! You're the best guide. Very knowledgeable and attentive. Had a great time visiting the distillery. We did some tasting (great flight with both liquor and cocktail samples), had some cocktails and split a sandwich. We didn't take the tour but will try to time it right next time we visit. I'm not normally a gin person, but their Freeland Gin was delicious and not overly "medicinal" tasting. If you visit try the Dandelion Daze cocktail, it was so good we now make them at home. Quality products, we took home a bottle Gin and Bourbon (great unique bottle shapes as well). read more

Hitting happy hour at Trifecta as we often do after a long slog down from Seattle and ordering my well deserved martini I was asked for my gin preference. I paused and the lovely woman who is often tending bar said "try this" gin so I did. Gin from the women who own Freeland Spirits. Yup- it's a winner and as some of you know, I am-ahem,picky about gin. And the bottle is lovely- so a double win So a women-owned business doing business with suppliers who are also women owned businesses. And here we are, we have women taking their place in Washington making law and women in Portland taking their place making great gin and a number of other things. Giving a 1 one star... not for their product but because of the option they use to deliver out of state orders. I have purchased a couple times now as gifts. The 1st one was delivered at 9:30 p.m. crazy. The 2nd one was delivered without signature to the wrong address. It was found in the wrong addresses teenagers room, luckily unopened. The parents delivered to the right address after a couple days. I knew it wasn't delivered to the right address..... I made several attempts to contact the delivery company and they would not confirm who signed (now I know because it wasn't signed for). Called Freeland and never got a call back. I came as part of a group for a networking event, and I cant say enough great things about our experience at Freeland. The tour guide was super friendly and knowledgeable, the snacks were delicious, and the spirits were really well done. Their drink menu is diverse, so there's something for everyone. Came for the whiskey but stayed for the gin! We did a tour of the distillery and had a great time talking with the staff. After they were nice enough to go through all our questions they left us with some yummy drinks while we sat in a cozy corner and enjoyed some time to ourselves. Easily one of the classiest yet comfortable new cocktail spots in Portland. Whether you're escaping the rain or wanting to sit outside on a sunny day, Freeland has you covered. The cocktails are all incredible but not overly mixed, you never feel like the spirit itself is being lost to sweet add ins. Their gin is the only one I've ever been happy to enjoy straight up with an ice cube. It's so nuanced and layered, I'd recommend that first before a cocktail. Great cocktails and wonderful gin. Bar staff was friendly enough, but not super proactive about talking about the product so we just chose something we thought we'd like off the menu ourselves. Would have loved to learn more about their favorites and recommendations etc. but even with that it was totally worth the visit. It's a cute spot, great interiors and good for a snack and a tasting. Plus who doesn't want to support a woman owned business. I'd totally recommend buying a bottle of gin to take home, it's smooth and floral and has been a favorite in my home bar so far! read more

I've loved Freeland since their initial opening though have to warn that their Yelp page needs updating, as far as their hours of operation. Went over at 5:45 p.m. based upon hours saying open till 8:00 p.m., was told that last call was past and turned us away. Was looking forward to a Freeland original cocktail though not to be. Most beautiful tasting room in Portland. Gorgeous plants and wallpaper to go with the pretty round bottles of gin and whiskey. Love this place. The tour is fun with generous tastings. I didn't think I liked Bourbon outside of a hot toddy till I discovered Freeland Spirits. So smooth. My favorite cocktail is the Love Below, followed closely by the gin and rose tonic on a hot day. Nice mix of naughty and healthy food. It's my new go-to for out of guests and girlfriend get-togethers. The famous blue gin bottle makes an excellent hostess gift. read more

They were very welcoming, explained the history of the place, and Lee (the distiller) joined us at the bar and shared details about the operation. As for drinks, we sampled their gin and bourbon. You know it's an unfortunate experience when they don't even care to ask you how it was. Had they asked I would have said... I am almost offended at how bad the pizza was. Wood fired? I think not. I saw smoke coming from a small cart on the side of the building near where we were sitting, but it clearly tasted like frozen pizza imitating a cardboard box. The kiddo ordered mac n cheese and gave it a 1/2 thumbs up- because he will eat anything. We were going to take it home, but the only to-go container available was a pizza box...errr, no thanks. The tour was about 15 minutes as it is a small place. The price of the tour comes with a taste of the gin, someone else's bourbon since theirs is still aging and two cocktails. One cocktail was disgusting, way too much ginger and other was a gin and rose tonic which was pretty good.
