In June 2026, while I was in the process of building a new home, Allstate notified me that it would not renew my homeowners insurance policy, despite my having paid all premiums in full. The reason provided was that the construction process was taking longer than expected. I contacted my agent, Jim DeBruler, who said he would investigate the matter. After waiting approximately four weeks, I received an email from another staff member in the office. The email contained no subject line and included only a PDF copy of a fax with a handwritten note indicating that the only alternative coverage available was through an outside insurer at nearly seven times the annual premium I had previously paid through Allstate. During this same period, I received another notice from Allstate stating that my rental property insurance had been canceled due to a missed payment. The missed payment occurred after my bank account was frozen and replaced because of an attempted identity theft. When I contacted the agency, I was informed that I would need to provide documentation from my bank proving the identity theft and pay a $25 returned-payment fee in order to reinstate the policy. I then contacted Allstate's corporate customer service department myself directly. After waiting on hold for more than 35 minutes, I explained that I had been an Allstate customer for nearly 30 years and had never previously missed a payment. I requested that the $25 fee be waived given the circumstances, but I was told that no one had the authority to remove the charge. As a result of these experiences, I decided to move all of my remaining policies to another insurance agency. The new agency took the time to meet with me personally, review my coverage in detail, and answer my questions. In addition, the new policies provided comparable coverage at premiums approximately 15% lower than what I had been paying through Allstate. Based on my experience, I did not feel that this agency provided the level of customer advocacy, communication, or support I expected when facing significant insurance-related issues.
